Jared Goff really came on strong the latter part of the season despite being banged up and having no one to throw to other than the rookie St. Brown (Hockenson went on IR and didn't have the big breakout season many thought he would). Goff was written off as a bust his rookie season despite being the first overall pick, and he was written off again when he went to the Lions. Looks like the Caste Clown hive mind "experts" were wrong yet again about a White player:

With the No. 2 overall pick and two picks in the first round, the Lions need to decide whether to build around Goff or draft his replacement this offseason. Build around Goff vs. draft his replacement. The answer to this is so obvious that you'd think even Detroit couldn't screw it up, but I've learned never to underestimate the stupidity of a Lions GM. Having the #2 overall pick, an extra first round pick, and a guy already on the roster who's good enough to be a franchise quarterback is a situation that few NFL teams luck into.

I really, really hope they do the right thing and in a few months we don't end up hearing "Detroit's first pick has mouthwatering upside and will revolutionize the QB position."

Goff has Hockenson, who is good but not yet elite, St. Brown the rookie last year who was good down the stretch but is no star yet, and new additions D. J. Chark, a disappointment with the Jags, and the injured 2022 rookie pick Williams. Somehow that translates to "a fantastic receiving corps." Still one of the worst in the league until proven otherwise is more accurate. But the media has been rooting for Goff to fail ever since he was drafted.

Goff is facing a make-or-break season after Detroit spent its offseason improving his supporting cast without acquiring a potential successor at quarterback, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports. Analysis: The Lions' front office not only steered clear of the quarterback market in free agency, they did not spend a draft pick on a developmental prospect, either. Instead, they bolstered Goff's receiving options with DJ Chark, first-round rookie Jameson Williams (knee) and tight end James Mitchell (knee). Now, Goff has a fantastic receiving corps to complement a highly-pedigreed offensive line and a capable backfield. If Goff can't succeed within this talented offensive roster, it seems highly likely that Detroit will look for someone who can next offseason, when Goff could be cut with relatively minimal salary cap implications.

As a passive Lions fan, I’m usually content to smirk as they get routed on Thanksgiving, as is tradition, or blow a late lead during a rare nationally-broadcasted game. They’ve had the same identity as a harmless underdog for decades, which is really unique in the NFL. Even their moonlighting back in the 1999 playoffs was a blowout loss in the first round, like nature was correcting itself.

Aidan Hutchinson could become a franchise star. Dan Campbell seems like an upstanding, sympathetic head coach. Though it’s not a lot, drafting Malcom Rodriguez also made their defense whiter.

Top to bottom though, this is still a lousy team. Goff will need a Herculean performance this season to remain a starter the following year. The vaunted 2023 quarterback class (which is really just the two pint-sized black quarterbacks from Ohio State and Alabama) is looming. While the whole roster still needs work, how much from Goff will be enough?

It’s extra-maddening to compare that DeShaun Watson parlayed a 4-12 record and 1+ lost seasons as a sex pest into a $250 million franchise gig. For once, I’ll be rooting for the Lions to win every game so that Goff can achieve the invisible threshold of wins + stats that solidifies his standing, knowing that no numbers will ever be ‘good enough’ for many people.

The much maligned and scapegoated Jared Goff is currently leading the league with 11 TDs. He is also at the helm of the best scoring offense in the NFL with a stellar 35 points per game. Why are the Lions 1-3? The defense is ranked 32nd in the league. Hopefully they can tighten up so that a possible career year from Goff isn't wasted.

After last night's game, Jared Goff has now thrown 359 passes without an interception, the third longest streak in NFL history behind only Aaron Rodgers (402) and Tom Brady (399). He had the best TD passes to interceptions ratio in the league last year at 29/7.
