Nebraska High School Football

I'm gazing a bit north at Nebraska High School football, who finished their championship games in mid-November. First thing I looked at was the composition of the teams playing for the various championships. In Nebraska, there is Class A, B, C1, C2, D1, and D2, from smallest to largest. From what I've seen from photos, the "great black athlete", as Bill McCartney would say, is virtually non-existent in Nebraska high school football.

Here is an interesting list, the top rushers in NE for 2010. Roughly half of the list is comprised of 8-man and 6-man players, but the top guys are in the biggest, most competitive 11-man classes. And they're all white. Of the top 3 rushers, I can't find ANYTHING on any of the "recruiting services" besides Brock Sherman being recruited as an inside LB. Zack Call, who is 6', 195 pound back obliterating records, playing on a semi-final team in Nebraska's largest class is INVISIBLE from a recruiting standpoint. Damn that lack of melanin!




2010 Bobby Mills 1000 Yard Club


*This is the 36th season for the Bobby Mills 1000 Yard Club, a club that honors all the Nebraska high school running backs each year that rush for over 1000 yards in a season. The club was established in 1975. During the 36 year span, 2,763 running backs have reached the 1000 yard plateau.


*This year's list includes 92 backs:67 are seniors, 18 juniors, 6 are sophomores & there is one freshman.
*Forty seven come from the 11-Man ranks, 40 are from 8-man and 5 come from 6-Man.
*Two backs reached the 5000 yard career rushing mark. Zach Call from Mullen ran for 5,272 yards in a career stretching from 2007-2010. Call also is the only back on this year's list to have 3 straight 1000 yard seasons. Ryan Randall of Blair rushed for 5,282 yards in that same span and twice eclipsed the 2000 yard mark. He was last year's state rushing champ with 2,618.


*Ravenna was the only school to have two runners surpass the thousand yard mark.
*Jacob Morrill of Creighton became only the 5th freshman in history to hit the 1000 yard mark.


*Finally, the asterisk following the player's name indicates he is a repeater from last season.

Number 4 in the above list is Trent Mastny from Howells High School, the D2 champion from this year. In the championship game against Sargent High School he rushed for 181 yards on 26 carries, and even had a halfback-pass for a touchdown in the 46-7 dismantling. He's only a junior, so maybe he'll eventually show up as a prospect somewhere. After all, the DWF boards will always parrot the line that "if you've got talent, they (scouts, coaches, etc.) will find you" without including the caveat at the end "---if you are black".

Zach Sterup A huge prospect from Hastings, Nebraska plays basketball as well, but has committed to Nebraska as an OT.

Mike Shoff Probably the best prospect out of Nebraska for 2012. He plays in Cambridge, Nebraska, and has already been offered by Iowa.
