Filip Hrgovic is a talented heavyweight with a very good amateur background. He stays in shape and is fast for his size. He won a bronze medal, and should have won a silver or gold because he was robbed in the semi-finals against Tony Yoka.

He will face Tom Little (10-4) on January 27:

I hope they don't waste his year fighting tomato cans. He's so talented he doesn't need to fight soft opposition even in his early fights, he should start fighting some durable journeymen.

Hrgovic (now 3-0, 3 KOs) will be fighting Ireland’s Sean Turner (12-1, 8 KOs) today in a scheduled 8-round fight in Germany.

Turner is the BoxRec #1 heavyweight from Ireland and rated #48 in the world. He's never been stopped, and should last awhile and give Hrgovic a few rounds of pro experience.

Hrgovic will be fighting Mexican Filiberto Tovar this Saturday in Germany. Tovar is 9-0, but hasn't fought outside of Mexico and his opposition has been mediocre at best I'd imagine. Hrgovic should walk through this guy pretty quick. I like that he is getting some fights under his belt and is at least fighting guys with winning records.

Hrgovic won today by TKO and is now 5-0. I'll try to find a video later.

Mansour is an older, but durable fighter who has fought a few names. This will be a good test for Hrgovic. He is only 26 and is 5-0 as a pro. I like the aggressive step up and hopefully he puts away Mansour.

Signing to fight Mansour shows that his management team has total confidence in their prospect as Mansour has some quality wins on his boxing resume and a few razor thin losses against top 25ish type guys.

Of course 40+ heavyweights can fall off a cliff skills wise at any moment but you can't bank on that.

PS. Mansour who is roughly the same age as Briggs and he has fought ESPN level fighters for much shorter purses than what Briggs would demand to face the same opponents. He's Briggs with a set of balls.

Hrgovic is big and strong. His punches are powerful, but not very crisp. He paws and pushes. I hope he can work with someone who will help develop more snap. He also keeps his left hand too low. Vitali Klitichko could get away with that, but hey, he was Vitali Klitschko.

from east side boxing

Last night in his native Croatia, unbeaten red-hot heavyweight prospect/contender Filip Hrgovic pounded out a wide eight-round unanimous decision over ultra-durable and ultra-experienced veteran Kevin Johnson. It was one-way traffic pretty much all the way, as was indicated by the scores of the three judges – all three officials having the fight scored the same at 80-71, for Hrgovic.

The 26 year old former amateur standout who won, amongst other things, an Olympic bronze medal at the 2016 games, is now 7-0(5). 39 year old Johnson of New Jersey falls to 33-12-1(17).

Hrgovic, boxing his fifth fight of the year last night, dominated from the off, jabbing and unloading his powerful right hand. Johnson, though, is a master at rolling with a punch, and when a shot does get through, he has a good chin indeed. This blend of defensive prowess and a solid beard has allowed “KingPin” to earn a good living as a high-class journeyman. Hrgovic perhaps hit Johnson with more clean shots than anyone else this side of Anthony Joshua has ever managed, but still the older man hung tough.

Johnson may not make for an exciting fight, but any young pro could learn a lot from watching him, or from fighting him. Hrgovic wanted a stoppage win, yet he realised he had to be patient, that the ending blow would not come. Last night’s fight marked the second time in his 15-month pro career that Hrgovic has been taken the distance; Sean Turner managing it back in February of this year. Aside from that it has been all stoppage wins for the reigning WBC international heavyweight champ, his last win, an impressive stoppage over Amir Mansour, really impressing fans and experts.

In the opinion of some, Hrgovic is the most talented young up and coming heavyweight on the scene right now. The fact that he was unable to KO Johnson doesn’t change this at all. Johnson has now gone the distance with: Vitali Klitschko, Tyson Fury, Daniel Dubois, Andy Ruiz, Dereck Chisora and Manuel Charr.

Hrgovic destroyed one Gregory Corbin in the first minute of the first round last night. Time to step up to better competition.

Filip Hrgovic (10-0, 8 KOs) manhandled and stopped 37-year-old two-time former world title challenger Eric Molina (27-6, 19 KOs). 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Hrgovic floored Molina in round two with a body shot and put him down for the count with a right to the head in round three. Time was 2:03.
