This week's boxing starts today. There could be some outstanding fights, looking at them on paper. At least I hope so. The Jones vs Gallagher is off due to Jones being overweight. The Josh Taylor vs Essuman welterweight fight should be a good one, and Moses Itauma vs ex-NFL player Mike Bologun at heavyweight should highlight Itauma's tremendous ability for a 20-year-old.

This could be the last stand for Taylor as headline A side fighter if he doesn't win this bout and maybe if he doesn't win in style as he has looked past it in his last few fights. He has an opponent who is made to order for a prime Taylor but that fighter might be just a memory.
Yes Itauma is being moved similar to Tyson or Morrison very swiftly for a young prospect. You could argue McKean was a tougher opponent than Balogun but Balogun did essentially end the career of Trey Lippe-Morrison so he is a live dog to a point. I saw that one of the sons of Warren talked to the press of putting Itauma in the ring with Bakole which on the surface seems crazy but he is probably starching guys in sparring so the Warren brain trust must feel the time is now.
Back in the time of Tyson and Morrison part of the reason why both were moved quickly is both had self destruct buttons due to personal life issues with women and bar fighting outside the ring. I haven't heard any issues with Itauma on that front.
Also Andrii Novytskyi is having a non televised bout against somebody named David Zeggera. I don't get this one as he is 29 and had a showcase bout on a Saudi card and looked decent why waste your time with this obscure Afro-Peruvian opponent who is as old as dirt and is a blown up light heavyweight.
There is a pattern with many Eastern European heavyweight prospects that seem to sign with non relevant promoters and seem to rot on the vine waiting for opportunities.
Updating the Saturday afternoon card as I speculated Taylor's prime is just a memory as he lost a fairly close decision but non controversial one as I didn't see him winning the fight and maybe you could have scored a draw for Taylor but that was the kindest score he deserved IMO.
In the first 6 rounds of the fight Taylor looked like a reasonable copy of his prime but he seemed troubled by the power of his opponent. Once the 7th round started the Scot seemed to fade and his Afro-Brit opponent started to win rounds by out working the tiring Taylor. If you gave the 12th round to Taylor he might have earned a draw but aside from the last round it was obvious his opponent swept the last 6 rounds due to superior strength at 147 pounds and a better engine.
Hopefully Taylor sees the writing on the wall and retires but this is boxing and if Taylor doesn't feel he has enough pound sterlings in his bank ledger or refuses to see the obvious he could fight on as a B side attraction for prospects.
As for Itauma he was too much for Balogun and blew him out in 2 rounds. He dropped the veteran every time he landed clean on Balogun's chin. Warren and sons have a bit of a dilemma on their hands as a step up from this level of opponent would be a truly live opponent who could beat the still green prospect.
The Warren clan could choose a Charles Martin type who would be a step up but very beatable for a prospect with his potential.
PS I missed this obituary as the original "Italian Stallion" passed away at a very old age of 87 years and Nino Benvenuti is probably the GOAT Italian national boxer as he beat a fellow legend in Emile Griffith in 2 of 3 middleweight title bouts. He also beat Luis Rodriguez and the only elite boxer he couldn't handle was Carlos Monzon who was the GOAT middleweight until Marvin Hagler or you could argue GGG.
Buon riposo meritato Nino.
