Miscellaneous Boxing News

Duane Bobick, the Great White Hope of the 70s. One of the few people to beat Teo'filo Stevenson. He had a good career going until he met Ken Norton. I certainly pulled for him in every fight. He had a major weakness of not being able to block the over hand right. It finally led to the end of his career.

the boxing schedule starts tonight. Usyk vs Fury is only 9 days away. Fury looks in terrible shape, but I can't count him out of it. One punch can change everything. There are a lot of good fights this weekend.

He had a disappointing career when he turned pro he was viewed as a better prospect than Holmes who he easily beat to make the Olympic team.

It seemed like he had a glass jaw when he fought the elite of the division, though you could say a throat punch from Norton caused him to crumble more than any shot to the temple in his first round knockout loss to Norton. After that loss he lost to Tate in a similar manner and then he retired after another loss.

He led a rather quiet life less the industrial accident(surprisingly I read he became an alderman in his suburb in Minnesota).

This weekend is busy before the big rematch but as far as I know doesn't have a White headliner but should have a few prospects buried on the undercards of the various shows.

As for Fury he hasn't looked good physically since he failed a PED test or even semi fit since Wilder I as he has packed fat and some muscle to fight a rugged style to beat Wilder but he still kept this physique to beat less dangerous opponents like Whyte and Chisora.

I think he is similar to Ali and is past his peak due to less than spartan living out of fight camps and is an old 36.

I started deep diving some undercard bouts and Gurgen Hovhannisyan is fighting this weekend against a non descript opponent and is still as large as ever. Also Gary Culley is fighting Maxie Hughes in a cross roads bout on the undercard of a Matchroom show.

In the main event Uzbek(Eurasian) Murodjon Akhmadaliev is on the comeback trail and is in a WBA interim title fight against Ricardo Franco. The Uzbek is an all action fighter who was a unified champion in the 122 pound division at one time.

Updating the weekend action and reading the wire reports Gurgen Hovhannisyan seemed to meet stout resistance from his opponent who was 309 pounds as the fight went the distance with the "cannon fodder" opponent at times giving as good as he got and winning rounds. This is not a good sign for the future of the prospect. He needs more gym work on defensive techniques if he is to advance beyond this level opponent and be assured of victory.

On the Saturday afternoon card in Monaco presented by Matchroom Gary Culley was thoroughly out boxed and repeatedly rocked by Maxie Hughes as the veteran was able to walk into the wheel house of the taller Irish prospect. Culley needs to work on jab and establishing distance or he will never get beyond this level of opponent as a tall and skinny opponent needs to be able extend his arms to be effective and he never did this beyond flashes in this bout. As for Hughes he will have another shot at an elusive legitimate world title through either an eliminator or a possible world title shot if things break right for him.

In the main event Murodjon Akhmadaliev destroyed his game Mexican opponent with too much power and accurate combos and won the WBA interim 122 pound title and will position himself towards a possible title shot with Monster Inoue. This fight could be a fight of the year candidate if the Uzbek can take the power of the pound for pound Japanese star.

In possibly the biggest news of the day unheralded French opponent Bruno Surace violently knocked out Jaime Munguia. It seemed like it was one way traffic for the Mexican star until the fateful one punch walk off knockout. Surace has the record of a non puncher but he was able to take out the possibly ruined Munguia similar to any huge punching contender. Surace will jump the rankings and could get a substantial raise for a rematch or even position himself for an eliminator with another contender.

There was at least a few other fights with White fighters on the weekend but the cards were numerous and too hard to keep track of all the action.

Here are some highlights of the Munguia upset. As White is right to say, it was mostly a one-way fight until Surace timed that right hand perfectly.

In front of Munguia's hometown fans no less. That's what is so unique about boxing, the one punch instant turn around. The fans just standing there in disbelief. Priceless.

I agree, Hock. The fans looked like they were trying to pick him up from their seats. Munguia lost some big fights by losing.

Fury vs Osyk 2 is this weekend. This is a loaded card with plenty of white fighters. Ukrainian HW Andrii Novytskyi is a top prospect to watch, as is HW Moses Itauma the top prospect. His mother is Slovenian and his father is Nigerian.

What time does the Usyk vs Fury 2: Reignited fightcard start

The full fight card and live DAZN broadcast will begin at 4pm GMT; 11AM ET; 8am CT; 7pm KSA.

There are seven fights on the night, and the first bout is a heavyweight contest between Andrii Novytskyi and Edgar Ramirez.

  • Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury; For Usyk's WBA, WBC and WBO heavyweight titles
  • Serhii Bohachuk vs. Ishmael Davis; Light middleweight
  • Moses Itauma vs. Demsey McKean; Heavyweight
  • Johnny Fisher vs. Dave Allen; Heavyweight
  • Isaac Lowe vs. Lee McGregor; Featherweight
  • Daniel Lapin vs Dylan Colin; Light-heavyweight
  • Andrii Novytskyi vs Edgar Ramirez; Heavyweight

Itauma experienced racism in Slovakia because his mum was a hoe. Lol good thing they moved to the brown nation of England.

Itauma was born in Slovakia in the town of Kežmarok to a Nigerian father and Slovakian mother.[2] He and his family experienced racism in Slovakia stating “Me and my brothers got racially abused. It wasn’t a good place to be."[2] Finally, the family decided to move to England, firstly leave the racist environment they were in and secondly search for new opportunities which Slovakia did not provide.[2] He was the last person in the family to move to England which was in 2008 and eventually he settled in Kent.

Fairly confident Usyk wipes the floor with out of shape Fury. Don’t see him having much left in the tank.

Yes a slow week the Monster was supposed to have a fight on Boxing Day but it was postponed a month due to a cut. He's a real hidden gem.

We also had the Saudi crown prince release video of the rematch and the undercard this week which is probably the biggest news of the week and beats a gift certificate to Walmart....

PS I re-watched the rematch and it seemed even more emphatic than watching it live as Fury was worked in all of the late rounds and maybe was even up only around the 4th round and then lost nearly every round after that. This wasn't even Usyk's greatest heavyweight title fight as he worked over Joshua worse in their first fight

Yes it's another slow week with the Aussie card starting in the middle of the night EST. As far as I know only White prospects fight on the two cards.

Cruiserweight challenge Nyika while looking White is mixed race as he has an African grandfather, he is also a decided long shot as he has never fought a true contender and is now fighting the consensus number 1 cruiserweight.

Opataia easily took care of Nyika in the 4th round and Huni had an easier time with Potgieyer stopping him in the 2nd round,

Yes it's a slow week and probably the biggest news of the week is Fury's "retirement". I heard a pundit mention this is his 4th or 5th, this statement is viewed in a similar light to the various Ali retirements. One difference is Ali was perpetually broke late in his career so he needed to suck every last drop out of his career, Fury seems to need the attention but there have no been rumors of financial insolvency or dark financial clouds on the horizon. https://fightnews.com/tyson-fury-retires/168179

PS the Crown prince has plans and they are crazy....

Yes the boxing schedule is heating up, note the Monster fight is with a South Korean national because Sam Goodman had to withdraw due to injury. Also This weekend is light on White fighters less the A side on a prospect card from England.

Updating the card from this morning and Inoue blew out his Korean opponent in the 4th round. I missed this one due to it being on the middle of the night EST but from I read it was one way traffic until the fateful final blow. There is talk of big bouts in the US and Saudi Arabia for the boxing superstar against various star 126 pound fighters.

The Monster Inoue is just a mini Mike Tyson. Liston to the sounds of his punches.

I saw this live and Smith is at least the fringe world level and took out the French Berber opponent in a spectacular fashion but for the life of me I have never heard of the B side opponent and the punch resistance of his opponent didn't look world class but maybe I am wrong and Smith has rocks in gloves so to speak, we will need to see what Smith does against a proven commodity.

https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_...imantas-stanionis-bout-april-12-atlantic-cityAside from live action this is probably the biggest news of the week...

Before his last bout Ennis would have been the betting favorite but he looked flat and vulnerable and Stanionis is a live dog if not a favorite in this bout. We shall see if the fight is tight will the local fighter get a hometown decision.

The boxing schedule for this weekend starts on Friday. The major fights are on Saturday, not many White fighters, but they have a good fight card. Benavidez vs Morrell should be good, and Figueroa vs Fulton will also be good. Azim vs Lipinets looks good on paper, but Lipinets is getting on in age and has been in some wars.

George Liddard vs. Derrick Osaze (DAZN)

Junior Middleweight | TBA rounds | London, UK

  • Junaid Bostan vs. Bilal Fawaz | TBA weight | TBA rounds

  • Brandon Figueroa vs. Stephen Fulton II | Figueroa’s WBC Featherweight title | 12 rounds
  • Isaac Cruz vs. Angel Fierro | Junior Welterweight | 10 rounds
  • Jesus Alejandro Ramos Jr vs. Jeison Rosario | Junior Middleweight | 10 rounds
  • Yoenli Hernandez vs. Angel Ruiz Astorga | Middleweight | 10 rounds
