Abell had been dominating and easily outboxing his opponent up until the crowd began to chant for a KO midway in the 4th round. Then, Joey became carelessly aggressive, and got caught with a haymaker that stunned him, then a left hook that put him on the canvas.

But there's some good news to this - the guy that won the fight, Andrew Greeley, is a white man!

George Hamilton/Joe Namath tans aside the guy looked black to me. Anyway it's not a good sign that he was ko'd by that level of opponent.

Yes, Andrew Greeley turns out to be a black guy - for some reason I thought he was white.

You're right, it's not a good sign to be stopped by someone on that level. I was wrong about Joey Abell, he doesn't have a lot of potential - it was wishful thinking on my part, because I've been watching for a top white American heavyweight.

A bit of a disappointment, really. He needs to hit the gym and focus on his weaknesses (which on casual observation seems to be his defense) and come off this loss with renewed determination, unless he plans on an eventual record his sorry opponent has. I hope he grows from it, we'll see in his next fight if he can grow anymore than he has, or if he'll be stuck down in the lower rung for the rest of his career.

I just watched the clip and that was an excellent short right hand delivered with a lot of speed that would have caught a lot of good fighters out. I therefore don't think Abell "sucks".
That being said I don't see him as World Champ material. He has good power and strength but needs to speed things up a bit to become truly world class (plus, as has been said, work on the defense!)

Edited to add - I was amazed he managed to get back onto his feet after the knockdown.

It's bad Joey lost, but he is hardly thrown aside for this. I never thought of him as championship material, or as the best American (Fields and Minto take that honor). He is a slugger, very powerful. Remember, he's had no real amateur experience, he was a football player. This is his second KO loss to limited opposition. But he does have some good wins as well. I do think he needs to train harder. If he can get a good trainer, I still think his potential level is the same as it was before this loss.

Since Joeys first loss, he lost another by split decision and then was disqualified in another. Since then, he's won twice against journeymen, and as he fights alot might be able to climb back up. He's now ranked #65 on boxrec of all American heavyweights. So, a long way to go, but unlike many fighters he is quite active and maybe he's learned from his mistakes.Edited by: referendum

Joey wins again against another journeyman last night, and is now ranked 42 of US heavyweights at boxrec.

Joey Abell won his 4th consecutive fight tonight with a third round TKO of journeyman Billy Willis.

Abell is now 24-4 with 23 KOs.

With last nights win, Joey moves to number 36 of American boxers on boxrec. He's been fighting alot, more than any other white american heavyweight, as far as I can tell, but needs to upgrade his competition if he wants to emerge.

Good for him but Abell is very chinny and has been KO'd 4 times.

Keep an eye on Travis Kaufmann, who does have the talent, size and background to go very far at havyweight.

Interesting fellow this Joey Abell. The 4 losses shouldn't hamper his overall standing one bit. He just needs to fight better competition to gain much needed experience. Here's hoping he wins!

Butler like Abell hasn't translated his amateur success to the pro ranks. He was the 2004 National Golden Gloves champion. Two of his losses came to Eddie Chambers and unbeaten prospect Malik Scott 32-0(11). So it will be interesting to compare Abell's performance(assuming Joey wins) to theirs.

Pro and amateur boxing are almost two different sports. Similar to the NFL and rugby. Many great amateurs have been disappointments as pros because they weren't hard punchers ie Howard Davis or Dan Sherry. Many middling amateurs have been great pros for the reverse reason ie Iran Barkley and Rocky Marciano.

It was fun while it lasted:
