Well, she's young, but Hannah Cunliffe is the fastest sprinter in the world in her age group. Absolutely amazing. Two links on the 14-yr-old phenom. The first is a YouTube compilation. So for all of you who think she is overrated, she has won a national championship in the sprints 6 times and she just finished 8th grade. She has been the best sprinter in the U.S. since whe wasa little girl. We need to follow her career closely. Hannah wants to be the fastest women in the world and win an olympic gold medal. I've rarely seen an unattractive Hannah, and this is no exception! She has confidence and style.

In the latter part of the youtube vid, there's literally an army of coal-blacks (not only the racers' but the folk in the background as well)..

That is why they tend to dominate the sprints more. The majority of blacks get their kids into track from a very young age. This helps them to work on the speed, coordination and jumping. Whites just don't go out for these events in the same numbers. When whites do they usually tend to go for the field or distance eventsa long with jumping and pole vault. It's amazing that for the handful of whites that do go into the sprints(very intimidating), alot of them hold their own. Who knows how many whites could be excellent sprinters. Like I've said a million times, unless whites ever fall in love with athletics from an early age, you won't se much change but that doesn't mean that they can't compete. Whites can be great sprinters but we just don't have a high enough participation rate to ever make much noise. Haley could help change things if she can make the olympics someday. Maybe young white girls in the US will want to follow in her footsteps.

Like her dad said in the Seattle newspaper video; if she keeps progressing at a normal pace, she's got a good shot at the Olympics.

What country was that filmed in? Is that what a track meet looks like in the USA now?
She was the only white competitor I saw in the whole video - not just competing but all the ones milling around in the background.
I think I could find a track meet from Zimbabwe or Namibia and probably see more white youngsters competing. Why aren't the white kids taking part? Was this filmed in a particularly black city?
I know track and field is very popular with black youngsters but even so total absence of white kids was very noticeable as Deadlift also pointed out.
This lack of participation at an early age is part of the problem with the lack of diversity in many sports at the professional level. Any parents out there need to encourage their kids to get involved and have a go.

She is from Washington. Seattle Speed did the video. Who would think that from the northwest. Whites need to get more involved in athletics. It does wonders for any sport that you may choose later on. Alot of whites would also be suprised to find that they fall in love with the sport like I have.

what a talent she is. I can imagine the mostly all black crowd shaking their heads in disbelief when she won that 200 on her own.
Very glad to see she can run a g00d 200 too. Means she's unlikely to tie up in the 100 from fatigue and her confident single mindedness probably counts for the same if the race is tight.



I really hope she goes on with it. The family seems genetically gifted (her 10 year old bro long jumped just over my best age 50
distance, how mortifying!)

Australia's fastest ever 14 year old was a girl named Debbie Wells from regional NSW in the 1970's. She ran 11.3 handtimed and was selected for the Com Games but faded off the scene by the time she was 16 or 17. Just lost interest.

Turns out Hannah ran the 60 in the big UW invitational last week. This invitational brought in the best track programs from the West, including mighty Oregon, but 14 yr old Hannah not only one her heat but finished third in the final (against the cream of the crop from 11 heats). This just blows my mind. Hannah is beating college girls like it's just a run in the park. To do this as a teenager who hasn't even started high school yet is amazing! Unfricking believable. WOW is she a talent. I hope she never loses her passion to run. The hardest part for her father/coach will be keeping the boys away from her. She is so beautiful. Keep it up Hannah!

watching her run gets me totally pumped! at the same time, it leaves me so incredibly saddened ... where are all the other White kids who could be running? or jumping high? looking at the complete dearth of other White competitors at her meets says all that needs to be said about the future of White athletic participation.

I am glad some folks are beginning to notice. White Lightning and I have been saying this for years on this board. I have been attending AAU/TAC youth track meets since the early 1980's and it has been this way since then.

Hannah is running today against the college girls at the UW Flotrack meet. I can't recall who else is there (a lot of teams have gone to the Tyson meet instead), but if any of you guys are at home with nothing to do, Flotrack will be broadcasting the entire event. There is supposed to be a really good distance field.

Hannah was the fastest qualifier in the heats, with a time of 7.51.
But she ran slower in the final, tying for 4th place.
Since she's just 15yrs old, she doesn't have the strength of the older girls,so that probably hurt her in the finals.
Her 7.51 would have gotten 2nd in the finals. Unbelievable for a 15yr old!

Damn this girl can run. What a nice time. I would like to see her get her times down alot over the next couple of years. Jodie Williams of England ran a 7.24 today to win the UK womens 60 trials and she is 17. That is the fastest time ever posted by a 17 year old. She is of mixed race. So that would be a great sprinter to look up to and try to equal or surpass her world record for her age group. Hannah has two years to get her times down a little over two tenths. Like others, I too have viewed this site for a while and have to start posting when possible. After seeing the Hannah Cunliffe link, I wanted to say, I have seen her live. At the 2009 AAU Junior Olympics, she was very impressive although, she placed 2nd in the 100meters, I believe she won the 200m, It was nice to see her comeback in 2010 AAU Junior Olympicstowin both the 100m and 200m. I understand the posts about not seeing many whitesin the sprints and wanted to comment about the low number of white sprinters and their ability to compete. ( which I would like to do at a later time),However, she's not the only white sprinter making noise at The Junior Olympics. There's a young man, Zac Pollard,who ran just behind her at The 2009 AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa. After only being involved in track for 1 year,Zac made it all the way to the finals of the 100 meters, where he placed 6th in the country,sustained aback injury while in the long jump, or would have made it to the finals in the 200 meters.If your asking what happened in 2010? He ran and won the N.C. AAU 14u 100m 11.6(13 years old), 2nd in the 200m, and qualified forThe 2010 Junior Olympics, but chose to start his high school football career, where he is a halfback and SS.The AAU Junior Olympics start 1st week of August.All this while, I believe plays travel baseball and wrestles. I believe while seeinghim live, if he were to commit, and with a couple more years training could be someone to watch in track and field and football.He has the size(5'11, 180lbs., strength, 32 reps 135lbs.and speed 4.65, 40, 4.23 shuttle 14yrs. old)Here's the link to his 100 meter performance at The 2009 AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa. Thank you CarolinaSpeed and welcome to the board. Please post as often as you like. We appreciate the info on Zac. I hope someone encourages him to continue track. Christophe Lemaitre didn't take up track until he was 15 and look as what he has done. Zac was probably just born with alot of natural talent and he should build on that with proper training. Please keep us informed on Zac, Hannah or any other young sprinters to keep an eye on.

Hannah lead all 60m qualifiers yesterday at the Simplot Games with a time of 7.62
Mary Beth Sant was the 3rd leading qualifier with a time of 7.68.

The Simplot Games are an annual HS indoor meet for top HSers out west.
Hannah is a freshman and Mary Beth is a sophomore, so very impressive stuff!

Here is the finals results for the girls 60 meters. I was shocked to see Hannah get beat by a few hundreths but she ran good. Mary Beth was outstanding as well. These times are unbelievable for girls this young! The future looks bright for both of these sprinters. They are outstanding!
