i really wanted to create a thread about this because when i mentionned that a lot of players had realtives who are also professional players, everybody answered like it was normal
so here is a list of some non-white french players or non-white players that played in france who have relatives who are also professional players:

most of these players play currently as i didn't watch soccer until the 2000's (too young)

This looks like a case of signing him only because he is Eden's brother. He only has played 11 games in the 2nd division in France, which I assume isn't as good as the Championship in England. He's 19. It's not like he is 16 or 17.

He'll most likely never play for Chelsea.

that's a lot of family ties for chelsea, between the hazard family, the musonda family, the lukaku family (maybe the other brother next time?)
other players from the club that have family that also play football professionally are lampard, sturridge, malouda, obi mikel, and i see that they have 2 players named "clifford" in their reserve squad, maybe they are related

Interesting thread, here are some examples from Eastern Europe.

Bisser Mikhaylov (grandfather), Borislav Mihaylov (father), Nikolay Mihaylov (son) – they are all goalkeepers and have been capped for the Bulgarian national team (in fact Borislav is the all-time leader in appearances). Also, professional footballer Zhivko Milanov is the son-in-law of Borislav Mihaylov and has been capped for Bulgaria.

Veselin Minev and Yordan Minev – twin brothers, also Bulgarian internationals, played against each other in the “Eternal Derby†(a major club rivalry between Levski Sofia and CSKA Sofia)

Robert Kovac and Niko Kovac – brothers, both used to be part of the Croatian national side and were key members of the team.

Josip Simic – brother of Dario Simic (Dario has earned 100 caps for Croatia).

Predrag Stevanovic and Aleksandar Stevanovic – young football stars who are both ethnically Serbian, but also hold German citizenship.

Dorin Goian (Romanian defender) – he has three brothers who are also footballers and are still plying their trade.

One other case that Frederic may be familiar with – Samir Bengelloun and Younes Bengelloun are French-born players who have Algerian roots and both used to be part of the Loko Plovdiv team. Many Senegalese players are also on the rosters of clubs from the Balkans and they frequently have family or friendship ties with each other.

i can understand families where there are good goal keepers, even if sometimes it goes overboard (mandanda and his brothers for example)
goalkeeper is a really special position and you need to train properly to become a great goalkeeper

but for the other positions, a great player's son won't be as great as his father

see great players like hagi, maradona, messi, they all have something special
that talent is really rare and there is no chance that his son or grandson can have it
instead, another random kid will have it
that's how i see it

i take these players as examples because they really had/have nothing special physically, they are small, relatively unathletic, and their sons will probably be the same but whithout that thing that made them stand out

i had never heard of these bengelloun brothers
they seem almost black
since they are from paris, maybe their father was arab and their mother black, it was the case for the goalkeeper that played at the 2010 world cup for algeria, Raïs M'Bolhi

Frederic -

It is hardly surprising that the sons, nephews, et cetera of former players are often professional players themselves. "Names" open doors for trials and influence signings and the like.

This isn't unique to football. Here in Australia, the sons of several rugby league stars of the 1970s and 1980s have featured in the NRL. Below are a few examples:

Craig Young - son Dean plays for the St.George-Illawarra Dragons

"Slippery" Steve Morris (my favourite player as a kid...) - twin sons Josh and Brett respectively play for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the Dragons

Eric Grothe - son Eric Grothe Jr. played for the Parramatta Eels and the Sydney Roosters

Wayne Pearce - son Mitchell plays for the Sydney Roosters

I agree, goalkeepers are a unique breed and it’s extremely risky/potentially costly for a team to violate the principles of meritocracy when it comes to picking goalies, so it’s less likely that the “well-connected players†in a club are the custodians. Kasper Schmeichel, the son of Peter Schmeichel, used to be very highly rated (deservedly so, imo), but recently he hasn’t really been in the spotlight/attracted attention from big clubs…let’s hope that he will rediscover his form.

i had never heard of these bengelloun brothers they seem almost black

Yes, they probably have Congolese or Northern African nomad (there are some black tribes in North Africa) roots. Marriages between Central Africans (like Congolese) and Algerians are not that uncommon in certain places.

As for Rais M’Bohli, his mother is Algerian (she influenced him to adopt the Muslim faith) and his father is Congolese. He used to play in the Japanese League, but has now risen to prominence (I even saw his name in the Wikipedia article on famous Afro-Arabs) and was on trial with Manchester United a few months ago. It’s interesting that so many players who have minority backgrounds are from Paris.

Nice profile picture (like the way the player fits the natural surroundings), btw, I am sure that Giroud will shine in the Premier League. :)

i was looking at who chelsea bought this summer, and i found out that they bought another player with family ties:

Brady, a 6ft 4in defender, is one of Europe's hottest prospects and is the nephew of West Ham chairman Karren Brady.

anyway a friend told me that chelsea was doing good this summer regarding the transferts and he was quite right: so far all the players that they bought are whites (oscar, hazard, marko marin, hazard's brother, and this young brady)

meanwhile they sold drogba, bosingwa, kalou

and some annoying players are loaned to other clubs, like lukaku or some black dutch
the young belgian kevin de bruyne is on loan to werder bremen in germany, i would have liked to see him play for chelsea but werder isn't a bad club either

ok, now it goes really overboard: the djorkaeff family was already in my list of related french players because both father and son (the famous youri djorkaeff and his father jean) were professional players and played for france internationally

but now, youri djorakaeff's son, 16 years old oan djorkaeff, just signed for saint etienne!
so that's 3 generations of djorkaeff that are professional players

the other day france played against finland i was not pleased by finnish football:
there are 2 twin brothers (niklas and henrik moisander) that play internationally for finland
there are also the 2 eremenko brothers, who were born in russia - they are the son of a russian player who also has finnish nationality: Alexei Eremenko Senior
then there are the hetemaj brothers, both albanians but both played internationally for finland
this is not the sign of a healthy player development

another ones from france: the son of legendary french player alain giresse is a professional player: his name is thibault giresse
Hassan Lingani is the brother of Issoumaïla Dao, one of these african players who came in france illegally to play football and became homeless when they were refused by french clubs
but he finally became a professional player
he was adopted by the president of the club that gave him a second chance, so that's another family tie for this player :icon_confused:

I am tired of these Albanians and former Yugoslavs all over Europe. They are lucky their countries were such disasters because now they get to live in Finland, Sweden, Switzerland etc.

also they could live there if their country is a disaster, but having the local cityzenship? that's another step, and a huge one!
cityzenship is such a joke today that it will be soon abolished
migrating to sweden does not make you a swede

it was never this way, in ancient times a roman living in another country was still a roman, and until very recently it was the same for germany too
nazi germany used the same principle than the romans regarding cityzenship and it's transmission, so for this matter they are the only european government in recent times

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

another example regarding this thread:
Cha Du-Ri, born in germany, is the son of a professional player, regarded as the best korean player of all times
but Cha Du-Ri is a mediocre player

Rigobert Song is the cousin of Alex Song. Rigobert played for Liverpool in 99-00 among other clubs.

Rigobert was laughing at the way Carragher played defense so in practice Carragher nailed him with a rough tackle.

He started out at Metz.
