Along with Devin Quinn, who I just mentioned, that's 2 white kids in the Top 10 in the country for boys 100m.
Could be a great season!

Ian Mack won the 200m and 400m yesterday at the Nevada HS Championships.
He also ran on a relay team that took 2nd.
Today he goes for the triple gold in the 100m. Hope he's not too tired.

Ian Mack completed his quest for triple gold at the Nevada Stat meet yesterday.
He won the 100m, the 200m, and the 400m.
His time in the 400m of 47.04 is a new meet record.

i attended the Arkansas Meet of Champs yesterday, and despite the small rate of participation in track by White athletes in my state (virtually all the fast White kids play baseball or soccer in the spring and VERY few go out for track in the non-distance events), the "deceptive blue collar overachievers" "somehow" managed to demonstrate their "White privilege" by "raycissming" the "poor, downtrodden" blacks and hispanics who doubtlessly were intimidated by both the heartless culture of colonialism and the fast heels of their White oppressors. only raycissm can explain why minorities don't dominate in every aspect of life. right?

and we all "know" that Whitey can't run fast or jump high.

after all, the results speak for themselves:

a White girl won the pole vault. (she set the all-time state record, as well.)
a White boy won the pole vault.
a White boy won the long jump.
a White girl took second in the high jump.
a White boy won the high jump. (another one took second.)
a White girl took second in the triple jump.
a White boy won the triple jump.
a White girl won the shot put.
a White boy won the shot put.
a White girl won the discus.
a White boy took second in the discus.
a White girl took second in the 100-meter hurdles.
a White girl won the 300-meter hurdles.
a White boy took second in the 200-meters.
a White girl won the 400-meters.

an all-White quartet of girls took second in the 4x100 relay. (3 of the top 4 teams had at least two White athletes.)
an all-White quartet of girls won the 4x400 relay. (the third place team was also all-White.)
a White boy was the fastest leg and anchor for the 2/4 team who won the 4x400 relay. (they set the meet record, as well.)
an all-White quartet of girls won the 4x800 relay. (they set an all-time state record, as well.)
a White boy was the fastest leg and anchor for the racially diverse team who won the 4x800 relay. (an all-White quartet took third.)

so, i guess, it's obvious that White athletes can't compete with the "dynamic" darker-skinned folks. smirk.

Filippo Tortu (Italy) just ran 10.33 (0.6) in finishing 2nd to Richard Kilty in an Italian meet.
He won't be 17 till next month

I watched the race again with my eye on Tortu instead of Kilty.
He had a poor start, and leaned too soon at the line - and nearly fell over.
He definitely has a better race in him.
Looking forward to seeing more of him.

I'm glad we got this video of Kilty's run because unearthing 16 year old Tortu may be an additional blessing.
I've found another of his runs, 200m, from 2 months ago where he creates an Italian under 18 record 21.17 (to bookend with his 10.33/100 record).
At 16 he's not only quicker than Mennea at 18 but has a smooth, efficient style too

Devin Quinn won both the 100 and 200 in the Florida state championships this weekend.

Devin Quinn won the 100 and 200 at the Golden South Classic today, which is like an all-star meet for high schoolers in the South.
His times were 10.49 (1.0w) in the 100m and 21.13 (-0.2w) in the 200m.

Devin and Ian Mack of Neveda are both among the fastest HS sprinters in the country this year. Last year Curtis Godin was one of the fastest HS sprinters in the country.
We have a mini renaissance going here

i stumbled across a mention that the Illinois big schools (3A) State Championship finals are today, so i took a spare moment to look at the sprint qualifiers. "strangely," in a state with so much "diversity" several of the fastest kids are boring vanilla rayciss oppressor types.

in the boys 100-meter finals, there are 3 White cats (and two of the favorites), including Alex Teague who was tied for the fastest time in the qualifying heats (10.52), though the heats were run in windy conditions.

also among the favorites is Scotty Miller (10.61 in the qualifying heat). Miller has a personal-best wind-legal 10.53 this year, which is the fastest time in the state. he sustained a hamstring injury yesterday and withdrew from the 200.

rounding out the field is Connor Boos, who is on the outside looking in with his 10.73.

in the boys 200, it looks to be wide open with Miller (21.26 personal-best this year) not running due to the aforementioned hammy. Teague (21.79 yesterday) and Boos (21.90 yesterday) are both in the hunt for medals.

in the boys 400, there's an abundance of White athletic prowess. Corey Hertz, the reigning IL indoor 400-meter champ (10.78 in the 100, 21.61 in the 200), qualified with the second-fastest time in the state this year (47.59).

