Decided to start a new thread for Track and Field High Schoolers.
The previous ones are pretty old and long.

I'll start this one with news of a young sprinter/jumper from Maine, Kate Hall.
She dominated at the New England Interscholastic Indoor Championships, winning the 60m and LJ, and breaking the New England record for both in those events.

"....broke New England all-time best marks in the 55-meter dash (6.95 seconds) and the long jump (20-6) to the delight and amazement of fans at the Reggie Lewis Center. "

http://www.dyestat.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=44531&do=news&news_id=321196

Those marks make her #3 Nationally in the 55m dash, and #1 in the Long Jump!
Hopefully she is the next Jenna Prandini!

Hannah Brier of Wales set a new Under 20 (yrs old) Welsh record in the 60m with a time of 7.41.
The previous record was set almost 30 yrs ago.
The time might not sound that great for an Under 20 yr old, but Hannah is only 16 yrs old! Basically a sophomore or junior in high school.
And her time would make her the fastest sophomore or junior in the US, and tied for the 3rd fastest senior.
Pretty impressive!

Wow! Kate Hall of Maine won the Long Jump at national HS Indoor championships yesterday.
Her jump was an amazing 20ft 11-1/4 inches!
This is a new national championships record beating the old record by 4 inches.
Plus she is competing in the 60m at the championships today.
In the prelims she had the 3rd fastest time - 7.46.
Here's more:

Here is a follow-up article on Kate Hall
http://www.keepmecurrent.com/lakes_...cle_38a2f9ec-cda3-11e4-8706-23594505c436.html

As mentioned, she won the LJ at the indoor national championships.
She also set a PR in finishing 6th in the 60m dash - 7.46.
I saw the race on the internet; she didn't have a good start, but she held her speed very well.
I think bigger things are yet to come for her once the outdoor season gets going.

Hey!!! I got a hot new prospect in the 100m - Devin Quinn of Charlotte, Florida.
He ran the fastest time of all the high schoolers in the heats at the Florida Relays today - 10.67.
A little further research and I see he ran a 10.65 2 wks ago, and a 10.31 last week!
I don't know what the wind was for any of those races, but either way he is very fast.
It's nice to have a fast white kid coming out of Florida. It looks like he is going to have a great season!

Here's an interview with him

Devin Quinn won the finals of the 100m at the Florida Relays running 10.76 into a -2.4 wind.
He beat some of the best HS sprinters in Florida. Congratulations to him!

And one more!!!
Ian Mack of Nevada.
He's already run 10.46 (1.1w) this season. WoW!
Along with Devin Quinn, who I just mentioned, that's 2 white kids in the Top 10 in the country for boys 100m.
Could be a great season!

Here's a video of one of his races:
http://www.runnerspace.com/video.php?video_id=137260

Ian Mack won the 100m at the Arcadia Invitational, running 10.44 with 1.0w.
He could be this year's version of Curtis Godin!

His name reminds me of the old scottish sprinter. I think his name was Ian Mackie.

Very good time and wind legal. Hope he can get into the 10.30's later this spring. Good find jacknyc.

Yes, Ian Mackie of Scotland. I had thought the same thing.
Mack's 10.44 makes him the 2nd fastest wind legal, 100m HS sprinter in the country so far this year!
Here is the race:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y6VJuAVghY

He looks skinny and small, which means there's lots of room to mature and grow and get better!

Arcadia was filled with white talent this year..

The 110s were won by senior Chad Zallow in a stunning 13.50.

the 400 is my favorite race, and there are a few names who have already posted impressive times in the early season.

Corey Reid (Carson, NV) ran the nation's #7 time last week with a 47.37, also at Arcadia.

also last week, Jacob Harper (Klein Oak, TX) ran a 47.76.

Zachary Shinnick (Damien, CA) has a 47.91 to his credit already this year, good for #25 in the country ... and he's just a sophomore!

he has a 10.70 in the 100 and a 21.67 (#28 in the country) in the deuce this year, as well. he's a super skinny kid, who barely looks to have hit puberty. additionally, he has a younger sister who is also very fast.

********************

on the girls' side, the fastest White athlete in the season's early going is Chelsea Zoller (Holy Innocents, GA). Zoller, who won the State Championship last year as a sophomore, has run 54.87 this year, already an improvement on last year's season-best. that's good for #12 in the country.

Zachary Shinnick and Cole Dubots are also top 10 in the 100m in California. They are the two fastest sophomore 100m sprinters in California.

Corey Reid is a decathlete so his 400m is even more impressive - he has 9 other events to train for.

it's been a crazy spring in Arkansas, as the weather has been extremely dampening to track performances. literally. it's rained like mad, and track meets all over the state have had to cancel or re-schedule.

that being said, there have been a few chances for athletes to get out and run.

currently the two fastest confirmed 100-meter boys in the state are White kids:

Adler Goode of Shiloh Christian ran a 10.80 at the Pioneer Relays on April 16, setting a track record. he also ran a 10.89 five days earlier at the Johm McDonnell Invitational. the 6-foot-2 wide receiver/sprinter has gained 30 pounds as a senior and will be walking on to the University of Central Arkansas. he's just another example of a White athlete maturing at a later age than the more heavily recruited blacks. he will likely be the fastest kid on the team ... despite being a walk-on.

the appropriately named John Winn of Bryant might be the best overall sprinter in the state. he has a 10.83 in the 100 (#2 overall), a 22.38 in the 200 (#2), and a 49.19 in the 400 (#1 in the state).

