In the 1970's you had James Caan and Burt Reynolds as the image of macho men. Caan because of his portrayal of Italian American fictional psycho Sonny Corleone and Reynolds for his mustache and Deliverance and various B action films from the late 70's.

Caan who was a college running back seemed to be typecast as an ethnic Italian tough guy or athlete as before he played Sonny he played Brian Picallo who was a former Bear who died of cancer while still an active NFL player.

IMO the best overall character Caan played was the professional lone wolf thief in the movie Thief. Here's Caan as Sonny kicking butt...

"Godfather" one of America's greatest movies. Too bad they put out GF 2 and 3.

Yes, Rollerball. Forgot about that one. Godfather, Brian's Song, Misery, and another one I enjoyed him in was "Thief." If you've never seen that one, watch it. It's great.

One of my favorite scenes of his career is his scoring the final point of the season in the game of death against team Tokyo in Roller
ball it sums of what it means to be a gladiator...
