The annual list just came out...not many surprises here...

Most Dangerous Cities: Flint, Michigan Ranks As The Deadliest

Compiled annually by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the list examines violent crime in cities all across America. However, for the “most dangerous” list, only areas with over 100,000 residents were considered. Once all of the data had been properly examined, Flint, Michigan emerged as the city that’s the most hazardous to the health of its residents.

Business Insider, the website responsible for compiling the list, states that over 2,300 violent crimes were reported in 2011. To make matters worse, over 83 forcible rapes were reported to police. Keep in mind that these statistics only take into account those crimes which were filed with local authorities.

Following close behind Flint was Detroit, Michigan, which experienced over 2,100 violent crimes in 2011. In that year alone authorities were forced to contend with 48 murders. Comparatively, the national average for homicides per 100,000 people is 4.7 per year.

Rounding out the top five most dangerous cities in the United States were St. Louis, Missouri (1,857 violent crimes), Oakland, California (1,683 violent crimes), and Memphis, Tennessee (1,584 violent crimes). These three locations also reported a high number of rapes and murders during 2011.

For the record, the FBI defines violent crime as non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and, of course, murder.

Too bad about Kansas City being on this list. It was a wonderful place in the 70's and early 80's (and I'm sure before that, too). Second in the world only to Paris, France in number of fountains. Nice, large old homes with old world charm and the subtle smell of KC BBQ wafting through the air. But I guess there'd be no Overland Park, KS if weren't for all of the crime in KC proper.

Springfield, IL seems like an oddity, too, considering it's geographic location. But then again, the whole state of Illinois, except for maybe a few small pockets, is pretty much a hell-hole now anyway.

D.C. used to be higher on this list, often at the top. I'm guessing gentrification has probably helped them out quite a bit there.

Stockton, CA on here too, now. That place hasn't been the same since the Barkley's lived there oh so long ago.

Surprised to not see Camden, NJ, or "Chocolate City" (New Orleans, LA) on it, which shows you how bad these other cities must be now.

Also, note that all of these cities, except for Stockton and Oakland, are east of the Missouri river.


EDIT: I noticed Chicago is not on this list. I find that very hard to believe. I'm sure Rahm had something to do with that.

Good catch. I'm sure you're right about that. I thought Camden had a few hundred thousand people in it. What a hell-hole.

Nope. I have never seen anything even remotely close to as bad as Camden. I believe it's the poorest city in America as well. Lately I've been reading a lot of news stories of negro and Hispanics smoking PCP and commiting murders.

Camden's violent crime rate is 2,773 per 100,000 people. It's murder rate is 60 per 100,000 people.

East St. Louis is the most dangerous city in the U.S., and it's not even close.

Those are only the 2007 stats. It has gotten worse since Obama took over.

Funny. I thought of East St. Louis too. I drove around there once and it freaked me out, and I'm from Detroit. Newark and Camden are bad, as is Flint and Detroit of course, but East St. Louis may be the worst. Springfield and Rockford?? I thought those were small cities.

The crime rate has actually gone down recently, which isn't saying much...

I'd imagine the crime rate is actually much higher than both of ours stats show, blacks don't like talking to the cops and a city that's >95% black is going to have a lot of unreported crime.

Camden has lost it's police force due to budget constraints and is going to be patrolled by a metro police office. It's the most dangerous city in America. Trust me.