Carl Klamm (48.09) and Steven Strange (48.51) are also in the mix.

has anyone here ever heard of Lindsey Wilson College? i haven't. but that's where you end up if you're one of the fastest 200-meter runners in the country ... and you're a White kid.

Austin Hayes (South Laurel, KY) is the fastest 100-meter runner (10.76) and State Champion in Kentucky and also ran a sparkling 21.36 in the 200 (#41 in the USA). so which speed-coveting track power wants a skinny sprinter with obvious upside? (Hayes also played soccer and basketball.) apparently none of them ... unless, of course, Lindsey Wilson College is considered such a place.

consider that his time in the 200-meters is already faster than in-state schools University of Kentucky's (Xavier Jones 21.44) and University of Louisville's (Zachery Main 21.93) fastest 200-meter runner's personal bests. he's also ALREADY nearly a half-second faster in the 100-meters than Main was as a collegiate freshman, and Main is the fastest sprinter UL has.

of course, Jones and Main are black. Hayes, clearly, is not.

Hayes plans on pursuing a degree in criminal justice, so clearly his academics aren't the problem. one "wonders" what the real "reason" could be ...

you really can't make this stuff up.

Funny.....Florida and Florida State both have strong track programs, but somehow he's headed to the midwest.

the coaches at elite football schools and conferences always talk about size/speed combinations, and how they want big guys who can run fast ... right?

uh ... well, sort of.

meet Scott Patton (Woodbridge High, CA). the CIF-SS champion in the 100-meters (10.65 windy, 10.73 wind-legal) measures in at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds.

in addition to blazing speed, Patton was Mr. Everything for his high school football team's defense, whether it was at safety or linebacker. he finished his senior season with 126 tackles, 4 sacks, and 2 interceptions in 11 games. he totaled 130 tackles and 3 sacks as a junior. a three-year starter and three-year all-league performer, Patton, who was also a team captain, racked up enough awards to fill a trophy room.

can you guess what elite football-factory program snatched up this athletic specimen blessed with ideal size and speed and terrific football instincts?

if you guessed Yale, you'd be correct.

he wasn't offered a scholarship to any of the Division One schools around the country who probably came to mind.

Gabe Warner (Woodbridge High, CA) is one of the elite 400-meter sprinters in the country (47.31 is #29 nationally), and his personal-best of 21.34 last year in the 200-meters was #54 in the USA (his best this year was 21.17 windy, 21.64 wind-legal).

a teammate of the aforementioned Scott Patton (who won the CIF-SS 100-meters), Warner was the CIF-SS champion of both the 200 and the 400. he also won the 4x100 (with Patton) and the 4x400.

Warner's 400-meter best this year (47.31) would have qualified for the the recent PAC-12 Championships Final in the 400. his time in the deuce (21.64) would have narrowly missed the cut (although his 21.34 would have made it).

Warner recently committed to run track for an in-state school ... can you guess which program craved his services?

nope, it wasn't UCLA or USC. USC actually has a couple of sprinters who are slightly faster than he is, though one is a senior ... UCLA, well, they could use him. especially in the deuce. but they weren't interested.

it wasn't Cal, despite the fact that he'd be their fastest 400-meter the moment he walked onto campus (and #2 in the 200).

heck, Warner's time this year is more than a half-second faster than anyone at Fresno State in the deuce and over 2-and-a-half seconds faster (yes, you read that correctly!) than their swiftest 400-meter runner. but they didn't sign him.

give up?

it was Mt. San Antonio College. uh ... what?!?

yep. you can't make this stuff up. oh! and all those other sprinters i mentioned? they're significantly darker than Warner. i'm sure it's just a coincidence.

we've talked quite a bit about Sean McGrew (St. John Bosco, CA), who is now a junior. but there are two sophomores out in California whom Vanilla Sky first mentioned who are smoking the track and actually have faster personal-bests this season than he does.

remember, these times are for kids who are just sophomores in high school.

Zachary Shinnick (Damien, CA) is a CRAZY talented sprinter. this year he's run wind-legal nationally elite times in both the 200 (21.46, U.S. #60) and the 400 (47.49, U.S. #38). he's also run a windy 21.09. additionally, he's one of the top sprinters in California over 100-meters (10.70, CA #13), and has run a windy 10.55. it's very rare to have that sort of speed combination. he is a gem!

