Marc Mariani

One of my favorite players from one of my favorite college teams ended up a 7th round pick for the Titans. I really like Mariani. I think he has all the tools to succeed in the NFL, but will probably be designated to slot duties at first. He's versatile enough to return kicks as well. Here's a great article about Marc.

Talked to my brother over the phone a while back, and he said that Mariani was the fastest guy on the Griz. He's very quick and fast and just zips around defenders as if they had cement loafers on. He's also a top kick and punt returner, and because of this, I think he'll make the team. The Titans coach also got to see him several times because his kid played with Mariani. So, Marc has an inside line to make the team.

Marc is a talented player no doubt, and although I'd like to see him playing on Sundays, I'd hate to see him as the Titans' WSTD. He's currently listed 3rd at the 1WR spot, ahead of Damian Williams from USC. There is another White FCS WR on the Titans roster, Bobby Sewall. I don't know that Bobby will make the team, but in a fair world, he'd definitely get playing time.

I thought his first return was in the pre-season WL. Still, this guy is incredible and with Tennessee's unimpressive receiving corps other than maybe Kenny Britt- whose hands can be questioned- they should get Marc on the field as a receiver.

Yep, the kid's a burner. I saw him play every week with the Griz, and he would just burn by the affletes like their feet were in buckets of cement. The return today doesn't surprise me in the least. I just hope he get's to play some WR.

At UM, he used to zip around (mostly black) DB's and make 'em look like they were wearing cement shoes. He's fast, quick, and agile.

Just goes to show how stupid DWFs are. His statement would apply to anyone that's been in the NFL for 6 years as you probably won't be as fast at age 29 or 30 as you are at 23 or 24.

I will give you an example. Sprinters don't hit their prime until their mid to late 20's. So why would football be any different? The stupid jounalist only says this because of the color of Marcs skin. He is a total idiot. Mariani is a human rocket. He reminds me a little of Tim Dwight but he might end up being even better. They need to put him as a numer 1 or 2 receiver and just let him go.

That's a stupid statement too. Comparing sprinters to football players is like comparing apples and oranges. Sprinters don't have to take the punishment that football players do. I believe the average years spent of a player in the NFL is less than 6 years now.

Although, I do agree with you that the reason the DWF made that statement was that Mariani was White. He wouldn't of said it otherwise.

I think Marc will do well for quite some time if given the opportunity. It was fun watching clips of his returns this year. I hope to see more of him in the seasons to come, but considering the caste NFL, I won't hold my breath.

David Climer is a long-time sportwriter, now columnist, at the Tennessean newpaper. His column praised Mariani. I presume Climer guests on radio shows.

If you want to compare speed loss in football look at tailbacks to wide outs or defensive backs. Many tailbacks lose noticeable speed and agility in their late 20's. Far less receivers and defensive backs lose speed at the same age.

sport, you are correct. I used to periodically listen to (in my team fan days) George Lapidas, an ancient jewish sports talk host in Memphis. He used to have Climer on his show from time to time. I believe I was confusing him with someone else in regard to a big story a few years back.

The Titans plan to try second-year receiver/return specialist Marc Mariani in the slot this season.
Mariani will remain Tennessee's do-it-all return man, but the Titans are trying to find more value for him because of the league's new special teams rules. Mariani, though, didn't catch a pass as a rookie. He'll have to beat out Damian Williams and Lavelle Hawkins for snaps behind Kenny Britt and Nate Washington.
