i remember troy edwards. he played for the steelers. it never worked out. let's see if jones can move up to number 2.

That is great news!Jones is already showing some of his critics how good his hands are with those one handed catches.We already know about his speed and size.It will be a deadly combination for defenses trying to stop him.Even if he stays at the #3 receiver,he will not be matched up against the teams best corners which will make it even easier to light it up.Just throw him the ball and good things will happen.Go Jags!

That's not good enough for his freakish talent. If he's notstarting at the number 2 spot by midseason and number 1 by next year I will be disappointed. Considering his competition, Reggie Williams, has only one year of experience on him and has been a complete bust I don't think number three is a very lofty goal at all. He should start at number 2 week 1 - any black reciever like him would. Anybody mention his 47yard one hand grab last game? I won't be aboe to stand to watch another white reciever waste his best years on the bench again.

Different pass plays are written for different receivers. The first read could be for the slot, the next for the wing, etc. It all depends on the play called and the defensive adjustments at the line.

They don't always throw to who is open. Some pass plays are thrown to a designated area or to the location where the receiver should be at a certain moment in the play, i.e. a timing play. Sometimes when the throw is made the receiver is covered; he has to make a break on the ball at the right time to elude the coverage or out jump the DB to get it.

Jone's designation as the third wide receiver means that he will see the field on three receiver sets. Feel free to disagree or comment though; this is my understanding of how it works.

I think in general, the higher the number, the
greater number of plays are designed for you to make. The thing
is, you do not want to throw to a covered man and that happens a
lot. Good quarterbacks watch all receivers and do not decide who
to throw to before the play. I think this numbering system just
pads some guys stats.

The best offenses usually throw a lot of short passes where any receiver can get open.

NFL teams number their recievers by putting out a depth chart. The number one reciever always gets more balls thrown his way even on teams where the quarterback is very good. More plays are designed to go to the number one reciever. As the primary reciever, if the number one reciever is open he will likely get the ball. If both the number one and number two reciever are open the number one reciever is still more likely to get the ball as he is usually the first reciever in progression. The best quarterbacks do spread the ball out more evenly but even they will throw to the number one more often than other recievers. What a player is listed at on the team depth chart indicates how much the team intends to use his talents.Edited by: Kaptain Poop

Is it just me or do the Jags receivers seem to be dropping a bunch of balls tonight? (Oct 9, Sunday night game)

I'm not sure they've thrown to Matt Jones once, and he has been open several times. Unless there is some other tall white wide receiver on the Jags?

The announcers were commenting about some Jags WR who is big, 6'2", 200 lbs, who could outmuscle even the bigger Bengals corners. But all I can think of when I hear that is Matt Jones, at what, 6'4"? is too big to be an effective wide receiver.

WS, Matt Jones is 6'6" just for the record. This team would rather lose than use this weapon. It's disgusting that Bennett and Jones have to rely on black QBs to get them the ball. Jones especially because even if Buy Rum gets injured his two backups are also black and suck just like him.

A quick review of QB stats for the 2005 season shows Leftwich is right in the middle of the pack as far as performance goes. He is doing as well as Jake Delhomme and Mark Brunell, but better than Trent Green, and far behind the Drews (Brees and Blesoe.)

If there is a problem with Leftwich, its what has been pointed out already, that he holds the ball to low, and doesn't throw to Matt Jones enough.

He was pretty accurate Sunday night, in my opinion, but his receivers didn't want to hold on to the ball. He hit a couple of them mid-stride right in the hands and they dropped it. Thats more of an indictment of the receiver than Leftwich.

On a side note, does anyone else know that Kerry Collins hasn't thrown an INT this season, four games??

News: The Jacksonville Times-Union reports that Ernest Wilford could see more playing time as the No. 3 WR in place of rookie Matt Jones, according to head coach Jack Del Rio. "There's always a chance that combinations could be worked out different ways,'' Del Rio said. "Ernest has been very solid from the day he arrived here.''

Analysis: Wilford has four touchdown catches in his two-year career, including Sunday's catch against Cincinnati. The Jaguars are 4-0 in those games. Jones dropped two passes in Week 5. Consider picking up Wilford as a No. 4 or 5 WR in larger leagues. End

Did anybody see Matt Jones drop two passes? Even if he did now there are going to dump on him? A first round pick - best reciever in the preseason which is the only time he got real playing time. Wow. He needs to ask for a trade NOW. He has no future with this team.

