Curtis Godin has officially committed to UCLA.
Here's a press blurb about it. Notice the high praise from UCLA coach about Curtis' talent:
Godin attends Mater Dei in Santa Ana, Calif., and is currently the top 100m and 200m runner in the state of California and has the third best times in the country in both events. Godin is coming off an impressive weekend where he won the 100m (10.36) and placed second in the 200m (21.03) with two personal bests at the Arcadia Invitational. Godin has run 10.50 or better in the 100m five times this season and has yet to lose in the event. Godin is relatively new to the sport of track as he played baseball until his junior season.
“We are very excited about Curtis,â€￾ Maynard said. “He is relatively a beginner in this sport, yet he has burst on to the sprints scene nationally. It’s extremely rare, and indicative of a great talent, for an athlete to improve this dramatically in one year. The kid has incredible upside and potential. He reminds me of Gemeli in that he is so talented with so little experience. Godin is born to run. Here is an interview with Curtis after he tied the meet record running an eye popping wind legal 10.36 in the 100 meters!

Cole Henderson (Pekin, Illinois), the fastest White high school sprinter in the USA last year that i know of, ran a 10.55 100-meters and a 21.82 in the deuce in his opening outdoor meet of the year to win both events.

Cole's time in the 100 is only .04 off his personal-best time from a year ago, and his 200-meter time is only .32 seconds off his personal-best in that event. he is now a senior in high school and has committed to run track for the University of Illinois. sadly, not a single Division One program recruited the 6-foot-1 speedster (and standout wide receiver on his high school football team) to play football.

in the same meet, promising junior Brett Charlton (Eureka, Illinois) took second place in both races with times of 10.73 and 21.90.

Payton Stumbaugh, a senior at Springdale Har-Ber, is currently the Arkansas #1 in the 100-meters (US #35), the 200-meters (US #25), the 100-hurdles (US #23), and the 300-hurdles (US #29), whilst coming in at Arkansas #4 in the high jump.

Amanda Dillon, a junior, is currently the Arkansas #1 in the 400-meters (US #36), Arkansas #2 in the 200-meters, Arkansas #3 in the 800-meters (US #23), and Arkansas #5 in the 100-meters.

not too bad for a couple of pretty White girls who are probably top notch in the classroom, as well.

Sain-Thomas Mathew, a senior, was possibly the top overall sprinter in the state a year ago. after showcasing the best season for a tailback in school history this fall (in his first year as a starter), he is once again the top 400-meter runner in the state, having already bested his (and the state's) top time from a year ago, running a new personal-best of 48.22. he also has a 22.31 in the 200-meter to his credit this year.

just across the border in Oklahoma, junior Skyler Oren (Sallisaw High) has posted a 22.01 in the deuce. a versatile athlete, he has also jumped over 23-feet in the long jump already this year.

good news from today's OC Championship meet.

The (California) state track and field championships are a little more than a month away, and Curtis Godin of Santa Ana Mater Dei keeps turning in top performances no matter where he is running.

At the Orange County championships on Saturday at Mission Viejo, the UCLA-bound Godin set meet records in winning the 100 in 10.53 seconds and the 200 in 21.09.

actually, Godin's time in the 100 tied the wind-legal meet record set by Matt Bruno, but his time in the 200 shattered the old meet record by nearly half a second (21.47).

while off his personal-bests of the season, it is nice to see him continue to dominate the competition every time he lines up. additionally, he clearly has a lot of upside, as his technique is far from a finished product (as seen in the photo below). the best is still to come from this talented youngster who is just in his second year of running track.

Parsons, from Lake Dallas High (TX), is just a sophomore, and he has already qualified for the Texas 4A regionals in the 100-meters twice.

Curtis Godin ran a 10.40 and a 21.19 in the Trinity League Championships prelims on Friday. he'll run again on Friday.

in my home state of Arkansas, Payton Stumabaugh (Springdale Har-Ber) continues to completely dominate the girls' sprints. in the 7A (biggest classification in the state) West Conference Championship meet, Stumbaugh took first in the 100-meters (12.11), the 200-meters (24.49 meet record), the 100-hurdles (14.25 meet record, breaking her own previous meet record), and the 300-hurdles (43.56 meet record). she also took second in the high jump and the long jump.

