The Dolphins have lousy linebackers, which is why it's a plus that they drafted Jordan Tripp. The only question is how long Tripp's racial apprenticeship will last. Since he played at Montana, Jordy won't get to start right away no matter how much ability he shows in training camp.

Jordan Tripp Will be a Star Linebacker for Miami Dolphins

It’s not very often a small-school linebacker develops into an NFL star. That, however, is exactly the path Jordan Tripp is on after the Miami Dolphins made him their fifth-round pick during the 2014 NFL Draft.

A physical, instinctive linebacker out of FCS school Montana, the 6’3’’, 234-pound Tripp still has a long way to go before he’s ready to dominate opponents in the NFL. However, with his impressive skill set and excellent athleticism, there’s no denying that Tripp has all of the tools to succeed with the Dolphins.

The first step for Tripp is working his way up the depth chart.

Currently the third-string weak-side linebacker, Tripp is slotted behind subpar starter Philip Wheeler and 2013 fourth-rounder Jelani Jenkins in the pecking order. Chances are that won’t change anytime soon, but the potential is there for him to make significant progress throughout the 2014 campaign.

Slated for significant special teams action, Tripp will be given an opportunity to excel on kick and punt coverage from the get-go. Considering how athletic and tenacious of a player he is, the Montana product should have no problem standing out in that role. Before long, the Dolphins will be forced to give him defensive snaps.

The best part with Tripp is how versatile of a player he is. The Dolphins lined him up at middle linebacker during their rookie minicamp, and he possesses the measurables to essentially step into any of the three linebacker spots. Especially since the Dolphins are looking to reduce Wheeler’s snaps in 2014, a strong showing from Tripp during the preseason could give them enough confidence to at least incorporate him into a rotation so that he can continue adjusting to the speed of the NFL.

Tripp could also get serious looks at middle linebacker if Koa Misi continues to disappoint. He was a captain and leader at Montana, and has the intangibles to take the defensive reins in Miami.

No matter how they do it, the Dolphins must get Tripp on the field soon. He’s a dynamic playmaker with a nose for the football – evidenced by his 10 fumble recoveries in college. Tripp plays with tremendous aggressiveness, is relentless against the run and shows outstanding tackling ability in the open field. While not exactly an enforcer, he’s a smart, reliable player who simply knows how to get the job done.

It might not happen immediately, but Tripp will be a star for the Dolphins in the not-so-distant future. Just be patient Miami fans – it won’t be long before this fifth-round pick proves his worth.

I loved the Tripp pick and I also like the TE we took Arthur Lynch. I'm hoping both of them succeed. I'm thinking our new GM isn't as caste oriented as Jeff Ireland was although our line is still coal black, but that may change as Tyler Larsen now has a shot at the center position with Pouncey being gone and Daryn Colledge was also signed as well

Jordan Tripp was a bargain in the 5th round of the draft. He was very productive in college and tested out to be very athletic.

His best position would be as a weak side linebacker in a 4-3. His second best position would be as a middle linebacker in a 4-3.

After a year of seasoning he should be able to step in as a starter, maybe even sooner. That's if he gets a fair shot.

If Tripp was black he would have probably been drafted in the 3rd round instead of the 5th.

It will be interesting to see how Tripp's career progresses.

Dolphins Trying Jordan Tripp With First Team

The Miami Dolphins have a problem with their linebackers as in they really don’t have any. Jeff Ireland spent a lot of money on two failed attempts to upgrade an aging group when he added Dannelle Ellerbe and Phillip Wheeler. Neither player has made an impact on anything outside of Stephen Ross’ wallet. We get word this week that the team is moving Jordan Tripp up the depth chart and giving him a run with the ones.

The issues is the fact that the Dolphins gave up 84 yards on the ground against Atlanta last Friday night. If that were a regular season one would be thrilled with holding an opponent to that number but two very long runs of 30 plus yards were called back on Atlanta penalties and frankly the linebackers couldn’t get the basic art of tackling down. Wrap, drive, roll your hips. It hasn’t changed since pee-wee football.

In today’s NFL the highlight reel drives many a players attention and as a result, over the years basic tackling has gone away as players try to “hit†the player to the ground, they try arm tackling, grabbing, and taking out the legs. Where is the face mask to the chest, rolling the hips and driving through the player with your shoulders squared? Sure you have to be in front of the runner but guess what? Even when they are they are missing tackles. It sounds simple and at the core it is a simple process but in reality it is not or everyone would be doing it.