Cole Dubots (Vista Murrieta, CA) has a personal-best of 10.65 in the 100-meters (CA #9). he's run under 10.70 wind-legal 4 times this year as well as once more with a slight wind. he has true speed. he's also run 21.64 in the deuce (and 21.19 windy).

these two young guns are the fastest sophomores in CA.

the fastest kid in Oregon is a gangly 6-foot-1 junior who doesn't pass "the eye test," but his times on the track are beautiful.

Tyren Wolfe (North Medford, OR) is the Class 6A (big school) State Champion in the 100-meters and has the state's fastest time in a wind-legal 10.69. he was also barely edged out for the top spot and Championship in the 200 by one-hundredths of a second (that's .01 seconds for you math-challenged folks). his time of 21.89 was the state's #2 overall time.

his times are even more impressive when you consider that he broke his femur as a freshman when running the hurdles and couldn't run at all last year (as a sophomore). add in that basketball is his main/preferred sport (he helped lead his team to the 6A State Tourney this season), and his performance is even more astounding.

this kid oozes with upside, but will it ever be acknowledged by the so-called "experts?"

in other Oregon news, for the first time in state history, a single high school went 1-2-3 in the 100-meters.

led by Dannelle Woodc0ck (right) with a State Championship time of 12.01, Barlow's speedy trio of Woodc0ck, Macie Allen (12.32, left), and Sara Turner (12.14) took home all three medals. it was Woodc0ck's second individual 6A state title in the 100, and she also took home the 200-meter crown (25.08). Dannelle ends her high school career with 7 State Titles.

Turner is just a sophomore. Allen is a junior.

the trio would also team up to win the 4x100 with a sparkling 46.72 (U.S. #34), just .18 seconds off the all-time state record.

Shinnick ran great times at today's State Championships in CA - 47.19 for 3rd in the 400, then coming back with a 21.10 for second in the 200. Not bad for one of those slow White kids....no doubt Shinnick is well on his way to being a walk-on at one of the many fine junior colleges we have here in Southern CA - even if he drops down into the 45's in HS like Jeremy Wariner. Shinnik's already over a second faster as a soph than Wariner. It is amusing to see him run down so many black affletes who are as physically mature as adults.

Also, for all of you sprint lovers, Sean McGrew finished second in the Cal state championships, Daniel Stokes of Diamond Ranch (not to be confused with a sprinter of the same name who was from Maryland a couple of years ago) finished fifth, and Cole Dubots was sixth.

Stokes was also fourth in the 200. He's a junior.


Also, glancing down the Cal results, sophomore Erica Schroeder ran a smoking 2:07.08 to win the 800. Excellent for her age. Finishing second behind her was a FRESHMAN Rylee Penn, who is in her first year of running track. I just want to point out how insane that is. Jumping into the sprints without any background is one thing, jumping into middle distance is another thing altogether. She could be the next Mary Cain/Alexa Ephraimson (oh, and by the way, did anyone mention that Alexa broke Mary's US junior record in the 1500 a few weeks ago? Both she and Mary have run 10 seconds faster than the previous mark. They've run times that would have gotten them on the last Olympic team).

I'd love to see some of these races if anyone finds them online.

Abby Steiner

to piggy-back off trackster's comments regarding a talented frosh ...

Abby Steiner (Dublin Coffman, OH) ran a wind-legal 11.80 in the 100-meters (USA #47, OH #2) and a wind-legal 23.96 in the 200-meters (USA #33, OH #1) this year. during the indoor season, she added a 7.55 (US #22, OH #1) in the 60-meters and 24.80 (US #41, OH #1) in the deuce, winning the Ohio Division 1 State Championship in both events.

she is just a freshman!

at the Division 1 State Meet, she began what appears to be quite a legacy. She won the Ohio State Division 1 Championship in the 200-meters by over half a second (23.96), was narrowly edged by .04 and took second in the 100 (11.89, after running 11.80 in the semifinal) and anchored the Shamrocks' all-underclass 800 relay to a third place finish (1:39.28).

when you consider that she also plays soccer year round (from the middle of July to the end of June and doesn't take off during track season), the future is very bright for this superb young talent.

Just to follow-up on the above post - to have 3 white kids make it to the finals of the California HS 100 meter championship is amazing. The fact that they finished 2nd, 5th, and 6th is also amazing.
And to add to the amazement, they are all underclassmen. So hopefully, we will see them again next year in the finals.
Also wanted to add that Alexander Billing won the Boys high hurdles in a time of 13.68. That's the 13th fastest time in state history.
