Is the white NBA point guard going the way of the cornerbacks?

Putting aside Goran Dragic who is considered a combo guard there is only one starting white PG in the NBA and the T- Wolves have been trying their hardest to run him out of town. Ricky Rubio has been playing his best ball of late which means he is scoring some points and shooting over 40%. To be fair he has not shot the ball well his entire career so it is hard to tell if he is truly turning the corner. And Rubio is not really a star at least not yet.
After Rubio there does not seem to be anyone coming down the pike. Just a black hole so to speak. Former Gonzaga grad and Jazz great John Stockton was the sterling PG who ruled the roost from the mid 80's through the early 2000's. Mark Price was also a key fixture during that period up until 1998 or so. Then two time MVP Steve Nash took the mantle from 1996-2012. And don't forget the flashy Jason Williams who played around the same time as Nash. These guys were stars. Today there are a few white back up PG's but certainly no stars.
And like I said looking down the road for miles and miles I see no star white point guards ( unless I am missing someone) emerging in the NBA for at least six years. Grayson Allen is like Dragic , more of a combo guard and there is nothing wrong with that. But having zero white PG's around the bend is just another annoying trend we have to gulp down. Following sports for me at least is a masochistic ordeal. There might come a time where I say screw this and walk away. I believe some of the members here have already done that.

Doesn't TJ McConnell start for the 76ers? I know he is not a star but maybe in another year or two if he can score more. I thought the kid from Villanova last year might have a chance but he vanished. Who knows but we could use some more in the very near future!

TJ might be a starter right. I don't think ex Cav Matthew D of the Bucks starts but I could be wrong there too. But the star power is lacking for white PG's and the future looks bleak for some time unless someone sneaks through the cracks.

Interested to see where Alford and Koenig end up in the pros this summer in the draft. They'll probably be ignored for the real affletes that can dunk, but can't shoot a free throw. Both are sharpshooters with some fire to their games and nice ball handling skills. Grayson Allen, Bryant McIntosh, Luke Kennard all should be drafted next year as guards. Probably forgetting a few others.

Arcidiacono was cold blooded during Nova's championship run. Typical of the NBA to bury him.. DiVencenzo has a shot at the league. Only a freshman, he's going to be really good next season.

Yes, TJ McConnell is the staring PG for the 76ers. Dellavedova has started in some games as well. Dragic is listed as the starting PG for the Miami Heat. So that make it 3 white PG starters and one part time starter.
As early as 2014-15, Steve Blake was also a part time starter at PG. It's stinks, I know.
Jack Lambert does a good job on posting about college stars. Maybe he knows if there's anyone (PG), that has a chance to make the NBA.

Sometimes when I think about this, I watch video of Pete Maravich. I know he was a shooting guard, but he was the best ball handler I've ever seen. Jason "white chocolate" Williams was pretty good as well. I can think of other guys as well who could have made it, such as Bobby Hurley, if not for his almost fatal car accident. I know I'm going back, but you have to wonder where all these guys have gone?
As I said. It stinks! I miss guys like Bird and Maravich!

New York Knicks PG Ron Baker, Wichita State, got the start last night for the Knicks, scoring 10 and dishing out 6 assists. The Sapient pointed out on the NBA season thread that the Knicks had 4 white starters including Baker.
Rubio scored a career high 33 points Thursday night.

If Baker develops we can call him Ron Baker "the assist maker". Lol. Good to see the Knicks trying some different lineups. They have nothing to lose as they already are eliminated from the playoffs.

Looks like Melo will be gone next year for NYK as well. Happy for Baker!!

Scott Skiles is another White point guard who would never get an opportunity in today's NBA. He had a solid career, including an NBA single game record 30 assists.

At the beginning of this season he was in the D league, along with Jared Uthoff.

Beno Udrih a Euro vet I believe is still playing for the Pistons as well. Nik Stauskas of the 76ers plays some PG when McConnell is out.

If Rubio keeps scoring like he did at the end of the season, he will find himself participating in a few All-Star Games. It's really hard to say that the white PG is being phased out, when the line between traditional point guards and this Chris Paul/Kyrie Irving shoot first point guard is emerging. You are seeing the league move away from a "big-body presence, heavy interior game" to a "stretch the floor with shooters game".

