i was just on the packers blogging site on yahoo.com and there was a poll question asking "who will replace Donald Driver?" and the answers were Jordy Nelson, Ruvell Martin, James Jones, Jamarko Simmons, or someone else and 53% of the voters picked Nelson.

Readers of ProFootballWeekly.com have voted, and they have decided that Robert Meachem of the Saints will be the wide receiver to have the biggest breakout 2009 season.


The question asked "Which WR will have the biggest breakout season?" Getting a total of 849 out of 2503 votes (34 percent), Meachem was chosen as the top candidate. Coming in a fairly close second was Jordy Nelson of the Packers, who garnered 660 votes (26 percent). Next was the Chiefs' Mark Bradley with 415 votes (17 percent), then Jason Avant of the Eagles with 332 votes (13 percent). Finally, Mike Walker of the Jaguars was selected by 247 people (10 percent)


The poll was inspired by Eric Edholm's July 14th column entitled "Breakout wide receivers who will reward patience."

jordy has only one year of experience how could he have a breakout year? breakout years are for guys who have been in the league for like 3 years.

Meachem isnt going to have a breakout year. This will be his 3rd year, although he was injured his rookie season, it is the playbook that he can't learn. So he had plenty of time to learn the playbook and he was still lining up in the wrong spots and running the wrong routes, and its not like he isnt trying, he has been trying hard, he just doesn't have what it takes mentally, he has shown flashes of being good but I think that is all his career will be, a few flashes. He had this same hype coming into last season.

Meachem had 289 yards compared to Jordy's 369. Its not like the Saints didnt need Meachem's help, they had injuries to a few wide receivers, he had the chance to step up, but was outshined by an UDFA in Lance Moore.

Jordy will definetly have a better season if he is given the chance. Meachem will probably never be good except for one or two fly routes a game.

At least 26 percent of the voters realize Jordy is the better player

If Jordy were black, and Driver were white, I think we all know just who would be phased out, and who would be starting.

Jordy will not have to wait to much longer to become a starting receiver in the league. Hell his situation is better than 90% of white receivers who come into this league! He WILL win the 3rd receiving job and WILL start in Green Bay. DD is 34 now and is signed through 2010, but his body will not hold up the whole season. So i'm going to make a bold prediction and state that Jordy will start and make the most of his opportunity sometime this season due to injury. DD has been about as respectable as any receiver in the NFL can be, but i do not see him in Green and Gold next year.

there are only a handful of black players in the league that i respect. Donald Driver and Derrick Mason along with a few others. anyway i agree with Celtic, Jordy is in a good position to get some serious playing time. Edited by: green fire317

Between the "ageless" Donald Driver and James Jones, it's looking like Jordy Nelson may have to serve a lengthy racial apprenticeship:

The No. 3 wide receiver Saturday night and throughout camp has been James Jones, not Jordy Nelson. Jones had a forgettable second season due in part to a knee injury that lingered from the third exhibition game on.



According to Thompson, Jones is back to his rookie form of 2007, when he caught 47 passes for 676 yards.


"James has his stuff back," said Thompson. "He wasn't well last year. He's feeling good. You can tell he's like he was."


Jones caught an 8-yard out against cornerback Eric Wright, a 24-yard deep crossing route on third and 9 and an 11-yard pass in heavy traffic on another third and 9. One of the knocks on Jones was his ineffectiveness after the catch, but he cut back nicely behind safety Mike Adams to secure the first down.

Update on Jones, he has a hammy. Not wishing anyone an injury except some of the thugs this will put Jones back a bit. Plus unless his hands are better Jones can get those hands of stones at times.

Looks like Nelson may miss a couple games. The silver lining is that Brett Swain may finally see some action. From Rotoworld:

Packers KR Jordy Nelson is in danger of missing a "couple weeks" with a knee injury, according to beat writer Greg Bedard. The team's initial diagnosis was a "bruised" knee, but it knocked him out of Sunday's game and was likely sprained. Tramon Williams will replace Nelson on punt returns. Brett Swain will move into the fourth receiver role.

And another white WR who should be starting loses time to what should be a minor injury. Sorry, but these fortunate few white skill players have to play through injuries, and they don't seem willing to do that. They must know what will happen if they lose significant time- Nelson, despite looking terrific whenever he's touched the ball, was already struggling to win the #3 job over James Jones, who was also a high draft pick and has some talent.

I hope Nelson hurries back, because if Jones does anything (and he already caught a long TD in the last game), the #3 WR job will be his. In a just world, of course, Driver would have been phased out already and Nelson would be a starting WR.

If this Rotoworld blurb is true then Nelson is yet another White player who was demoted while injured, which rarely happens with blacks. If he's a backup again next year then he's pretty close to being screwed, even by a relatively white friendly team:

All the blame on the sack issue has gone to the QB and the line, and no doubt they deserve a good portion, but what about the receivers and the play calling? On TV all we get is a view of the ball holder, so it is reasonable to conclude that the receivers minus a good slot threat or an outlet receiver are just taking up space on the field and not getting open.

One of the caste excusers sniffoids came out and said the offense misses Nelson. From what I gather the Pack passing game is leaving out a large portion of the field as if going into the middle is for "white boys" or rbs, so we will see if the Pack gets back on track with Nelson back in the lineup.

The Packers offense had a players-only meeting this week and hashed out a lot of things. The game tomorrow against Dallas is huge. A loss and their playoff hopes are a long shot. A losing season and the roster (and coaching staff) may get a complete overhaul. A win and they're right in the thick of things. Would be nice to see everyone play better and Jordy give them a lift.

The Pack has alot of character players, but the confidence thruout the offense has been lacking, for that I blame the coaches and Rogers. Yeah I think the top two receivers have been shy about the middle but the coaches should reward a hot hand and I think if they need to dump it over the D-line's head to a back or TE then so be it, let that guy get 10 passes.

While watching the Packers game today (against Dallas), then later the Patriots game against the Colts, the one critique I came away with on Jordy is that I would to see him improve his run blocking. Comparing Jordy to both Welker and Collie today, I noticed that both Wes and Austin were aggressive in finding their blocks and finished their blocks assertively. Jordy on the the other, seemed to shy away from the contact. To me, the bar is higher for him and others this site follows to get meaningful playing time, and it's the little things that will make their mark. I think Jordy is a wonderful talent and should be a regular part of the Packers receiver corps, but as a professional, this would be one thing I think he needs to improve opon
