<H1>Sharapova, Hantuchova book quarter-final tennis showdown</H1>
20 hours ago

INDIAN WELLS, California (AFP) â€â€￾ Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova extended her 2008 unbeaten run on Tuesday, booking a quarter-final showdown with defending champion Daniela Hantuchova at the Pacific Life Open.

Sharapova, the fourth seed, escaped with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko, overcoming some erratic play to stretch her match-winning streak to 17.

That run includes her Aussie Open triumph and a victory at Doha.

But she'll likely face her stiffest test of the tournament against fifth seed Hantuchova, who has claimed two of her three career WTA titles at Indian Wells and hasn't dropped a set in three matches this week.

Against Bondarenko, Sharapova was twice up a break in the second set, but both times she was broken back, and she surrendered her serve in the final game as the match went to a third set.

"I did a solid job of winning that first set and had so many opportunities in the second set to finish it off. I was up a couple of breaks and just couldn't," Sharapova said.

In the final set, the Russian said, "It was just a dogfight."

Sharapova eventually finished it off, after 2hr 45min.

"I felt like I was pretty close to being down and out, because I wasn't able to produce good points for a long period of time. I felt like I was starting from scratch all the time," she said.

Although she managed to capture a second-set tiebreaker, Slovakian Hantuchova had her problems before defeating India's Sania Mirza 6-1, 7-6 (7/4).

After the two traded breaks in the second and third games of the second set, Hantuchova - who won her first WTA title here in 2002 - finally earned her first break of the set in the 11th game, taking a 6-5 lead.

She couldn't serve it out, however, immediately dropping her serve to bring on the tiebreaker, which she dominated. Hantuchova raced to a 4-0 lead, then finished it off confidently with a service winner and a forehand winner.

Top-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic, whose runner-up finish to Sharapova at the Australian Open propelled her to number two in the world, rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Italian Francesca Schiavone.

Ivanovic will play Russian Vera Zvonareva, who ended the run of Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-7 (5/7), 6-0, 6-4.

Second-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, lining up a meeting with Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 winner over American Ashley Harkleroad.

Radwanska shocked then world number two Kuznetsova in the third round of the Australian Open.

Third-seeded Serbian booked a meeting with US favorite Lindsay Davenport. Jankovic beat Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-3 to advance, while Davenport downed sixth-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli 6-2, 7-5.

Maria Sharapova has injured her shoulder. She will miss the US Open.

So no Maria and no Justine. That gives the Williams sisters a real shot at repeating their Wimbledon feat of both meeting in the Final.

Wow, surprise move by Sharapova! I have no opinion, as of yet, on the hiring, but I would pay just to see one practice session.

Maria Sharapova hires Jimmy Connors as new coach

Jimmy Connors, Maria Sharapova — Getty ImagesThe disappointing season for Maria Sharapova might soon turnaround thanks to her announcement that a new coach would be taking over.

Sharapova announced on Friday that she would be parting ways with Thomas Hogstedt, her coach of three years, and a day later already had a former Grand Slam champion lined up to help improve her game.

Jimmy Connors, the eight-time Grand Slam champion and former coach of Andy Roddick, is going to take full-time duties with the 26-year-old. The two have worked together for short stints in the past, but never on a full-time basis and Sharapova seems excited about the future.
"I am happy to announce that Jimmy Connors will be my new coach," Sharapova announced on her website. "I have known Jimmy for many years and we briefly worked together in 2008 just before the Australian Open. I am really excited about our new partnership and looking forward to the upcoming tournaments."

This season has been an interesting one for Sharapova. A semifinals loss to Li Na at the Australian Open was tough, but the Russian star did card two victories before heading to France and making it to the finals at the French Open. There Sharapova lost in straight sets to Serena Williams, but was hopeful to make a run at Wimbledon before getting upset in the second
round
by Michelle Larcher de Brito.

Her second round loss at Wimbledon was the earliest Sharapova had been bounced at the grass major since 2009, so a change seemed inevitable, especially when Hogstedt said he wouldn't be traveling as much with Sharapova in the near future.

Connors helped Roddick quickly after taking over as coach for the American in 2006. Roddick made his second U.S. Open final ever that year, but couldn't get past Roger Federer, who beat him in four sets.

Maria's newest coach, Sven Groeneveld, must have helped her to some extent, as she's now up from number 4 in the world to number 2.

This old thread has just a few posts but nearly 2,800 views as I type this. Shows that a lot of people who likely have no interest in the Caste System end up here by going deep into a search about Maria.

The thread about golfing beauty Natalie Gulbis has just 14 posts but over 34,000 views. By contrast, the Tiger Woods thread, which dates back to the first days of this board in September of 2004 and has been semi-regularly updated ever since, has 686 posts and 55,070 views. A sexy White girl trumps out-of-the-box discussions about serious issues every time.

That is interesting, Don, but not all that surprising in the land of the brain dead. I'd noticed that the views were high for it, and was kind of surprised it hasn't been updated, so I checked her rankings and updated the thread.

