There's a trust fund being set up to cover his medical costs and to assist his family.

http://www.boxingscene.com/magomed-abdusalamov-trust-created-boxer-family--71360

Boxing has NO health plans or insurance for the athletes, and when something terrible like this happens they have to ask for charity! There must have been a lot of money involved in that big fight. Did he and his family get any of it? How about the trust fund, will the boxing gangsters have their hands in that too?

Mago "remains in a medically induced coma" according to today's update.

Under the Ali act emergency surgery and initial hospital care are covered by insurance. The rehab and follow up visits aren't covered. Also his family could be destitute if he was the sole bread winner. Granted 40K gross goes much farther in rural Russia, but he may never be able to support his family again.

"Despite a handful of successes, the Ali Act has almost universally been considered a failure by those in the business because of a lack of enforcement and other factors..."

The Ali Act was just the usual fancy sounding BS from Washington.

"Each state has different laws/regulations regarding what insurance coverage promoters have to obtain. In NY the laws require the promoters to provide insurance with minimum limits of $7,500 for injuries sustained during participation in a licensed event...."

$7,500 would cover about 30 seconds in that hospital.

Yes the legislation seems to be another paper tiger. I remember this being a big deal because Greg Page was hospitalized after having a fight in Kentucky and the promoters had no insurance. You are right if the promoters only got the legal minimum that expired the minute Mago was admitted for the initial check up.

Boxer Abdusalamov suffers stroke, on life support

Bob Velin, USA TODAY Sports 1:12 a.m. EST November 6, 2013

Russian heavyweight boxer Magomed Abdusalamov, who had brain surgery to remove a blood clot early Sunday after his fight earlier that night, has suffered a stroke and is on life support, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
After he was put in a medically induced coma, Abdusalamov developed a 104-degree fever, which became life-threatening, his promoter, Nathan Lewkowicz, told The Post. He suffered the stroke while being treated for the fever.
"It was a pretty serious stroke, and a machine is keeping him alive," said Lewkowicz, the vice president of Sampson Boxing who said the plan was to keep the boxer in the coma for at least two more days. By then, Lewkowicz told The Post, doctors are hoping the swelling subsides so they can evaluate his condition.
"It's possible he could be in a coma forever. It's possible he could be in a coma for a few more weeks," Lewkowicz said. "No one knows. That's why they have to monitor the situation. You really have no clue. It's basically on the individual."
Abdusalamov, 32, fought and lost a brutal 10-round slugfest Saturday at the Theater at Madison Square Garden against Mike Perez. Both fighters came in undefeated, but both took heavy punishment.
Abdusalamov went to Roosevelt Hospital after the fight to get treated for what he thought was a broken hand, a broken nose and a severely swollen left cheek. An examination found a blood clot in his brain, and he had surgery to remove it.
On Monday night, Lewkowicz told USA TODAY Sports in a text message that Abdusalamov's condition was unchanged. He told ESPN.com that he had not planned to say anything but said someone told The Post, so he confirmed the news. Calls to Lewkowicz late Tuesday were not returned.
Abdusalamov is married with three daughters and lives in Florida. His fight against Perez was on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin-Curtis Stevens middleweight title bout, which was won by Golovkin by eighth-round stoppage.

Here's a picture of Magomed with his wife and 3 daughters.

The latest news on Magomed, as stated above, is that after surgery to remove the blood clot in his brain, he has suffered a stroke, is in a coma, and is on life support.

This is all very shocking and to be honest still feels unbelievable. I've been watching boxing my whole life, and I know that injuries and even deaths can occur, but you don't expect it to happen to someone you watch and familiarize yourself with. It's very sad, shocking, and surreal. Mago is such a tough guy so he is the last guy you'd think this would happen to.

Sergio Martinez has stepped forward and pledged to help out Mago's family, what a top-notch guy Sergio is. Absolute class.

I feel very sad about all of this and I will absolutely be donating an amount to his fund. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't.

I think they may know each other from training out of the Garcia gym in Oxnard. The Garcia clan has brought in wide array of foreign fighters as Mark Demori trained in that gym for a short stretch too. Ps Mago's blood is thick as the two girls look like a mirror image of him. Hopefully he pulls through and is a functioning adult who can learn a trade or even be an instructor in boxing.

