They just said on TV before the Arsenal v Liverpool match that Balotelli has been sent back to Milan. Even with Liverpool paying half his wages why would Milan want him back? At Liverpool he had four goals. One in the EPL, one goal in Champions League, one goal in Europa League, and one goal in either the FA or Capital One Cup - I can't recall which. It's almost unbelievable that anyone outside of MLS still wants him.

On Saturday, August 22 Seria A season 2015/16 started with the game Verona- Roma 1:1. As a summary from the 2014/15 season, here is how it ended:

Chanpion: Juventus (4rd title in a row)
Champion's League spots: Roma, Lazio (qualifications against Bayer Leverkusen, Lazio won first round 1:0 at home)
Europa League spots: Fiorentina, Napoli, Sampdoria (qualifications lost against Vojvodina/Serbia)
Relegated to Serie B: Cesena, Parma, Cagliari
Promoted from Serie B: Carpi, Frosinone, Bologna

Seria A teams continue to struggle financially to compete for talents with teams from the Premier League and La Liga, but nevertheless they were the most successful league in European competitions behind La Liga (Juventus was a CL finalist, Napoli and Fiorentina semi-finalist in Europa League), so they must be doing something right, even with relatively limited resources.

The favorites for winning the title are the usual suspects. Juventus this year seems to be significantly weaker with the departure of Tevez, Vidal and Pirlo. Napoli, Roma and Inter are possible competitors. I personally see Inter as stronger than last year, while the first two contenders (Roma and Napoli) somewhat weaker. Milan in my opinion is not yet at the level where they could attack the scudetto title, while Fiorentina has a good team and could be a surprise. Lazio is also a possible surprise. The main Europa League candidates are with Sampdoria and a possible surprise (in my opinion) Sassuolo. This year there are some really small teams in Serie A - Carpi and Frosinone - which are prime candidates for the relegation together with Empoli which lost some of their best players to bigger teams and Chievo.

Racially, the league is still overwhelmingly White (83.6%) and is actually slightly whiter than last year (when it was 82.7% White). A significant presence of Blacks and Arabs is mostly due to transfers via France which has become a main entry point for these "talent pools" in the whole of Europe. At this point (the transfer market is opened until September 2 and there are many transfer deals still in progress) it seems almost certain that everybody's favorite player - Mario Balotelli - is coming back to AC Milan, so at least we'll know who we will NOT be supporting this year.
Financially the league is still reeling from last year's bankrupcy of Parma, and there are several teams who are not in a good position (Genova, for example). As elsewhere in Europe, concentration of wealth in 1-2 teams (in this case - Juventus) is in progress, while smaller teams are struggling. The value of existing teams player assets increased by some 8% (from 2.186 M euros in 2014 to 2.360), either through new acquisitions or through the increase of existing players value.

Even though they are the main favorites to win Serie A, they seem to be weaker this year than last. They are still negotiating for the black Colombian Juan Cuadrado (Striker, Chelsea) and Alex Sandro (black Brazilian Left Back from Porto), which seem to be likely arrivals, raising the black percentage. They are lacking first and foremost in creativity, and the experiment with Pogba (mr. 100 Million) as a play-maker is likely to be a failure.

At the moment of this writing, it seems that Mario Balotelli will be joining them (paid mostly by Liverpool). It doesn't look good. Pippo Inzaghi was building a team made mostly of young Italians and the project was looking promising. The new coach - Sinisa Mihajlovic - seems to be poised to undo most of that work. Balottelli was probably brought in on a loan because he's cheap (most of his pay will be paid by Liverpool). The new partial owner - Mr. Bee (the Chinese-Thai businessman) has not brought the money they expected from him and most of the transfers were done with the money from Silvio Berlusconi. Also, Milan's new partnership with Doyen Sperts - a financial speculator company buying and selling players (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...artnership-with-doyen-sports-raises-questions ) doesn't look promising. EL place contender.

If the first match day can be taken as a harbinger of things to come, a few things should be noted:

- Juevntus was a shadow of its former self, a team without clear ideas of what to do with the ball. Pogba did almost all the corners and free kicks and almost all of these ended up in the stands. It is obvious that Pogba is not a Pirlo and I would predict that Pogba's price (which was pumped up as high as 100M euros by sympathetic journalists) will deflate quickly. In addition, Juve doesn't have a player like Vidal which was fundamental in their game last year and would raise the aggression level of their middle field significantly. Lastly, They don't have a player like Carlos Tevez in attack which. We'll see how this will look like, but for now it doesn't look good.
- Fiorentina confirmed to be a team to keep an eye on, with their easy victory against AC Milan on Sunday, while Milan was a disappointment. Several bright points for Fiorentina were the Spanish defender Marcos Alonso who scored a nice goal from a free kick, in middlefield the Spanish Borca Valero confirmed a string of good performances extending from last year, while in attack, the Slovenian Ilicic and (to a lesser degree) the Croatian Kalinic who arrived from the Ukrainian side Dnipro, seem to be a good match. Milan on the other hand was pretty harmless, with the only danger emanating from the middlefielder Bonaventura who arrived from Atalanta last year.
- Inter put on a solid performance against Atalanta with the winning goal from Jovetic in extra time and might to be one of the main contenders for the title.
