33 year old Slovenian Jan Zaveck claimed the IBF Welterweight title today with a third round knockout of South African Isaac Hlatshwayo. He's the first ever Slovenian boxing world champ.

Fantastic news!

I didn't think he had much of a chance of winning in South Africa, but he didn't let it go to the judges cards.

Alot of white champs have popped up at 154lbs and 147 lately. I am loving it. We just need to get a few more belts back in the upper weight divisions.

Great win by Jan Zaveck!

It's even better when he did it on African home turf!

IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (29-1, 17 KOs) scored a twelfth
round TKO over #15 ranked contender Rodolfo Martinez (36-4-1, 13 KOs) on
Friday night at the Tivoli Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The much
quicker Zaveck was in command from the get-go, strafing the rugged
Martinez repeatedly with sharp combinations. The bout was finally waved
off by the referee with :40 seconds left in the bout, although Martinez
was still game to continue.

Zaveck outpoints Ushona

Former IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck (32-2, 18 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Bethuel Tyson Ushona (25-2-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday night at the Tabor Arena in Maribor, Slovenia. Scores were 117-109, 117-109, 119-110.

Zaveck said afterward that the victory is the first step towards re-capturing the world championship he lost to Andre Berto last September.

Zaveck is currently fighting another hyped prospect in Keith Thurmand. He lost the first 5 rounds but had a strong 6th round and might be rallying....
Zaveck is faded now. He's still tough though, he lasted the distance with a young, very strong puncher.

In the post-fight interview, I noticed Thurman appears to have more European heritage than negro.

I watched Jan Zaveck's fight last night against Keith Thurman, and he and his team deserve credit for their effort. Jan gave a tough effort and even managed to win, by my count, 3 rounds in the fight. The judges all scored the fight 120-108, not that it would have changed the result because clearly Zaveck lost, but these judges were incorrect and the actual score of the fight should have been 117-111, give or take a point either way.

We have to understand that Jan is 36 years old. 36 is starting to get older, and especially in lower weight classes (such as welterweight) that age is going to show itself more. 36 at heavyweight is not that old ("old" at heavyweight would probably be 38+), but 36 at lightweight or welterweight is really starting to get to the end of the road. Also, some fighters fade faster than others. So what I'm saying is that I think Jan has faded a bit from say, 3 years ago when he was at his best. He seems slower and not able to punch as often as he used to.

Watching the fight with Thurman, Zaveck had good rounds 5, 6, 7, and 9 I believe. I thought he won 5, 6, and 9. In those rounds, he was able to land quite a lot of punches, left hooks, uppercuts, and right hands.

It's a shame Zaveck didn't hit just a little bit harder, because he would have had Thurman in deep trouble if he had a bit more power in his shots. He was certainly connecting, and bothering Thurman a bit, but with more power, you might have seen a different fight. Nevertheless, it's a solid effort from Zaveck and one he can be proud of. There's no quit in Zaveck and he gave a respectable performance.