DelRio is incapable of reducing the role of Reggie Williams. Last year's number one draft pick started all of '04 and ended up with 27 catches for just 268 yards, a horrible 9.9 average, and 1 TD. This year he has 18/196, all the way up to a 10.9 average, and 0 TDs.

White first round pick -- no patience or time to develop. Black first round pick -- years and years of starting even when it's apparent he's a bust (see Ferguson, Robert and a slew of others).

I did. The first one was his fault, the second was while he was being "groped" by the defender. The commentator said it was within five yards of the line of scrimmage, but then promptly said that Jones has to learn how to deal with that. But that's clearly how they drew out the play; a short pass to Jones. I don't know what he could've done. They would've gotten very little from the play anyway. Maybe they need a new coach or offensive coordinator that will turn Jones into the "deep threat" that he should be, or become.

Regardless, it's a disappointing situation.

Also, I saw a Bengals receiver with "alligator arms" (I think that's what you guys call it, he could've caught the pass but saw the defender coming, pulled his hands back, and let the ball sail over his head, is that right?) and the commentators totally ignored it. But they get on Jones's case for being manhandled near the line of scrimmage. Pathetic.

Did they say anything about the passes the other wide receivers dropped that night? There were several. The one that hit Quincy Morgan in stride down the left sideline was one - it was a beautiful pass, and Morgan didn't bobble, bump, or nudge the ball. He just plain dropped it.

This is another case of black WR getting plenty of opportunities to run routes, drop passes, ad nauseaum, whereas a guy like Matt Jones drops two and now he is dropping down the depth chart.

Where's GreatLakes at? I'm sure he wants to comment about Jone's dropping passes, too, just like his favorite white receiver Drew Bennett.

I don't know why any of us should be surprised in the least by this.
The reason this site exists is because this kind of stuff is happening,
at some level of football, every day across America. If Matt Jones were
being evaluated on the same basis that all black WRs are evaluated on,
he would have been the first overall pick in the NFL draft. He would
have received reams of publicity as some kind of new "Super Freak"
specimen, with his unheard of size/speed combination. He would have at
least had the 3rd WR position handed to him, without any competition,
and if he showed any potential during camp and preseason (which he
clearly did), then he would have opened the season starting at WR
opposite Jimmy Smith. This situation is so sad. If a college football
player from a major university, who is 6'6 and runs a 4.3 40 can't make
it in the NFL as a starting WR, then it is impossible for any white
player to do so.

I agree, but what do you think would have happened if he had played at WR for four years in college, at the same school, played great, put up great stats, then put up the same great numbers at the Combine, at the same height, etc.? Exactly the same, a little bit better...? I'm not disagreeing with anyone, we all had/ have high hopes for Jones, and we're all frustrated that he's not doing better. Further, we all recognize that he's on the least white team in the league. But we can't forget that he is changing positions. That can't be a painless process. Edited by: JD074

We may remember that he has changed positions, but I don't know if the caste system is going to remember when it comes time to cut him.

It's a big part the team he's on, and part being new to the position. But he won't be given up on, it's way too early in the season. If he were cut in the offseason or in the middle of the '06 season another team would snap him up right away and work with him. That could end up being the best scenario for him. I just don't know if he can thrive with the head coach and quarterback he has now.


Jones reminds me of Drew Bennett in that neither is being sent deep. Bennett was blowing by backfields last year when Volek was in there, but this year. . . I haven't seen it. If a guy shows he can get you 40-yard touchdowns, why would you go away from it? Similarly, Jones should be used much like Randy Moss is. Send him deep a lot, see if they can cover him, and even if they can let him try and come down with the ballwithhis height and great hands.

A friend who watched the Jag's last Sunday night game said he thought Jones looked "slow." I laughed, and told him its because he is bigger and taller than everyone else, his stride is longer. I recounted his 40 times, his vertical, etc but my friend still had the impression that Jones was too slow to play receiver.

Tell your "friend" he needs to get glassing because his sight is too slow to keep up with Jones! Maybe a good "slap up side the head" would do him some good.
