Spin: Cleveland's defense is better than advertised, especially at defending the pass, where the team ranks 13th in the league and has nine touchdowns compared to nine interceptions. Still, it's hard to overlook that David Garrard and then rookie Joe Flacco beat up on this squad in back-to-back weeks. Cutler brings more talent than either of those two, so while he won't be a week-leading fantasy type, he'll be A-OK for your purposes.

Well, if the Cleveland defense was good in the first place, I guess it just gets "worse and worse."

Cutler was outstanding, his vision and touch were incredible. His only problems were heaving up a few prayers ala Brett Favre. He was clearly the reason Denver won.

Mel Kiper rips big time on Jay Cutler, saying among other things he hasn't led them to the playoffs yet, and also manages to kick that old junkyard dog Jeff George some more. Blame the best player on the team, who happens to be White, rather than the indescribably bad almost all black defense, for the team's failings. Man this stuff gets old.


This week, Jay Cutler's moaning has distracted Mel Kiper Jr. from his usual draft content. "Talk about whining and complaining -- this is at the top of the list," Kiper says.

Cutler's complaining came about because the Denver Broncos tried to trade Cutler in a three-team deal that would have brought over Matt Cassel from New England. But when the trade fell through, Cutler started to complain.


Kiper says Cassel would have been an "upgrade" over Cutler and that Cutler is, to put it mildly, overrated.





"[Cutler] throws one pass, he's a Hall of Famer," Kiper says. "I've seen the media put him in the Hall of Fame. I had to run to the bathroom quick. It was making me ill. I've been hearing this overhype.





"This guy was overhyped at the combine, he was overhyped at Senior Bowl week, he's been overhyped before he was drafted. The media, they love Jay Cutler. Jay Cutler can do no wrong. I've been saying he's overrated since day one. Everyone's been pounding their chests saying, 'Oh, I love Jay Cutler, I'm a genius.' They have egg on their face now."





Kiper points out that Cutler has yet to lead the Broncos to a winning record or a playoff appearance. Also, Kiper says, "[Cutler] makes throws that leave you scratching your head, which I said on draft day when he was picked. Yeah, he's got a strong arm, but my daughter knew he had a strong arm. She could've written that report."


Kiper compares Cutler to Jeff George. "Jeff George had a great arm, and Jeff George had a lot of great games in this league, and people were putting Jeff George in the HOF early in his career," Kiper says. "So I'm just telling you, this is ridiculous."





Also, Cutler once said he had a better arm than John Elway. Not surprisingly, Kiper isn't a big fan of that comment, either. "So what? Who cares? Why would you make a comparison to John Elway? That could be taken like you're in a position to critique the quarterback that is a legend."

I would like to know why this Kiper guy has a job. It sounds like he is worried that the fantastic work Cutler has put in will discredit him since Kiper says he has been writing negatively about Cutler since the draft, and is desperate to add whatever force he can to the knife in Cutler's back. What a jerk.

With Jay Cutler standing firm in his Big Baby routine (apparently with a lot of encouragement from his agent Bus Cook), his backup Chris Simms could end up as the starter. Simms looked pretty darn good in 2005, the only year he did much starting, before he busted his spleen. Since then he was at the mercy of QB killer Chuckie Gruden, who loved to rotate various white quarterbacks in and out of the lineup.


Simms certainly has the pedigree to succeed. The Broncos offense might still be very good with Simms if Denver lets Cutler stew in his juices for a season or trades him but doesn't get a starting QB in return.

Cutler better be good right off the bat in Chicago with the Bears atrocious receivers. The DWFs may be excited now, but they'll turn on him even more viciously than they did on Rex Grossman if the team struggles. Cutler now has a reputation as a baby and the DWFs expect quarterbacks to singlehandedly win games no matter how poor the talent around them.

One constant I have noticed in the 50 years I have followed football is that it is very rare for a team to trade its starting quarterback to you. It will happen if the QB is considered over the hill or has a bad arm. Another reason is if the QB has become very unpopular with the home fans. An example of this is when in 1964 the Eagles and Redskins swapped Sonny Jurgensen for Norm Snead. This was a "best for all concerned trade."

Another reason for trading a starting QB is when a team has two QB's who take turns starting and has to unload one of them. Sometimes a supposedly over the hill QB has some good years left. Examples were Norm Van Brocklin and Y.A. Tittle.

Cutler is around 25 and threw for over 4500 yards last year. The closest precedent I can think of is when the Giants obtained Fran Tarkenton (then 27) from Minnesota in 1967 for a bundle of draft choices. Jay Cutler will be expected to win or else. Time will tell if he has the mental attitude and the supporting cast to succeed.

