Hmmm, an awful lot of commercials with Duke's Boozer brothers during this week's game intermissions. They are definitely earning more than just what Duke's university-associated NIL collective is paying out.
"From the mouths of babes" is a common turn of phrase. In this case, it was my mother, rather senior, posing this question to me.
"Are those guys related?" Yes, Mom, there are two brothers on Duke, both the same age. They're the sons of a former Duke basketball player.
"Oh, so they are fraternal twins then" (implying that one got the slightly better end of the gene stick and will be drafted #1 by the NBA, since his smaller brother is merely a substitute on this elite team).
As the story goes, Carlos Boozer and his then-wife CeCe gave birth to their first son in 2003. He was diagnosed with sickle-cell anemia, a condition exclusive to blacks. It's a recessive gene combination; some born with it don't last past infancy, others make it to about age 40. You're severely immuno-compromised (really, as opposed to the COVID terms).
So, CeCe went to an IVF lab and fertilized 34 of her remaining eggs with Carlos' sperm.
The lab picked the top two "healthiest" embryos from the petri dish and implanted them in then-Mrs. Boozer (he's on a couple more wives now at this point). The other 32 zygotes, embryos, whatever, were discarded.
I think that's quiet because of the abortion angle, which many hate (it's 32 abortions, keep it simple), but it's really more of a "eugenics" angle, which the other side of the arguing party hates.
Allegedly, the two younger Boozer twins (born 2007) gave rather immediate marrow transplants to their older brother (born 2003). I am not sure of the logistics of extracting bone marrow from TWO DIFFERENT NEWBORN INFANTS to successfully transfuse the SICKLE CELL ANEMIA out of a 4-yr old. This really seems to be the story that the big dogs are running with.
Research what you can yourself, please correct me or add pertinent details.
I incorrectly wrote up my Duke blurb by saying that the Boozer family was linearly breeding the blackness out of their family line.
"The Science" really spikes the line.
