Earlier on the Mike Trout thread I did a comparison of Mike Trout and Ken Griffey Jr. stat wise at the end of their first three seasons. I projected Trout's numbers because he hadn't quite finished a complete third season, but now Trout has come up on his 1600th career at bat, actually he's at 1598 and should get 1600 today. Griffey finished at exactly 1600 at bats at the end of his third season and is widely regarded as one of the top 5, 5 tool players of all time. He was highly praised as soon as he entered the major leagues.

Here are their stats after 1600 at bats. I will adjust Trout's after he gets 1600. I've adjusted Trout's stats after he went 4 for 5 and got his 1600th at bat.

BA: Trout: .313, Griffey: .299
H: Trout: 502, Griffey: 478
R: Trout: 321, Griffey: 228
2B: Trout: 96, Griffey: 93
3B: Trout: 22, Griffey: 8
HR: Trout: 83, Griffey: 60
RBI Trout: 264, Griffey: 241
SB: Trout: 96, Griffey: 50
SB% Trout: 89%, Griffey: 68%
OBP% Trout: .403, Griffey: .367
SLG% Trout: .556, Griffey: .479
OPS% Trout: .959, Griffey: .846
TB: Trout: 891, Griffey: 767

Unluckily for Trout, he's been in a mild slump over the last 6 or 7 games or his numbers would have been even better! However, he's still clearly the SUPERIOR talent to this point. Leading the great KG Jr. in every category!

He's in the Mantle/Mays category at this point, but as I've repeatedly said, he's going to have cut back on his SO's (397), if he's to be the greatest 5 tool player of all time!

I look forward to observing the rest of his career!

Maybe Trout has snapped out of his mild slump. He's 3 for 3 tonight with a HR and 4 RBI. I'll adjust his stats to Griffey's tomorrow.

I adjusted Trout's stats after last night when he got his 1600th at bat.

Trout went 4 for 5 with a HR, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI. His numbers are even more superior to KG Jr. to this point!

I love the comparison CS. Trout surely is the superior player at the early stage and I don't know who would argue otherwise. I know strikeouts can be frustrating but with Trout I wouldn't worry. His OBP is so high, I'd argue it doesn't matter. Griffey struck out less but still got on base at around .030 less rate. It's evident that when Trout makes contact he's coming up with alot of hits. He's also patient enough to draw a walk, leading the AL in that category last season.

Another thing I think he'll trump Griffey in is MVP awards. Trout should have already won one but I think this year he finally gets his. Trout is once again leading the AL in WAR and will have his best power numbers by seasons end. His main competitor Miguel Cabrera is having a down year by his lofty standards. Also, the Angels are actually good this year and should make the playoffs. That factors in immensely when the voters make their choice. Griffey only won one MVP award and he didn't due it until his age 27 year.

This is an excellent thread. Thank you for doing it. Every time I hear Cowherd orgasm over Puig, I want to throw up... I knew Trout was better then Puig, but didn't realize he better then Griffey too.. I wouldn't sweat the strikeouts, not with his numbers.. I would rather see someone strikeout then hit into double plays.......great post thanks

My pleasure guys,

Ironically, Puig just went over career at bat number 800. Here is Trout to Puig at 1600 AB's, assuming Puig maintains his current pace....

BA: Trout: .313, Puig: .313
H: Trout: 502, Puig: 439
R: Trout: 321, Puig: 231
2B: Trout: 96, Puig: 90
3B: Trout: 22, Puig: 14
HR: Trout: 83, Puig: 61
RBI: Trout: 264, Puig: 180
SB: Trout: 96, Puig: 36
SB% Trout: 89%, Puig: 55%
OB% Trout: .403, Puig: .391
SLG% Trout: .556, Puig: .527
OPS% Trout: .959, Puig: .918
TB: Trout: 891, Puig: 739

A tie at BA., but Trout dominates Puig at every other stat! Cowherd can chew on that for a while.

I'm not telling anyone here anything, but what we're seeing is truly a rare talent in Mike Trout. I hope he continues and becomes the greatest modern day BB player of all time.

BTW, he just hit HR number 22 tonight!

Trout is 16th in the majors in strikeouts, but he's also 9th in walks.

I had no idea Puig's SB success rate was that bad. Anything below 70% is actually hurting your team.