Zach Jewell of Mena has the top official time in the state over 200-meters, running it in 22.27. he's a junior.

the top high jumper in the state is Rivers Ridout of Searcy. he's cleared 6-foot 10-inches this year. he's only 6-foot-3. he'll be attending Duke on a track scholarship.

on the girls' side of things, there is only one White gal among the state's best short sprinters ... but she's just a sophomore! Hannah Lueders of Rogers has the #4 official time in both the 100 (12.45) and the 200 (25.66).

in the ladies' 400, senior Amanda Dillon of Springdale Har-Ber is coming off a knee injury and has run only one time this spring, but she still ran a 56.37. that's over a full second faster than the state #2 and over two full seconds faster than the state's #3. wow! she may be even better in the 800, where she also has the state's top time (2:13.25) and her separation from the competition is even wider. she will be running track at Baylor University.

Dillon has a younger sister (freshman) who is also very fast.

Ian Mack and Zachary Shinnick both ran at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays today. Slightly illegal wind unfortunately. Mack finished second at 10.42. Shinnick was 5th at 10.55.

This Shinnick is really impressive. I checked out some videos of his races and he generally has a ten meter lead before passing the 50 meter mark. Very good at the 400 and 100. No idea what his best event will be. Too young to tell, but he's already good enough to compete at the college level, and he's just a hs sophomore.

Jaron Brooks of Henry Clay High in Kentucky didn't start high jumping until the spring of his sophomore season ... about this time last year. before this spring, he had cleared only 6-feet-4 in competition.

he is now the nation's top high jumper.

Brooks won the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City with a leap of 6-feet 11&1/2-inches. he followed that up by setting a new Kentucky state indoor record with a leap of 7-feet 1-inch.

he has yet to compete outdoors this spring due to battling a right lower leg injury, but it would seem the sky is the limit for this youngster. literally.

here is a nice profile piece on him: Brooks eager to get healthy

a youngster to continue following is from nearby (to me) Oklahoma ... we mentioned him last year, but he's finally shown up on the track this spring.

Kolby Mendenhall, now a sophomore at Perry High (OK), was a two-time state champion last year as a high school freshman, winning both the 100 and the 200 in Class 3A. he then went on to win both events at the Meet of Champs against the best sprinters the state had to offer.

this year, he has the state's top wind-legal time in the 100 (10.89), and he recently ran a 10.55 and a 10.74 but with no wind indicated. he has a 21.88 and a 22.12 in the deuce over the last couple of weeks, also with no wind indicated.

Mendenhall is also a standout tailback for the Perry High football team. he had one game this fall where he ran for 293 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 16 carries. three of the touchdowns were from 69 yards or more.

with Shinnick (CA) and Mendenhall (OK), two of the nation's top sprinters are just sophomores.

Rule of thumb

I think it is great to see sprinters like Mendenhall and Shinnick flash amazing speed and Brooks display high flying ability. But in most cases I want Track and Field to be their secondary sport. Unless these guys break through on the national scene and beyond ala World Track and the Olympics I would rather see them flash their athleticism in more mainstream sports. For the sprinters I would love to see them rise to the top in either football or baseball and for Brooks basketball. Otherwise they will remain pretty much unknown to the general population. We need white sprinters to start making noise in the big time sports like baseball and football!!

I agree, but the problem is that promising Whites are for the most part kept from being able to break through in "mainstream" sports. I don't have to go into what goes on in HS in much of the country, never mind what goes on literally everywhere when it comes to college recruiting- no matter the sport - and Whites being ignored or discouraged when it comes to certain positions - no matter the sport. Then the funnel is narrowed when it comes to the next level for football, basketball.... you'd think there were orders from on high...

Here's a recruiting article where Mathews talks about how he wants to attend college for track and also get an education. It's refreshing to see athletes not get sucked into the football pipeline where he would probably sit on a depth chart somewhere. He seems interested in the decathlon but maybe he could get his 100/200 times down and specialize in the short sprints.

Agreed also. I really enjoy seeing white high school athletes excel in all sports, especially football and track and field. Keep them coming, all who contribute to these threads.

With that being said, JR is correct in that it's extremely difficult for white athletes to get D-1 scholarships no matter what they do. Being a parent that has went through the whole recruiting process, I know first hand. White HS RB's are told by coaches they won't be recruited because they are white. How can you fight that?

However, we can't give up. I encourage anyone here who has any aspirations of raising their children and exposing them to athletics, to do so. Do so with more emphasis on academics. If they're good enough and intelligent enough, they will get to the next level, expenses paid.

Oliver Bromby of England ran 10.46.
He just turned 17 last month.
There are several up and coming young sprinters in Britain.

Ian Mack ran 10.31w (2.4w) at the Neveda Regional Trials.
I want to see what he will do at the state finals with hopefully, a legal wind.

Another very fast HSer from Britain is 17 yr old Charlotte McClennaghan. She just ran a new PB of 23.09 in the 200m. That's the 5th fastest under-20 yrs of age, time in British history. Remember, she is just 17yrs old. That time would also be the 15th fastest collegiate 200m in the US this year, if she was in college!
Her best 100m time is 11.66.
