Mike Furrey- 1000 yards?

My jaw dropped when I read that Furrey had 98 catches.
That is freakin' awesome. How many more wr's could do the same if given the opp.

Here's a scenario my brother pointed out. The AZ Cardinals are now exempt from having to hire a black coach given their term with Green. ANd they also have absolutely NO expectations for them in the future. So, now is the time for them to hire some rebel who sees value in players that the other coaches don't. The new coach, the rebel, won't get ridiculed because noone expects anything anyway, and they've tried the other ways before.

Perfect storm for the Cardinals to go with a Non castetype and tear up the league. Take Mike Haas right away. He'd be the next Furrey.

Doubt this will happen of course.
 
You can get over Hass, he is not going to see another play from scrimmage in regulae season football again.
 
Congrats to Mike Furrey, although he is getting no media respect. I heard on the radio last night "he went over and spiked the ball against one of the Dallas stars and broke it, and he was a safety last year." They made the Dallas defense sound bad because a guy like Furrey had beaten them so bad.

On the college front, FB Owen Schmitt of West Virginia was belittled today in one of the most blatant anti-white displays I have seen by an announcer, Gary Danielson.Edited by: Colonel_Reb
 
How was Schmitt belitted, Reb? You can't say something like that and leave us all wondering what it was!

I asked a friend of mine who lives in Detroit of Furrey's chances of starting next season: he said they'd be the same as Mike William's chances of sitting on the bench another year. Also, they think Millen will take another USC WR.
 
Sorry for leaving you hanging. He said in the 4th quarter that he was "rumbling" when he scored on a 52 yard run in the first quarter. How can a guy "rumble" for 52 yards without getting caught. He described him several times as "lumbering", when he popped off 15 and 20 yard runs! Incredible! Vern Lundquist just sat there and never mentioned his skills, except that he got fewer carries this year than last because Slaton and White were running so well. All this after he had gone 101 yards on 9 carries at that point in the game!

He scored 2 TDs, but who did they say could carry the team without Slaton, why their great black QB, White! Unreal. They would just sit there silently while he racked up more yardage in the 4th, without saying anything. Gary said he was a walk on and a great story, but never said anything about him playing in the NFL or how productive he is when he runs the ball. Danielson had me and my Dad upset. I was watching when Schmitt ran 52 yards on the first play of the game. The announcers were kind of amused by it. Danielson said how it was his longest run of the season by far. A good announcer would have said how the run wasn't surprisinggiven that Schmitt averaged 7.9 yards per rush in 2005. Or that he was averaging nearly 5 yards per rush in 2006 despite being used a lot as a goal line back this year.


If Schmitt would lose 20 pounds he would easily have the speed to be an NFL tailback, but he'll undoubtedly be asked to add even more weight and be nothing but a Dan Kreider type blocking back.

Come on Colonel, you know us White guys...we're quite the exceptional "rumblers" and "lumberers". Those must be the official caste-whore terms for "fast", when referring to a spectacular play made by a White man. lol.

Announcers and other Caste Whores never cease to amaze me, as they always stoop to a new low. For Gods's sake, just say that the guy is fast. What, do they need special permission from the network to use the words "fast" and "White" in the same sentence? It gets more and more 're-God-damn-diculous' every time I read a sports column or turn on the T.V.

If Furrey doesn't start next year, it would be interesting to find his black counterpart, that is, the highest ranking black receiver who started this year but not next. Chances are all black receivers in the top 15 will be starting I would think.Edited by: referendum
 
98 catches, 1086 yards & 6 TDs thats a great season. I know that they will use his 11.1/ catch against him, but it doesn't make sense. All you have to do in the NFL is move the chains. Furrey also almost never drops passes! Detroit stunk because of the defense and Kitna's turnovers which is due in part to bad pass blocking. Kevin Jones also isn't what he was predicted to be. Furrey and Roy Williams were the brightest spots on the team! Williams gets credit but Furrey gets no glory b/c he lacks melanin! Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins
 
Black receiver Troy Brown was allowed to catch 97 passes and only averaged 9.2 ypc in 2002. That meaningless statistic is always used as an excuse to bench white players.

Chrebet never had higher yards per catch numbers either. The Jets even under Herm, where Chrebet was slowing down were reluctant to phase out Wayne. If Mike retains his speed he will be an integral part of the Lions offense. Proel near the end of his run was much slower than Furrey and the Rams always wanted him.
 
His 98 catches is the most by a non-rookie, following a season of zero catches...or something like that.
It was actually its own small article in the newspaper.
 
Does anybody know the last time a white player had so many receptions in a season? Or did Furrey set the record with his total?

No I recall a white reciever breaking the century mark for receptions. Maybe Drew Bennett?

Ed McCaffrey had 101 catches in 2000. Before that Charlie Hennigan of the Houston Oilers led the AFLwith 101 in 1964. I think those are the only two white receivers to have 100 receptions in a season, though there may have been another receiver that did it in the early days of the AFL. Sports Historian or someone else may know for sure.

Yeah, I could have sworn I heard someting similar somewhere (probably here on CF). But, it had to do with yards, not catches. Someone stated that a couple of years ago, Bennett had something like 1,200 some-odd yards. I beleive it; Bennett is nasty on the field.

Don, ive jotted down what big name recievers (who arent being questioned like Furrey is) Furrey beat this year. He has;

28 receptions and 270 yards more than Keyshawn Johnson.

24 receptions and 130 yards more than Hines Ward.

29 receptions and 140 yards more than Larry Fitzgerald.

None of these guys are being scrutinised like Furrey is. Feel free to use these numbers if you are wasting your time arguing online.

Concerning his low Yardage per catch, well, thats clearly not too big a problem if he makes 100 odd catches. Ie a large number of receptions (like what he had this season) will even out a low YPC average.
 
Check out this guys quote from that blog.

"Furrey is a slot guy to them. The only reason he went to No. 2 was because the other guys were screwing up so bad they didn't have much of a choice. They want to sign him as a slot receiver. He wants to be paid No. 2 money."


1) In this guys mind everyone had to be screwing upso bad in order for a white player to start.

2) How dare Mike Furrey ask to be paid #2 money!
 
Good stats, Chris. Fitzgerald was injured for part of the season, but Ward and Keyshawn are "legends" who would never be scrutinized under any circumstances. Furrey's role this past season was actually a lot like the role Johnson plays -- a reliable possession receiver who goes over the middle and doesn't have a high yards per catch average. But then again, most NFL receivers don't have a high ypr average,even the "deep threat" ones.