Has it really been a whole year since we started this thread of comparing Mike Trout to Ken Griffey Jr., one of the greatest 5 tool players of all time? Well another year has come and gone, so I thought I would update stats on MT and KGJ. I used the number of at bats during their careers as a comparison. Trout is at career AB 2163 as of last night. KGJ is at Career AB 2165 at the end of his 4th season.

BA. Trout .305 Griffey .301
Runs Trout 430 Griffey 311
Hits Trout 660 Griffey 652
2B Trout 129 Griffey 132
3B Trout 27 Griffey 12
HR Trout 119 Griffey 87
RBI Trout 351 Griffey 344
SB Trout 111 Griffey 60
SB% Trout 86% Griffey 67%
OB% Trout .395 Griffey .364
SLG% Trout .555 Griffey .494
OBP% Trout ..950 Griffey .858
TB Trout 1200 Griffey 1069

As you can see, Griffey has closed the gap a little in some categories and has passed Trout in doubles. However, Trout is still showing he's the superior player at bat and in the field. Trout is also just midway through his 4th season.

Griffey has a pretty good season in his 5th year with 45 HR's and 109 RBI and leads the league in his first category, TB with 359. Then has some bad luck with the strike shortened season in 1994 and he sustains an injury in 1995, before going on a tear for the next 4 seasons from "96 to "99, in what is to be tainted by suspicion of steroids and the "live" ball era! So things could get more interesting over the next 6-7 years into Trout's career.

At this point in their careers, Trout has already led the AL in 4 categories on 6 different occasions. Trout is currently leading the AL in SLG% and is in the top five in numerous other stats, including 2nd in HR's and 2nd in TB's.

Although he's cut down somewhat this season striking out he still leads KGJ in the one area I wish he didn't. Trout has struck out 568 times to Griffey's 313, but walks more than Griffey, 309 to 222.

Trout has already been named the AL MVP, while KGJ hasn't yet won the award at this point in his career!

I have really enjoyed following Trout's career so far and hope to see more in the years to come.

Excellent comparison for all of the dumb fans that cannot believe they are close in any category. Thanks for your hard work. It's really interesting to read. Trout and Harper are the best in baseball by far i.m.o.

Thanks WL. At this point in their careers, Griffey is not really in Trout's league. Now, with that said in Griffey's 8th through his 12th season, he goes on quite a tear, however, that's in the steroid/live ball tainted era. We'll have to see if Trout can maintain his lead over Griffey stat wise in about 8 years from now. So far, Trout is putting up Mantle/Mays type numbers, which are once in a generation type players. I believe that's what we're seeing in Trout. A lot of players don't start really putting up career numbers until well into their late 20's and early 30's. Trout is doing all this at age 23. We'll see what he does as he continues to get better with maturity.

Harper, has the potential to be a Babe Ruth type player, hitting wise, but continues to have nagging injuries. He's had a great year so far, but has missed 10-12 games to injury again this year.

Harper is coming up on 1600 AB's. Maybe I'll do a Harper/Griffey comparison.

Again, unbelievable how quickly time passes! It's been two years since I've updated this thread. So here's Trout and Griffey after around 3400 AB's comparison. Their careers have taken an eerily similar path as Griffey and Trout were injured during their year 25 seasons. The following are their stats after their age 25 seasons.

AB. Trout 3399- Griffey 3420
R. Trout 692- Griffey 570
H. Trout 1040- Griffey 1039
2B.Trout 200- Griffey 201
3B.Trout 40- Griffey 19
HR. Trout 201- Griffey 189
RBI. Trout 569- Griffey 585
SB. Trout 165- Griffey 92
SB% Trout 81%- Griffey 53%
BB Trout 571- Griffey 426
SO Trout 874- Griffey 510
BA. Trout .306- Griffey .302
OBP. Trout .410- Griffey .379
SLG. Trout .566- Griffey .536
OPS. Trout .976- Griffey .915
TB. Trout 1923- Griffey 1845

Mike Trout still showing why he's the better all around and complete player! I believe he would have really separated himself from Griffey had he not been injured, but to be fair Griffey suffered injuries also. Now over the next 5 years Griffey will average almost 50 HR's a season giving way to the steroid and live ball suspicion. It's interesting, though never confirmed, how Griffey like Bonds became so powerful, suddenly. Trout will no doubt have to pick it up in the HR/RBI category to keep pace, but no matter. He's still the most complete player since Mantle /Mays. I would even compare him, a little to Cobb as the GOAT, to this point in their careers, as indicated by the WAR stat. Cobb is now in first with Trout in second after their year 25 season. Trout would have been number one if not for the injury.