Point Forwards are starting to become more and more prevalent, and I don't see the trend changing anytime soon. Yet another innovation brought on by the best small forward of all time Mr. Larry Bird himself.

There are plenty of good white point guards, they just don't get the opportunity.

TJ McConnel is a D-league prospect who when given the chance delivered very solid actual playmaking and hit clutch shots including game winners.,

The league in general has been debased so much in terms of rules and strategy, the point guard just isn't used anymore. Modern so called black point guards are just pick and roll and iso scorers. This is why the so called US Dream Team looked like absolute trash barely beating Australia. The modern black NBA player has no moves and no game outside the pick and roll.

Excellent post! Can't agree more pick and roll and isolation plays are probably the only plays I see called and executed. Scoring first point guards, lack of fundamentals, and lack of white stars have crippled the NBA.

I think we are witnessing a revival of white point and shooting guards. The next 5 to 10 years should be interesting. I hope this trend continues even if it's is a small movement at the moment.

I wanted to post this video about the greatest nba point guard to ever live. John Stockton played 19 seasons and is still the nba all time steals and assists leader! Incredible player.

You guys need to check out this guys channel. His name is Mike Malat and he can dribble as good as almost any guard in the nba currently. The kid can also pass and shoot the lights out. He is 27 and has
played in Europe and Canada at the professional level. In all of the videos I watch on youtube he is going off against nba players. Some team needs to give this guy a chance. He is so fun to watch!

Nice!

Speaking of guys with great handle, I think Grayson Boucher aka The Professor probably is the best of all time. Some of you guys might remember when he was young and got pretty famous on the And1 mixtape tour. Well he’s just been working on his game ever since and at 35 now is an all time wizard with the ball. NBA guys, like James Harden for example, have come to him for pointers. Here’s a small sampling of what he can do:

I remember hearing him say that he gets asked constantly if he could have played in the NBA. He said he thought he could have but would have had to toil for years overseas to make it as a backup PG in the NBA. Instead he chose to build his brand and solidify his legend as possibly the greatest streetballer ever. Currently he’s got 4.2 million subs on his YouTube channel so I think he’s fine without an NBA career.

The 2020 NBA draft is definatly gonna see a boom in white PG's, with 3 white Americans and 1 Euro potdntially going in next years draft!!

The 1st if those Americans projected to go are Arizona (Fr) PG Nico Mannion 6'3 180 who's not only the top white but also the top PG period in the whole 2020 draft, and he's almost a lock. Nico is the son of former NBA SG Sean Mannion who played as a 3pt specialist for few seasons in the 90's. Plain and simple Nico Mannion will be much better than his father.

Oregon (Sr) PG Payton Pritchard 6'2 200 was one of the many who underclassmen who tested the waters before pulling out in 2019 and likely would've been a late 2nd rd pick,. Pritchard will return for his final season at Oregon as perhaps the best (Sr) PG in the nation, and should push himself into the 1sr rd discussion.

Georgetown (So) CG Mac McMclung 6'2 185 was one of most exciting players in the country last season as a freshman, and without Zion in the picture America might be about to witness the Mcclung show! McClung isn't a sure thing to enter the 2020 draft, but if he continues to make strides as a true PG don't be surprised if NBA teams gobble him up in the 2020's lottery

Latvia PG Arturs Zagars 6'3 170 also tested the draft waters in 2019 before pulling out, and will look to solidify himself as a sure 2nd rd pick. Zagars is not your typical white/Euro PG as his best attributes are his ball handling/quickness (not shooting/passing), and his handle's so advanced that hes often compared to a white/Euro Kyrie Irving! If you watch his highlights you'll knowwhy Kyrie is his best comparison!

Here is a video of the summer league nba hilights of Tyler Hero. While not a point guard, he is one hell of a shooting guard born and raised here in the U. S. The kid has confidence like a
veteran and is making the transition so far look easy. He is a phenomenal shooter. He should become a star and they are going to love him in Miami.
