The Death of Killah-P and the Murder of Golden Dawn

The above lyrics are by the posthumously famous Greek rapper Killah-P, known in the non-rap world as Pavlos Fyssas. The musician, who was a supporter of violent antifa groups, was stabbed to death a few days ago in an incident that is still under police investigation. Since then his songs have became postmortem hits, showing us clearly what his views were. But despite this, his death has become the wheel on which the establishment is attempting to break Golden Dawn.
What happened after Fyssas's death was not unexpected. Indeed, everything pointed that way. The system had its plan ready. All it needed was a crime around which the concerted forces of the media, the anarchists, the parliamentary and extra-parliamentary Left, and, of course, the government and the police could come together to criminalize nationalism.
The Media Crackdown
That fact that the investigation is still underway didn't stop the media from instantly putting a "bounty" on every person affiliated with Golden Dawn and accusing the party of being a criminal organization, similar to the mafia. The media's mouthpieces stirred up civil war passions with pure emotionalism and called down anathemas against Golden Dawn's members, all in pursuit of the establishment's political goal. On Sunday the paper with the highest circulation had a photo of the victim dying on its cover. That caused quite an uproar, due to its non-informative nature.
Some Leftist journalists seem to have been actually delighted with the death of the young rapper because they think that it entails the destruction of Golden Dawn. A common sense examination of the situation would not necessarily support this view, but it can and it has resulted in an outpouring of emotion, and this, as predicted, has ended up creating even more violence.
For the past two years, being a nationalist or a even a "racist" in Greece has been mainstream. Walking into a party or social gathering and proudly declaring yourself one was not frowned upon. Indeed, you were likely to be met by others voicing similar views. However, following the media frenzy of the last few days, this kind of attitude has lost some of its strength. The media stigmatization of Golden Dawn has caused some self-censorship among the part of the population that voted for it.
The Police Crackdown
Right now the police are on a Golden Dawn hunt, breaking into offices, searching people's homes and even – according to some – checking anyone on the streets with a distinct "nationalist look." This witch-hunt is just starting. Every Golden Dawn regional office has been the target of police searches. Many prominent members have had their homes raided as well, not MPs but mostly regional organisers, especially those in the areas near the site of the stabbing of Fyssas.
In one case, Sotiris Develekos, the 26 year old "youth front" organiser, had his parent's house raided. Although he lives with his girlfriend, and this house was raided as well without result, the police managed to find three knives at his parent's house, two of them kitchen knives. If Golden Dawn is pronounced a criminal organization, he faces up to 2.5 years in prison without parole. The same is the case for almost every Golden Dawn member. If they are considered to be members of a criminal organisation, each small-time offence can land them in prison for several years.
The total collaboration between the police and the judiciary system is impressive, and any "dissenters" within the police force have quickly been ousted. On Tuesday nine of the highest officers in the Greek police force were removed from their posts with two of them actually resigning. That can mean only one thing: any police officer who does't showcase his zeal for "antifascism" will probably lose his job, and might even land in court as well.
The Financial Crackdown
The financial police are also attempting to check – for the second time – Golden Dawn's accounts. One of the reasons the country is so corrupt is because its financial laws are multiple and complex, making it impossible to avoid breaking one. This also means that the authorities have a good chance of finding something they can use against political organisations when they have a mind to.
This and the fact that the government will probably cut it off from government grants (every party getting 1.5% or more of the vote qualifies) will create financial distress for Golden Dawn. Some journalists are even talking about a government plan to demand back all the money so far given to Golden Dawn, which would effectively bankrupt it as it has already spent most of it. It should be noted here that Golden Dawn is the only parliamentary party without bank loans.
The Antifascist Crackdown
On Tuesday in the center of Athens the owner of a pet store was brutally beaten by a mob of antifascists. He was also pierced with a used needle, which may or may not be infected with something. He actually had no connection with Golden Dawn, nor was he a nationalist. He just happened to be muscular and have a shaven head.
This is just one of many similar incidents. Dozens of people have been attacked in plain sight, in the middle of the day, by anti-fascist mobs, who feel righteous in “hunting down†nationalists. In another case, an off duty policeman was attacked in the metro station, during an antifascist rally. He ran for his life and when cornered fired twice in the air. The result? No antifascist was arrested. The policeman was, though, and he is now being prosecuted.
The same thing happened to members of Golden Dawn guarding their offices in Halkida. About 10 Golden Dawn regional offices have been attacked multiple times in the last few days with Molotov ****tails. By arresting the defenders the police make it certain that Golden Dawn members cannot fight back. You either get physically abused or arrested if you choose to participate in the party's activities. An MP's store was also destroyed. The list goes on, but I think everyone gets the point. This is the culmination of the two-pronged attack of the System against Golden Dawn. Will Golden Dawn Survive?
The political establishment is split. Half of it wants to ban/outlaw Golden Dawn, while the other half wants to "destroy" it using every means at its disposal.
For the first few days after the murder the general opinion was very tense, but it is now beginning to slip. People are starting to understand the double standards being used, and many are doubting the way the media has portrayed the incident.
According to some polls, Golden Dawn has lost some of its voters, but not a large number of them. It still polls high enough to cause a problem for the governing "conservative" party. But the polling prowess of Golden Dawn is not what matters now. More important is whether or not Golden Dawn will be able to walk through the minefield that the government and the left has set up?
The movement's dynamics were totally based on two things: first its activism and second its defiance of the way politics should be handled. It carved its own path (with the help of certain “beltway†media). But continuing on such a path at this time is dangerous for its very physical existence. To survive, Golden Dawn, it seems, will need to quickly master some new tricks.