Stumbaugh currently holds the #1 mark in the state in the 100 (11.89), the 200 (24.20), the 100-hurdles (13.91; the first-ever girl in the state to go under 14 seconds), and the 300-hurdles (43.14; she's nearly 3 full seconds faster than anyone else in the state in this event). she is also #4 in the state in the high jump (5-feet-6).

her teammate, Amanda Dillon, a junior, is #4 in the state in the 100 (12.20), #3 in the 200 (24.87), #1 in the 400 (55.55; over a full second faster than #2), and #2 in the 800 (2:12.19).

on the boys' side for Har-Ber, Sain-Thomas Mathew continues to reign as the state's best 400-meter runner (48.22; nearly a second and a half faster than his closest competitor). he's not too shabby in the deuce, either (22.25). at the 7A West Conference Championships, Mathew took second in the 200 (22.35), #1 in the 400 (49.57), #2 in the 110-hurdles (15.58), and #1 in the high jump (6-0).

another local product, Brandon Workman of Rogers High (like Mathew, a standout on the football field who is not being recruited to play football) set a meet record in the triple jump with a mark of 49-3.25. that would've set the all-time record, but the Arkansas Activities Association only recognizes overall state marks from state championship meets and the Meet of Champs. Workman also took home the top prize in the long jump (22-9.5).

finally, in the 6A South Conference Championships, Parker Baldwin (Siloam Springs) was the only White kid to make the final in the 200-meters … and he won it. i don't have his time in front of me at the moment, however.

I need to follow-up on some of athletes mentioned from the Arcadia meet, but I did see that Cam Dopp set an all-time Utah best in the 300m Hurdles - 36.30.
Trevor Leavitt also set an all-time Utah best in the 400m - 47.00.

a cool story out of Iowa …

speaking of Iowa, perhaps the most versatile sprinter in the state was (no surprise) also an All-State football player. but get this! he was a punter.

Derek Harksen (Camanche) is the fastest Class 2A sprinter (and one of the elite in the state) in the 100-meters (10.88), 200-meters (22.14), and the 400-meters (49.88).

Iowa also boasts one of the nation's top high school high jumpers.

just a junior, Jeff Giannettino (West Burlington) joined the 7-foot club at the Drake Relays. it was his second consecutive year to win the event. he is currently tied for the #5 mark in the nation.

as an aside, Blaine Listach (Meyer High, TX) has the top White high jump for the season thus far at 7-foot-1, and he has jumped 7-feet or higher four times this year. his top mark is good for #2 in the nation. he is also a junior.

yes, sir. they do. and also as i've said before, Har-Ber also is the home of the fastest boys 400-meter runner in the state, Sain-Thomas Mathew. Mathew won the 400 and once again lowered his state-best mark, this time posting a 48.22 (and beating his closest competition by nearly a full second). he was also a finalist in the 200.

Stumabaugh is simply a phenom. she holds the top overall state marks in 4 sprint events as well as being elite in two jumping events. she is so good that she overshadows her junior teammate Dillon who is an elite talent in her own right.

in other Arkansas news, Brandon Workman once again re-set his Arkansas-best marks in both the long jump and the triple jump. he leapt 23-feet 5-inches in the long jump (US #17) and exploded for 48-feet 7-inches in the triple jump (US #8). he was also a finalist in the 100-meters. just imagine what he could do if this unrecruited defensive back had some athleticism ...

and to be clear, they were all competing at the Arkansas Class 7A State Championship Meet. these outstanding athletes will be competing against the overall best of the best at the Meet of Champs one week from today.

in the Class 6A State Championships, Parker Baldwin (Siloam Springs) won the 200-meters (22.60). he was the only White sprinter in the Final.

Curtis Godin continues to dominate in the short sprints on the Left Coast. he won the Trinity League Finals in the 100- (10.49) and the 200- (21.29). Sean McGrew took second in the 100- (10.75), while Godin was over a half-second faster than second place in the deuce.

