Miscellaneous Boxing News

A former world No 2 heavyweight boxer once primed to fight Tyson Fury has died aged just 40, after 11 years of care following an 'attack' in which the perpetrators were never found.

Russian Denis Boytsov pulled out of a fight with Fury in December 2012 and was considered the world's second-best heavyweight behind Wladimir Klitschko. He had a 36-1 record when his career was cut short in 2015.

Boytsov suffered serious head injuries in a Berlin subway tunnel and had to be placed into a medically induced coma because of swelling on the brain.

A statement on the boxer's website suggested he was the victim of an attack linked to his boxing career. 'It is possible that this attack was linked to the boxer's sporting activity,' the statement said. 'Around two years ago, Boytsov was receiving threats constantly.'

I was going to mention his passing on a follow up to the Saturday bouts as his death was announced on Saturday in a release by his family.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had issues with Russian organized crime groups as other Russian/Soviet boxers have been killed or intimidated by gangsters.

I do recall around the time of his loss to Polynesian long shot Alex Leapai in a world title eliminator that he was battling alcoholism which probably contributed to his shocking loss to Leapai who was more of a long shot than even dumpier Andy Ruiz was against Joshua.

From what I remember of the accident German police found no evidence of foul play and nobody witnessed anybody else around Boytsov.

Anyway sad news about this former contender.

Yes another double header weekend with two compelling main events. Puello has some quality wins on his resume so this shouldn't be a walk over for Smith. The sports books have Smith as a slight 8 to 5 betting favorite. Interestingly he blew out Matias who beat Puello for the title that Puello is fighting for in this bout.

In the evening wild swinging and entertaining Emanuel Navarrete has a bout with O'Shaquie Foster who is a smooth boxer type. The key to this bout is if Foster has the boxing ability to avoid the looping punches of the Mexican national. In every division below 135 pounds nobody has been able to avoid these combinations but Navarrete has been thwarted at 135 pounds due to his punches not having the snap they did at lower weight divisions.

Out of the ring MVP promotions who represent Lucas Bahdi is filing a protest for a rematch due to what I brought up a few weeks about the referee missing knock downs and scoring non knock downs as knock downs. Because it's Jake Paul behind this protest this protest could have legs behind it...https://www.boxingscene.com/article...-lucas-bahdi-rematch-after-officiating-errors