In case you haven't seen this already:

[h=1]Adamek comments on Abdusalamov tragedy: “Being a fighter you have to block the realityâ€[/h]
By Przemek Garczarczyk
Photo: Team Adamek

“When next time fans will ask me why I thank God every time I finish the fight and cross myself every time I step into the ring, I will remind them about Magomed fighting for his life†said heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (49-2, 29 KOs), who in 10 days on November 16 will fight on NBC against undefeated Olympic bronze medalist from Ukraine Vyacheslav Glazkov (15-0, 11 KOs). “This is why, no matter what nationality we are, no matter what is being said before the fight, we are boxing brothers.â€
Adamek, whose reputation is largely built on the extremely savage ring wars he had earlier in his career, offers a fighter’s perspective to the Magomed Abdusalamov tragedy. “What happened in New York is the reason why I treat every opponent with the greatest respect, wishing him the best,†the former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion told Fightnews.com. “This is a war, almost literally, between two men. Everyone of us knows very well stepping into ring that this could be the last time we do that.
“Being a fighter you have to block the reality.â€
Asked how fighters block the brutal reality of their sport, Adamek responded: “We have to. You would have to quit what you’re doing right now if you would think about consequences. There’s no other sport in the world where you KNOW you will feel pain, you know somebody WILL hit you with all his strength. People who are not fighters, no matter what level, will never understand that. What happened to Mago is a tragedy. A tragedy that will happen again, someday, somewhere. We know that. This is a part of boxing. Prayers from me and my family to Mago and his loved ones.â€
Adamek will finish his sparring sessions at his training camp in Jersey City with Monte Barrett and Travis Kaufmann this week.

K2 promoted this show, they should be paying for Abdusalamov's treatment.

It's insane to have to beg the public to donate to cover his medical expenses. His family shouldn't be having to worry about that. Where is HBO? They made big bucks off the show. This could never happen in a legitimate honest sport. Can you imagine a major league baseball player getting hit in the head with a ball and having to send out appeals to the public to donate money to cover his medical expenses?

Magomed is reportedly brain-dead (his brain is no longer functioning) and will not recover. They can keep him "alive" with a machine.

I wasn't sure if I should post this here, but I know at least one person here remembers me talking about my friend in NY, a sports medicine physician. I hadn't spoken to him for a long time, but I tried to call him up a few days ago because he is connected with Roosevelt Hospital where Mago is and ask him if he has any inside info. Last year when I was in Manhattan I walked right by his office and thought I might pop in and say hello, but I didn't...

Why is it bad things always seem to happen much more frequently as the Christmas season approaches?

I haven't seen anything to that effect.

This is truly horrible and I can't begin to express how sad I feel for Mago and his family. Magomed is such a hard-working guy and was obviously trying his best to provide for his family. This is depressing.

Magomed's purse for the fight was $40,000 (in case you're wondering Mike Perez's was 30,000), typically after taxes, promoter expense, and trainer expense, a fighter actually pockets 50% of his purse. So, Magomed fought and was permanently injured over $20,000. I'm sorry to say, but that's crap and $20,000 is not worth risking your life over. Magomed would have been better to take up another profession. Now that he is injured, his family is scrambling to pay for his medical bills, and that's also crap. It'd be nice if HBO chipped in a bit, and by law the promoter should be required to chip in significantly. Thankfully, several people have stepped forward and are helping Mago's family, and these people deserve a lot of respect.

I am a huge boxing fan but I admit it's hard to support boxing when you see things like this happen. There are too many injuries and deaths in boxing. Frankie Leal was recently killed in a fight that should have been stopped earlier. And on HBO back in 2005, I remember when American boxer Leavander Johnson was killed in a fight with Jesus Chavez (once again, that was a fight that should have been stopped 2, even 3 rounds earlier than it was). There's about 1 to 3 deaths per year in boxing and probably 10+ major injuries. Some things need to change in this sport to prevent this happening in the future.

I just feel so horrible about all of this and quite frankly it's hard to be a boxing fan when you see things like this happen. It's horrible. These guys are risking their lives and they're not even being paid adequately. Yes, there is money in boxing if you're a champ or very popular (guys like Klitschko, Mayweather Jr., Hatton, Calzaghe, Berto, Cotto, Alvarez, Kessler, Pacquiao, Chavez Jr, De La Hoya, Bute, Froch, Khan, have made big bucks, multiple $500,000+ purses) but for the other 99% of boxers who aren't champions or aren't that popular, the money is crap and they're underpaid. Sometimes even ranked, top-20 type contenders in boxing often times need a second job on the side to sustain themselves financially. I remember hearing a story recently that Peter Manfredo Jr (a guy who has fought Joe Calzaghe and Jeff Lacy among others) was broke and now working as a janitor. And keep in mind most boxers don't even make it as far as Manfredo did. Frankie Leal died last month over a purse that was probably less than $5,000. That's pathetic, sad, and enraging on so many levels.