Well that sucks. Maria Sharapova's big announcement is that she is getting suspended for drugs. Something called meldonium which sounds like a radioactive element but is apparently a drug used for treating various stuff. It had been legal up until Jan.1 when it was added to the list of banned substances and she was caught by her sample from the Australian Open.

It doesn't sound like a big deal, and she's near the end of her career anyway, but this gives the haters lots of fuel to burn her reputation with. Now she's a "cheater" unlike squeaky clean players like Serena Williams.

Here's an article by the Daily Mail, with lots of pics of the leggy blonde. Funniest part of the article is the part about her rivalry with Serena, who it mentions is jealous of the publicity Sharapova gets, and their persuit of the same guy Gregor Dimitrov, for some reason Maria won that battle although for the life of me I can't understand why the guy would chose a hot russian blonde over an african line backer?

I heard that Serena only dates white men, but didn't know she was after Dimitrov. About 15 years ago, I remember watching a few minutes of the MTV show "True Life," and Serena was featured. In the show, her and a shirtless, burly white boyfriend were shown deep sea fishing on a boat. I did a quick search and immediately found it on Youtube. The white boyfriend is first show around the 7:30 mark, then again at the 12:30 mark...

Notice how slender Serena looked back then (she's only slightly more muscular than Venus), without any trace of her bulging, PED-spawned frame. She also acts relatively feminine with the cameras rolling, a stark contrast to her current jaded, miserable persona.

I wonder how her Black Supremacist father thinks about his daughter lusting after white men?

After seeing it start off with "Andy Dick" and go downhill from there in the first minute, I'd rather be tortured by Dick Cheney than watch all 29:23 of Brutus's "diary." o_O

I don't think Brutus exclusively dates white men, but most of her partners have in fact been white men. Her sister seems to be the same way. The father must be losing his mind!

Paul Craig Roberts has almost certainly been mentally ill for more than a decade. He's also a compulsive liar.

As to Sharapova she hasn't adequately explained why she was taking this drug for over ten years as it's usually (perhaps always?) only taken for a few weeks. Since getting a drug proscribed takes years of research and monitoring not to mention the bureaucratic hold-ups it seems the Russians (and does seem to be mostly Russian athletes across numerous sports) discovered a performance enhancement advantage to the drug some time ago and took advantage of it not yet being banned. It's telling to me that the other players on the tour are unimpressed with her explanation. Besides, she was worthless when it came to my primary concern on the women's tour: stopping Serena from breaking the grand slam winners record.

What Maria says on her facebook page:

To My Fans:

I want to reach out to you to share some information, discuss the latest news, and let you know that there have been things that have been reported wrong in the media, and I am determined to fight back.

You have shown me a tremendous outpouring of support, and I’m so grateful for it. But I have also been aware that some – not all, but some – in the media distort, exaggerate and fail to accurately report the facts about what happened.

A report said that I had been warned five times about the upcoming ban on the medicine I was taking. That is not true and it never happened.

That’s a distortion of the actual “communications” which were provided or simply posted onto a webpage.

I make no excuses for not knowing about the ban. I already told you about the December 22, 2015 email I received. Its subject line was “Main Changes to the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme for 2016.” I should have paid more attention to it.
But the other “communications”? They were buried in newsletters, websites, or handouts.

On December 18, I received an email with the subject line “Player News” on it. It contained a newsletter on a website that contained tons of information about travel, upcoming tournaments, rankings, statistics, bulletin board notices, happy birthday wishes, and yes, anti-doping information. On that email, if a player wanted to find the specific facts about medicine added to the anti-doping list, it was necessary to open the “Player News” email, read through about a dozen unrelated links, find the “Player Zone” link, enter a password, enter a username, read a home screen with more than three dozen different links covering multiple topics, find the “2016 Changes to Tennis Anti-Doping Program and Information” link, click on it and then read a page with approximately three dozen more links covering multiple anti-doping matters. Then you had to click the correct link, open it up, scroll down to page two and that’s where you would find a different name for the medication I was taking.

In other words, in order to be aware of this “warning”, you had to open an email with a subject line having nothing to do with anti-doping, click on a webpage, enter a password, enter a username, hunt, click, hunt, click, hunt, click, scroll and read. I guess some in the media can call that a warning. I think most people would call it too hard to find.

There was also a “wallet card” distributed at various tournaments at the beginning of 2016, after the ban went into effect. This document had thousands of words on it, many of them technical, in small print. Should I have studied it? Yes. But if you saw this document (attached), you would know what I mean.

Again, no excuses, but it’s wrong to say I was warned five times.

There was also a headline that said, “4-6 Weeks Normal Treatment for Drug in Maria Sharapova Case.” That headline has been repeated by many reporters who fail to tell their viewers and readers what the rest of the story says. The story quotes the manufacturer of my medicine as saying: “Treatment course can be repeated twice or thrice a year. Only physicians can follow and evaluate patient's health condition and state whether the patient should use meldonium for a longer period of time."

That’s exactly what I did. I didn’t take the medicine every day. I took it the way my doctor recommended I take it and I took it in the low doses recommended.

