(from Fanhouse: Backporch)

Jeremy Shockey took to Twitter to explain to all the football simpletons that LeBron James couldn't cut it. Just in case that wasn't obvious from the outset.

"everyone trust me Lebron James could not play in the NFL! ESPN is crazy to even think he could make a practice squad. he's a 4.9 40 time.."

The thing is, after James made the comments, and Browns head coach Eric Mangini offered a "come on down," some people figured all that was left to do was sign the contract and get him fitted for a a uniform. Not sure how it got to that point, but thankfully, Shockey, who came out of retirement this season to resume his career (Wait, he was in the league last year? Really?), has set us straight.

Still, I'm willing to give Bron the benefit of the doubt on his 40 time. Shockey guesses that "he's a 4.9 40 time," and suggests that he couldn't "make a practice squad." Maybe both are true, but if JaMarcus Russell can earn an NFL paycheck, then I'm not willing to dismiss anything.

I have no difficulty envisioning LeBron excelling at football, probably at TE, if he went the Antonio Gates route of forsaking hoops for football, and all that entailed. Actually Lebron lining as a QB is the shotgun spread would have some interesting possibilities. Otto Graham, who was a basketball star at Northwestern, always mainatined that converted ballers made the best skill players in the NFL. The real question is why LeBron would consider this except as a joke. He has the NBA at his feet, and it will stay there for next decade. There is no advantage to his giving the NFL a shot, unless "needed to take a break" ala Jordan. wink wink.

The media can claim all they want that James and other NBA and NFL players could be good heavyweights. This is not true. Boxers need great hand speed and and power. While James is a good basketball player that doesn't help him in boxing. What is his vertical leap going to accomplish in boxing? Everyone just needs to watch Rocky IV and see that the movie basically predicted the future. Ivan Drago is real today he just comes in the form of the Klitschko's and Povetkin among countless others. Michael Jordan didn't exactly light the baseball world on fire.

Yes, the greatest athlete of all time(not) was hitting below 200 in the minor leagues and had no power to speak of. A pure singles hitter when he could get a hit.

<div>Damn it Deadlift you beat me to it!  I was going to post that.</div>

I'd love to see ol' "Queen" (LeBrown) James greeted with a "Chuck Cecil" style helmet-to-helmet shot!

No, No, No! Lebron is needed at the Indy 500. At present, white woman have lead more laps at indy than black men.

Nah! He'd do better at golf, ripping a 4-iron, and scoring a triple bogey!

Better yet Leborn should become a Nascar driver and show those rednecks how an athlete would do it.

Lebron's staight line "speed" is probably no faster than your average HS athlete (or the DWF squirting Gatoraide into his mouth). Like almost all NBA players, he looks like he's running in quicksand down the court.

I guess we're all supposed to be impressed when a 7'+ guy (with very long arms) can dunk on a 10' rim. At 6' 3", I (and others on my team) could dunk in 9th grade, boring.

LaButt needs to stick to thug-ball, which even the DWF-subculture is quickly losing interest in. For instance, of all the DWFs I know (from work, family, church, etc), not a single one watches the NBA or cares about it in any way.

The NBA is only kept alive by anti-white corperations such a Gatoraide and Nike....and the relentless broadcasting of "games" on TV networks that nobody watches.

It is so hard to understand why the DWF's continue to go to NBA games. I mean first they have to watch mostly black teams. Secondly they listen to whap music inside the arenas. In all reality they have absolutely nothing in common with these hoodlums they watch play. I'd dare you to find one black at a hockey game.

James might be a good football player as a tight end or something like that. He certainly has some coordination and athletic skills. But it is as I always say more about knowing the game then just being an athlete. If he played and had a desire and knack for it he might be good. The point is that you cannot assume just because someone is good at one sport that they would be good at another. It's just like all of the Olympic sprinters that failed at tries to become NFL receivers.

I think that anyone in decent shape that works out and practices should be fairly decent athletes. It always amazes me when the TV announcers praise a QB for example for having surprising speed when they sprint through a hole for a big gain. I mean c'mon these are 20 something men that spend all their time working out. Why wouldn't they be able to run 10-20 yds at a decent pace? It's not like they just came off of the living room couch.

LeBrown would get his @$$ handed to him in the NFL. He might have a half-decent vertical leap & run a 4.9+ 40 y/d, but NO way could he handle the physicality of the NFL. One solid hit/block/tackle & Queen James would be begging to go back to the YO.B.A thugball!

He seems like a pretty good athlete. I don't know his 40time but it may be good considering he runs for a living. He also seems to play strong and physical so I don't think he would be a pushover if he played football. I think the important thing is that his skill set for football is poor. It's more then being an athlete, it's about being good at your sport.

I'd rather see him SAVE swimming. Affletes like LeBron and Ocho Cinco would make us all forget about Michael Phelps.

Brock lesnar, one of the best Power/Speed combinations on the planet, couldnt make it in the NFL, why should lebron james... And i think Lesnar showed in the UFC that hes probably tougher than james ( maybe a little :) )

Football is about technique, skill and aggression more than anything else.

LeBron was an all state recevior as a junior in high school and could if he stuck that route gone to any college he wanted. And If you watch him play he you would now he has increadible speed. I think he could be a great recivior but would be to much of a sissy to play tight end,

It's funny you say this. I knew I remember Mr. Cinco shooting his mouth off about Phelps. http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/Ocho-Cinco-says-he-can-beat-Michael-Phelps?urn=oly,100949 I'm hoping he was joking, but he might be dumb enough to believe his natural black ability (sarcasm intended) could beat the best swimmer in the world.

On the topic, I think some NBA players like Lebron, Rodney Stuckey and Ben Wallace could have been NFL players. I think Wallace was a top recruit that was leaning toward Alabama at one time. Right now, I really can't think of any current white NBA players that I think could naturally transition, but I bet Scott Skiles or Dan Majerle had the ability and build, and maybe even Stockton or Mark Price, but would have to hit the weights.

edit: now that I think about it, I bet Matt Harpring could be a football player. Edited by: Fightingtowin