Of course, there is a lot of money in boxing at the top level, and boxing does have some of the highest paid athletes in the world (Mayweather Jr., Klitschko, Hatton, De La Hoya all made over $15 Million for a single fight, sometimes multiple times), but it's important to understand they represent only a tiny fraction, less than 1% of all boxers. Boxing also has some of the lowest paid athletes in the world, when you look at the 99% of guys who never become champions or never make an HBO type fight.

The sad truth is that most boxers would be better off in another line of work...

Yes a Manfredo type who has made some 6 figure purses could be broke if he has long waits in between fights. A typical 100K purse might net a fighter 20 to 25K after all of the deductions from various employees and taxes.

Like you stated to make even that level of purse you have to be a popular fringe contender type or even a champion in the lower weight classes that barely make American television. I recall a few Mexican American champions in weight divisions below 126 saying that they needed a second job or a small business to support themselves and their purses were a shade less than this. This might not be popular on this site but the Klitschko's should support Mago's family for the hospital costs for this tragic injury. I recall many instances where Wlad's robe was donated to the highest bidder to support African villages so they got water, a noble cause but this tragedy he was indirectly involved in. I suspect in Wlad's next fight he might announce that he will do this for Mago but I wish somebody could pin down a firm answer from K2 promotions.

No, I agree. I think the Klitschkos are the greatest heavyweights of all time, but I don't know about their social and political priorities. In fact I think the president of Ukraine is right in saying Vitali shouldn't be allowed to run because he doesn't even live in Ukraine - and their "Orange Revolution" gig was, I believe, sponsored by the CIA. So yeah, where are they now? This appealing to the public for charity for Mago is bull****. They made big bucks on that show, HBO and the rest. And yeah, Ambrose, boxers, poorly educated and not very intelligent for the most part (with more than a few glaring exceptions!), and not organized are at the mercy of all the mobsters that hover around boxing like moths around a light, and how much of their pay do they actually receive after all those thugs stick their hands in the pot plus the government tax thugs?

HBO paid $300,000 for Abdusalamov-Perez.

Abdusalamov was to receive $40,000, much of which had to go to his team (trainer, sparring partners, etc). Perez received $30,000.

The promoters (Magomed's Jewish promoter Sampson Lewkowitz and K-2's Tom Loeffler) got the rest ($230,000).

I agree. Vitali is a great fighter, but I hate his pro-Zionist/globalist politics. He wants to distance Ukraine from Russia and have it fall into the orbit of the US/Zionists.

Ironically, although Vitali is pro-Zionist, Max Kellerman and Eric Raskin hate the Klitschkos.

What do you guys think of this article? This feller's theory is that Mago was hurt in the two fights before and had pre-existing damage, vs. Bisbal and McCline. He doesn't think that Perez has shown himself to be a fighter that causes so much damage. But I watched his links to those two fights and I didn't see where Mago was absorbing bad punishment in either. Watching the McCline fight, though, I can't see any punch landing before McCline fell down. Did McCline take a dive? Were they cynically hustling Mago and moving him ahead before he was ready? I don't mean to disparage Mago in any way. He fought so very bravely....

This is very sad - and for me it is even sadder, because as I started to say before I tried to call up a doctor who I was very friendly with when I lived in NYC because he worked with Roosevelt hospital where Mago is. Hard sparring sessions could have caused this too. Over the years a few contenders have died from fighters that weren't punchers and had sustained knock outs a short time before the fatal fight. Ernie Schaaf and Luther McCarty died in this manner.

"I don't think I've read a more spine-chilling sentence than "promoters Leon Margules and Lou DiBella… are establishing a fund to donate and raise funds to help alleviate the financial burden the unfortunate brain injury Abdusalamov suffered Saturday night has placed on him and his family."
Abdusalamov went to work on Saturday night and he may never return home to his wife and three young children. Even if he does, he may not (and probably should not) ever box again. Forcing him and his family to pay even part of the medical bill would be a gross injustice. While America's broken healthcare system may be at fault rather than event's organisers, HBO and the promoters enjoy a far, far bigger share of boxing's wealth than most fighters – for them to ask for donations borders on offensive. They should step up and pay this man's medical bill in full."

Too true.