I’m proud of how I have played the game. I have been honest and upfront. I won’t pretend to be injured so I can hide the truth about my testing.

I look forward to the ITF hearing at which time they will receive my detailed medical records.

I hope I will be allowed to play again. But no matter what, I want you, my fans, to know the truth and have the facts.
- Maria

I find him to be courageous and inspiring, one of the few former members of the establishment willing to speak truth to power. Those he writes about are the compulsive liars.

PC Roberts had claimed for years (and wrote a book) to be against prosecutor misconduct, but when the Duke Lacrosse anti-white witch hunt took place, Roberts wrote not one column attacking Nifong and the MSM-supported hoax. Not one word.

Peter Brimelow finally had to drop him at Vdare after years of complaints because Roberts refused to write about the National Question or how open borders brings in people who support what Roberts is supposedly against.

Roberts' website archives don't list any articles written by him during 2006 and '07, when the Duke lacrosse hoax was in the news, but it's true that he doesn't write much about race and immigration. He does write about the power of the Israel Lobby, which V-Dare studiously avoids (unless that site has changed in the past couple of years as I don't go there often anymore).

All writers have their biases and subjects they emphasize and avoid. Roberts is very popular with readers of the newspaper I edit, The Nationalist Times, which is quite concerned with immigration and race issues. American Free Press also runs his material, as does the left-populist site Counterpunch among others. I appreciate the topics he does cover and don't expect his interests to be the exact same as mine or anyone else's.

Dr. Roberts could have retired quietly but chose to become a very prominent and needed critic of the system he once worked for. If he is doing it for any reasons other than patriotism I don't know what they are.

Roberts' 2006 and 2007 columns are still archived at VDare. I just checked (again) and he wrote nothing about the attempt, backed by the MSM, to send three innocent white men to prison for decades. And Roberts supposedly opposes crooked prosecutors. Was Roberts unaware of the major national news story for a year?

Vdare often mentions and criticizes Jewish support of open borders.

Paul Craig Roberts has done great work in exposing the basic unfairness of the U.S. justice system, maybe more than anyone. What's your point? That Roberts should be shunned because he didn't mention a particular case?

He should be shunned because he's an obvious head case who spews lies. He's especially unreliable when it comes to anything to do with Russia so anything he writes on doping in sports might as well be written by the Russian government.

BTW here are some choice quotes from him on "the basic unfairness of the U.S. justice system" in Ferguson, Missouri:

For those who have long protested racial profiling and police brutality toward racial minorities, the police murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson is just another in a history of racists murders...

Rob Urie is correct that blacks receive disproportionate punishment from the white criminal justice (sic) system...

Myself, former US Representative Dennis Kucinich, and others see Michael Brown’s murder as reflective of the militarization of the police and police training that creates a hostile police attitude toward the public. The police are taught to view the public as threats against whom the use of violence is the safest course for the police officers.

This doesn’t mean that racism is not also involved. Polls show that a majority of white Americans are content with the police justification for the killing. Police apologists are flooding the Internet with arguments against those of the opposite persuasion.

http://www.unz.com/proberts/ferguson-no-justice-in-the-american-police-state/

He then goes on to say that Obama and Eric Holder (who sent a virtual army of civil rights lawyers and FBI agents to Ferguson to find something, anything, to charge Darren Wilson with) have been co-opted by the "white power structure". Yup, it's that evil racist white power structure again.o_O

Exactly. P C Roberts has been railing about the "racist justice system imprisons blacks" meme for years.

Roberts writes little or not at all about sports, and, if he did, he's not going to start talking about the black privilege. However, in the Sharapova article, he did write:

"... As the record proves that Sharapova’s use of the medicine is clearly for medical, not performance, reasons, perhaps she will be reinstated by the International Tennis Federation.http://sputniknews.com/sport/20160310/1036043011/sharapova-unintentional-doping.html
But the Tennis Federation, like most other institutions, might be under Washington’s thumb and used as an instrument of US foreign policy...."

Not certain why he's criticized on this site for supporting her?

The other day you wrote that Paul Craig Roberts has "been mentally ill for over a decade and is a compulsive liar." Now he's merely "an obvious head case who spews lies." Glad to see your prognosis of his mental condition is improving. o_O

Roberts is right about the militarization of police and many other things, including how the neo-cons are trying to intimidate and subvert Russia, but I'm not going to waste time responding to someone who "discusses" at a kindergarten level. Paul Craig Roberts is a national treasure and nothing you or Sport Historian, who considers him a virulent enemy of the White race, write is going to change my opinion so let's leave it at that.

The International Tennis Federation effectively ended Maria's career, suspending her for two years for taking meldonium, which had been banned in January. I don't know anything about meldonium, but Maria was taking it for medical conditions and claims not to know it had been banned.

Regardless of whether she knew it had been banned or not, two years seems very harsh. She's made a fortune on and off the court, but didn't deserve to have her career ended this way. Meanwhile, we're supposed to believe the Hulking Linebacker is completely natural and above suspicion.