Another issue and probably the number one cause of tackle degradation around the league is the CBA. The NFL no lingers allows contact like it did before. Teams are restricted to 14 total contact practices and only a small portion of those practices are committed to tackling drills. From rules that govern the way a player tackles and the rules that govern how often teams can pad to pad practice, it’s no wonder there is a drop in production. That however is not an excuse.

The Dolphins need someone to step up and make plays on the defensive side of the ball and the are hoping that the rookie from Montana, Jordan Tripp, will be that guy. He has been impressive in camp thus far but he has yet to make an impact with the first team. Now he will get that chance. Unfortunately spending a few practices with the number one unit is not going to get him better…see the rules above…but playing this weekend against Tampa Bay will. Tripp needs to be on that field with the ones.

He will be used primarily on the outside but it’s being reported locally that the Dolphins intend to try him in the middle as well.

I'm very high on Jordan Tripp. He was very productive in college and tested out to be very athletic.

The Dolphins got a bargain when they drafted him in the 5th round. A team could be built up real fast by drafting and signing underrated white players.

Tripp's college teammate Brock Coyle was also productive and tested out to be very athletic. He went undrafted but was signed by the Seahawks.

Another productive, athletic linebacker that went undrafted was Justin Anderson. He was signed by the Giants.

NFL teams should learn the lesson of the undrafted Paul Worrilow and give productive, athletic white linebackers a fair chance. They can only benefit.

Since the Dolphins are so weak at linebacker Tripp may end up being a starter this year. I think he will show everyone that he's a starting caliber player.

Where is the face mask to the chest, rolling the hips and driving through the player with your shoulders squared?
This proven method of tackling is no longer taught. They now teach to try to hit the runner with ONE of your shoulders, and don't have your head anywhere near the player you're tackling. Of course, the odds of a missed tackle are increased exponentially with this off-to-the-side method.
The reason this is taught is because of alleged concussion and neck issues. What was happening in reality is that the poorly-coached players would drop their heads rather than focus head-up on the beltline-to-chest area, plant facemask and shoulders and drop the runner. Done correctly, there is LESS chance of injury than torqueing your body with a single-shoulder hit, and stops a runner cold.

Hopefully this is the year the Dolphins give Tripp the reins to their defense. He has a lot of potential!

Tripp has the potential to be a longtime starter. He was injured last year.

It will be interesting to see if he can nail down a linebacker spot.

Tripp is injured again.

Tripp sidelined by ankle injury

Former Missoula Big Sky and University of Montana linebacker Jordan Tripp has suffered a setback in his second NFL season with the Miami Dolphins.

Tripp, a backup and special teams player, injured his right ankle in the second quarter of a 27-10 loss at the Chicago Bears on Thursday. He left Soldier Field in a walking boot and with the help of crutches.

Tripp was still walking with a noticeable limp as he sat out practice on Monday, according to a practice report on the Dolphins' website. The word from camp is that he may not return for a while.

Health issues have dogged Tripp since he entered the NFL in 2014. He sat out the first few games of his rookie season after undergoing an appendectomy.

The fifth-round draft pick also had injuries to his chest, ankle and foot and finished with two solo tackles and one assist. This season he is considered to be on the roster bubble for Miami.

That's too bad he is injured once again. Hopefully Hull and Vigil manage to make the team.

I also noticed they already released 2014 draft pick Te Arthur lynch.

Tripp was signed to Jacksonville's practice squad. Thin gruel but better than nothing.

I'm astonished that the great Paul Posluszny doesn't have a CF thread. Poz broke his right hand late in yesterday's game. If he misses any games, the silver lining is that Jordan Tripp will take his place at ILB:

The reeling Jaguars’ defense sustained another setback today when the team revealed that middle linebacker Paul Posluszny sustained a broken right hand in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee.

The team said today they are “continuing to evaluate injury management options,â€￾ for Posluszny and did not rule him out for the year.

Coach Gus Bradley said if Posluszny can’t play, the Jaguars will use Jordan Tripp at middle linebacker. Tripp took over at strong-side linebacker yesterday for a benched Thurston Armbrister.
