I'm as excited as you are my friend. Thanks for posting the great videos and I agree that the media has ignorred him most of the time. Even Derek Jeter got 1000 times more publicity for his 3000th hit than Thome for his 600th homerun. No agenda here is there? What a joke. This guy is a living legend and he deserves alot more respect from the fans and the media! Keep it up Jim. Pass the druggie who acted like he can't speak english Sosa. To be honest, Sosa shouldn't even be on the list like alot of the other steroid punks.

Thome's back to sitting on the bench now that interleague play is over and there's no DH. What a crock.

I was excited at first that he signed with Philly since Howard was injured, but they seem to be conspiring to give Jim only 1 AB per week and playing their bench scrubs instead of one of the greatest power hitters of all time, who still can hit huge bombs to dead CF. Of course Jim has never gotten the respect of black power hitters so what else do you expect.

I just want 2 more HRs out of him so he can pass the roid monkey Sosa.

Thome's back is to bad for him to play the field. The Phills would love for him to play 1B everyday until Howard returns but Thome couldn't even handle 1 start a week. Jim should try and get back to the AL so he can DH for the rest of the season.

As I said in the off season, Thome going to the NL was one of the great bone headed decisions by an athlete in long time. He has clearly been a DH, and a good one, for a long time. I bet his jew agent got a good percentage of the contract he signed with the Phillies because there is no other sensible reason for him to do it. Heck, Cleveland and the Twins, two teams he's been with could have used him.

Hopefully he will be traded back to the AL to a team with playoff aspirations.

On the bright side, there was a big question as to whether he would come back at all this year. Just 2 more HRs to pass Sosa. Please let it happen. After hitting 4 in about 1 week I'm excited about the prospect.

No mention on ESPN's MLB page under the headlines, and the front page features a negro. Thome catching another on the all time HR list is not worthy of mention!!

PHILADELPHIA (AP)

Pinch-hitter Jim Thome hit a home run leading off the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 on Saturday after Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save in 18 chances this season.

Juan Pierre and Jimmy Rollins also homered for the Phillies, helping manager Charlie Manuel earn his 900th career win.
Thome connected off Jake McGee (2-2) for home run No. 609, tying Sammy Sosa for seventh place on baseball's career list.

Thome still has it, he should be playing more:

What was truly special was Thome's eight-pitch at-bat. McGee was throwing smoke in the 97-98-m.p.h. range, and Thome fouled off some awfully tough pitches to stay alive.

Then he got all of a 97-m.p.h. fastball that he drilled the opposite way, 390 feet to left field

It took the clowns at ESPN until half way through their "highlights" show to mention Thome. Of course the *****-ridden Yankees led off the show. They threw in a snide comment about how some people might "question Thome's Hall of Fame resume" but they did show an interesting statistic -

Jim Thome is now the ALL TIME LEADER in walk off HRs. Look at the names on this list -

Some other interesting stats with Thome in the conversation!

HR per AB's.

Mark McGwire, HR/ every 10.6 AB's, 6,187 AB, 583 HR's, before anyone gets on MM about roids he hit 49 HR's in his rookie season, still a MLB Record. If healthy McGwire, would have hit over 800 HR's

Babe Ruth, HR/ 11.7AB, 8,399 AB, 714 HR's

Barry Bonds, HR/ 12.9AB, 9,847 AB, 762 HR's, If you look at Bonds' early career, he was averaging a HR about every 17 AB's. It wasn't until he started juicing that he really started hitting alot of HR's.

At a HR/ 17 AB's pace, Bonds would have hit around 579 HR's! Assuming he kept that pace. Probably would have been less w/o the roids.

Now Thome: HR/ 13.6AB, 8,319 AB, 609 HR. Not quite there with Ruth or McGwire, but certainly there with Bonds w/o the roids.

Almost 1700 RBI's,(1689), and over 2300 hits, he's a Hall Of Famer!

Oh yeah, Sammy Sosa, HR/ 14.5 AB. 8,813 AB, 609 HR's, Before the roids, he was at around HR/ 18 AB.

Jim Thome is my hero. I love this guy. He is amazing and yet he has always remained so humble. You couldn't imagine a nicer guy and an excellent family man as well. What a monster homerun. Give this guy more at bats! What are they thinking? He is a game changer for sure. The fans love the guy and he reminds me of the players that played long before I was born. Way to go Thome. Keep it up and someday you will be in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown!

I wonder if that list is corrected for the way the league counted walk off homeruns in the old days. For a long time a hitter was only credited with the hit that would drive in the winning runs, a single for a guy on third in a tie game for example or a double for a guy on 2nd, even if he hit it out of the park. I know this cost Ruth several career homeruns and it might be impossible to correct if it's not in the box score. However I would bet that if properly counted Ruth would lead.

What years was this rule used and when did it end? I don't remember homeruns ever being taken away like that, in my lifetime and from what I've read of the earlier days of the sport. If a player hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th to win the game by 2 runs he was always given credit for it. Of course, homeruns were rare until the ball was livened up in the 1920s.

What's new to me is the term "walk off homerun." Don't know when it came into common usage but it wasn't that long ago. They used to be called simply game winning homeruns.

You don't remember when they changed the rule in 1920?? Weren't you paying attention?

from wikipedia "Walk off homerun":

prior to 1920; instead, the game ended at the moment the winning run scored. This rule affected the scoring of 40 hits, from 1884 to 1918, that would now be scored as game winning home runs.[SUP][7][/SUP]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walk-off_home_run

Probably did not effect Ruth though as he only had about 20 homeruns prior to the change, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the walk off info. BTW, Ruth had 49 home runs, includeing a then record 29 in 1919, prior to the introduction of the live ball in 1920. So there's a good chance he could have been robbed of some.

I was working on the farm all that summer with Grandpa and Uncle Zeke and don't remember that incredibly important rule change being instituted.

Wikipedia mentions that 40 hits were effected from 1884 until 1918 so I assumed there were none effected in 1919 when Ruth broke out with his 29. But perhaps there were still some although I think that would have been mentioned.

Don is correct. The term "walk off" home run is very recent; probably less than ten years old. Prior to that, they were referred to simply as game winning home runs.

But Thome’s sizzling hot June now has the slugger re-thinking whether he wants this to be his farewell season.

“It showed me that I can still play,â€￾ Thome said in an interview with Scott Palmer on the Phillies pregame show, Behind the Pinstripes, Sunday afternoon. “And to be honest, it really questions whether or not this will be my last year, to be dead honest.â€￾

Hooray! Thome traded to the AL !
The Orioles were in the market for a designated hitter, and Thome certainly fits the bill. He only has five home runs this year, but he's done so in just 72 plate appearances.Thome is one of the most underrated players of his generation. In a time where steroids were the norm "Country Jim" has never had an allegation against him. Known as one of the good guys in baseball, he's compiled an incredible resume that includes 609 home runs, 1,689 RBI and a .402 on-base percentage.

The trade will be pushed through after both teams conclude their games on Saturday.

I just became a Baltimore Orioles Fan because of this move. This is such exciting news because now he will have a chance to eventually catch Ken Griffey Jr. if he can play another year or two. I really want to see him get as high on the home run list as possible. I know 700 is out of reach but that is ok. To see him get close to the top 5 all time homerun hitters would do it for me. He is an absolute legend! Jim Thome is forever young and I still love watching his every swing!