Godin hasn't been challenged in either event since he ran at the Arcadia Invitational back in early April.

i don't recall ever seeing the name Steven Jazdyk on the forums, which is a shame because he is a talented kid.

Jazdyk, who owns a personal-best 10.68 in the 100-meters this year (#41 in the country), will be running track for the University of Oklahoma. but not as a sprinter … no, he committed to be a decathlete.

a quick follow-up to my earlier post on the Arkansas 7A State Championship Meet …

Payton Stumbaugh, in addition to earning the girls high-point honors with 56 points (4 first-place finishes and 2 ties for second-place), broke the meet and overall state record in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.92. she also broke a meet record in the 100-meters that had stood for 30 years with her time of 11.93.

the oft-overshadowed member of Springdale Har-Ber's talented feminine sprint duo, Amanda Dillon also broke a meet record that had stood for 30 years with her time of 55.75 in the 400-meters. (she took second in the 200 and fourth in the 100, as well.)

Brandon Workman's triple jump was also a record-setter. his leap of 48-feet 7-inches set the meet and overall state record. he won the event by nearly 4 feet and broke the old overall record by 7 inches.

Robert Grant has been mentioned a few times already this year. He has been the leading 300m HS hurdler for most of the year, and a top 200m guy. This weekend he won both events at the Arizona state meet. His ran 36.33 in the hurdles which is the 3rd fastest in the country behind his own 36.24 and Cam Dopp's 36.30.
Interestingly, Grant is at the same high school that hurdle sensation Devon Allen attended last year.

just a few days ago Brandon Bray (China Spring, TX) set the new US Junior National Record in the pole vault with a height of 17-feet 8.5-inches at the Texas State Meet. it is the best-ever mark by a 16-year-old, and it is obviously the new #1 mark in the country, surpassing his already-#1 mark of 17-feet 6-inches from earlier this year. as an aside, his father was also a superb pole vaulter (a two-time state champion in high school and all-conference at Florida State).

Another HS pole vaulter to look out for is Devin King a pole vaulter from Jewel Sumner in rural Louisiana. He was consistently the nation's number one jumper and had his eyes on the national record until Bray come around. Another jumper I have had the pleasure of seeing is Californian Carl Johansson, who will be attending Texas A&M in the fall.

i attended the Arkansas Meet of Champs on Saturday. for those who don't recall me writing of it before, the Meet of Champs invites the State Champions from all 7 classifications in the state (1A is smallest while 7A features the biggest schools) along with the top 2 or 3 (i'm unclear) remaining overall marks to compete head-to-head. it's a very cool meet.

this year, despite the cold (temps in the low 50s) and rain, Payton Stumbaugh placed her name all over the record books (the Arkansas Activities Association only recognizes wind-legal times at State Championship meets and the Meet of Champs for their records). she now has the fastest times in Arkansas HISTORY in the 200 meters, the 100 hurdles, and the 300 hurdles. she is also near the fastest-ever mark in the 100-meters.

she was clearly THE best athlete in the entire field of competitors. no one else even compared, which is saying something considering the level of talent present.

several White athletes also shined, including but not limited to:

Payton Stumbaugh won the 100-meters (12.04), the 200-meters (24.49, an all-time record), and the 100-hurdles (14.04, an all-time record). she didn't run in the 300 hurdles in order to run the 4x400 relay.

Amanda Dillon won the 400-meters by nearly a second-and-a-half (56.27).

Dillon and Stumbaugh teamed up to win the 4x400 relay by nearly 3 seconds.

twin sisters Lexi and Tori Weeks placed first and second in the pole vault. they currently hold the #3 and #9 marks in the US, respectively. they are just juniors.

with Sain-Thomas Mathew absent, junior John Winn cruised to the title in the boys 400-meters.

Tres Rowland won a tight race in the 300-hurdles in 39.31.

Brandon Workman was injured while leaping, but he still won the triple jump, though he wasn't able to participate in the long jump or the 100-meters.

10.34 for Godin today in the southern sectional finals. Wind was 2.2.
200m tomorrow I believe.
This kid is very consistent in the 10.3s. I hope he can get a wind legal 10.2x in the state championships, which I hope/expect him to win.