Did whoever hired Josh McDaniels know the wunderkind wanted to replace Cutler with Cassel? Either they did, and hired him anyway, which means they're idiots, or they didn't, which means they didn't ask enough questions in the interview and they're idiots.

As a Bears fan, I'm excited beyond belief that we got Cutler. But other than Olsen, who the hell is he going to throw to? My fanciful wish (though less fanciful than Cutler coming to Chicago I might add) is drafting WR Jordan Shipley in the 7th. That, and signing Matt Jones and Torry Holt. We could also use Kaev(however you spell his name - The safety from N.O) in the secondary. It would be an insult to have Bennet and Davis on the field as Cutler's targets.

Shipley is returning to Texas fora 6th year of eligibility this fall. But I agree with Holt and Jones -- that would be a huge upgrade, and combined with Olsen and Forte the running back the Bears would have an instant dynamic offense, assuming their United Nations offensiveline isn't awful. Drew Bennett would also be a nice upgrade on what they have now at receiver. Of course, Mike Hass would be too and we know how Lovie Smith deals with white receivers and running backs (Brock Forsey).

Andrew Lynch is right; Denver got the better of this deal. Cutler is extremely talented, but the Bears' receivers, apart from Olsen, are lead-handed morons. That the Bears continue to think their problems revolve exclusively around QB while continuing to explain how D. Hester really IS SO an NFL-quality WR tells you all you need to know about Lovie and co. Forget about how long it's been since the Bears had a great QB. How many first-rate WRs have they had since Johnny Morris (or maybe Gault) retired?

yes i hate when people argue that, every black quarterback, they argue that they dont provide them with good receivers. Vince Young in Tennessee, Kerry Collins steps up and somehow makes use of the same receivers. Same with Mcnabb, saying Curtis isnt a good receiver. Even before Curtis Mcnabb went down and Garcia came in did well too.

Ill probably do it after the draft (which also happens to be my wedding day! i dont know whether to be excited or nervous haha)

i try to do the lesser known players, alot of people believe in Welker, and compare every good White receiver to Welker. Apparently hes the only White receiver drunk White fans can consider good, it took two 1,000 yard seasons and a Pro Bowl to do that. But even still some discredit him because of Moss, so i will get around to make one of him. I know there is one up of his 2007 season, but barely any footage.

And I have 3 weeks to make videos for players in the draft which ive been slacking on because of school. I had a test today and overslept, i hope they let me make it up.

Also, I have been completely lost in trying to make this Pickering video. Its a streaming video and i havent found a way to get it on to my hard drive.

Cutler is being treated as the second coming of Christ in Chicago, and in my short time on this earth i dont remember a white guy being so hyped up.

I hope he excels with the Bears, I admire his confidence in himself and how he wasnt willing to be McDaniel's second choice. More importantly i hope he sticks it to Kiper's prediction that hes a bust...despite already being a probowler.

Cutler has been getting high praise for his attitude and performance in these off season workouts with the Bears. He has supplanted Urlacher as the face of the franchise without even playing a down for them yet.

Cutler is being set up to be the playerthe media and fanshate when the Bears o-line fails to protect him and his dumb-ass receivers fail to execute Mike Martz's precise timing offense, and then drop passes when they do. Not that the Chicago DWFs would need any encouragement in that direction.

Scout's honor: Jay Cutler is flawed

An NFL advance scout recently dissected the Bears, breaking down their preseason film and probing for strengths and weaknesses.



His grim forecast calls for a mushroom cloud over team headquarters.



''The person who is going to kill this team is the quarterback,'' he said of Jay Cutler. ''Don't take my word for it. Talk to somebody who really knows quarterback fundamentals, and fundamentally this guy is a nightmare right now. Where he holds the ball, how he winds up. His lower half is completely out of sync with his upper half. He almost looks like a guy out in the parking lot throwing a football. Fundamentally, as far as stepping into his throws, setting his feet, the way he carries the ball, it's not very good.

Teddy Bruschi was analyzing the upcoming Pats-Bears game and had this to say about Cutler. He acknowledges his athleticism but can't leave it at that. What the heck does the last line mean?

Tedy: He's played his best over the last five games, with just three interceptions. It all comes down to making good decisions. One thing, though, is that he has been sacked -- eight times in the last two games. With that, he's had to use his athletic ability. He's had 12 rush attempts in the last two games and those aren't planned rushes. He's running for his life out there at times, but he has the athletic ability to avoid pressure and extend the series with his feet, moving the chains -- getting those third-and-6 conversions. He can impersonate an athlete at times."
