The best tribute I can think to the best all around tight end to play the game(sorry Tony Gonzalez)....

Jason Witten was the Wes Welker/Jordy Nelson of his position, ending the 20 year drought of White tight ends without a thousand yards receiving and playing long enough to see Whites subsequently dominate the upper tier of NFL TEs. That domination should be the same at WR, but I didn't think it would be allowed to happen at tight end, which shows the great White talent at the position along with the ever-diminishing black talent pool.

Witten always conducted himself admirably on and off the field, I'm sure he'll do well as a TV analyst but it's a shame to see his career end. He's the best all-around tight end in NFL history, given his ability to both catch and block combined with his Iron Man durability and all-time receiving statistics.

Great post Don. I never really equated Witten to Welker in terms for what he did for white TEs but you are absolutely correct. I have to imagine Witten is what most men/athletes/football players were in America 1.0. He absolutely was the best TE of the 2000s and played at a high level through last season - better than Gonzalez, Gates, Graham who did not excel at the finer points of the TE position.

Also it will be nice to see Prescott struggle more as he loses his security blanket.
