Thome's back is to bad for him to play the field. The Phills would love for him to play 1B everyday until Howard returns but Thome couldn't even handle 1 start a week. Jim should try and get back to the AL so he can DH for the rest of the season.
As I said in the off season, Thome going to the NL was one of the great bone headed decisions by an athlete in long time. He has clearly been a DH, and a good one, for a long time. I bet his jew agent got a good percentage of the contract he signed with the Phillies because there is no other sensible reason for him to do it. Heck, Cleveland and the Twins, two teams he's been with could have used him.
No mention on ESPN's MLB page under the headlines, and the front page features a negro. Thome catching another on the all time HR list is not worthy of mention!!

PHILADELPHIA (AP)
Pinch-hitter Jim Thome hit a home run leading off the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 on Saturday after Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save in 18 chances this season.
Juan Pierre and Jimmy Rollins also homered for the Phillies, helping manager Charlie Manuel earn his 900th career win.
Thome connected off Jake McGee (2-2) for home run No. 609, tying Sammy Sosa for seventh place on baseball's career list.

I wonder if that list is corrected for the way the league counted walk off homeruns in the old days. For a long time a hitter was only credited with the hit that would drive in the winning runs, a single for a guy on third in a tie game for example or a double for a guy on 2nd, even if he hit it out of the park. I know this cost Ruth several career homeruns and it might be impossible to correct if it's not in the box score. However I would bet that if properly counted Ruth would lead.
What years was this rule used and when did it end? I don't remember homeruns ever being taken away like that, in my lifetime and from what I've read of the earlier days of the sport. If a player hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th to win the game by 2 runs he was always given credit for it. Of course, homeruns were rare until the ball was livened up in the 1920s.
What's new to me is the term "walk off homerun." Don't know when it came into common usage but it wasn't that long ago. They used to be called simply game winning homeruns.
You don't remember when they changed the rule in 1920?? Weren't you paying attention?
from wikipedia "Walk off homerun":
prior to 1920; instead, the game ended at the moment the winning run scored. This rule affected the scoring of 40 hits, from 1884 to 1918, that would now be scored as game winning home runs.[SUP][7][/SUP]

Probably did not effect Ruth though as he only had about 20 homeruns prior to the change, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the walk off info. BTW, Ruth had 49 home runs, includeing a then record 29 in 1919, prior to the introduction of the live ball in 1920. So there's a good chance he could have been robbed of some.
But Thome’s sizzling hot June now has the slugger re-thinking whether he wants this to be his farewell season.
“It showed me that I can still play,†Thome said in an interview with Scott Palmer on the Phillies pregame show, Behind the Pinstripes, Sunday afternoon. “And to be honest, it really questions whether or not this will be my last year, to be dead honest.â€
The Orioles were in the market for a designated hitter, and Thome certainly fits the bill. He only has five home runs this year, but he's done so in just 72 plate appearances.Thome is one of the most underrated players of his generation. In a time where steroids were the norm "Country Jim" has never had an allegation against him. Known as one of the good guys in baseball, he's compiled an incredible resume that includes 609 home runs, 1,689 RBI and a .402 on-base percentage.
The trade will be pushed through after both teams conclude their games on Saturday.
