I'm curious how many members play golf. There is a fair amount of interest on the forum, so wondering if it is result of being a golfer or is just being a fan. I do not play but have watched through the years. I found it entertaining and relaxing and appreciate the skill.. I have chipped a few balls in the backyard many, many years ago, but that's about it.

Quiet Speed, my fellow native Mississippian, I've never played an 18 hole round, but got rained out with my brother in law on a 9 hole course some years back. It was quite the hilarious experience, with the golf cart battery running down as we approached the clubhouse in the pouring rain. We planned to make it up, but never have, as he and my sis moved away from that area. I must admit it was fun, and I think I would've enjoyed the game of golf more overall if I'd learned more about it as a boy.

I've played a few times here and there over the years. First time as a high schooler stoned. Had a blast. Haven't played enough to be good at it (I have a bad slice or hook, can't remember which) but I do enjoy when I play it. It's very quiet and serene on a golf course. A landlord of mine a long time ago took it up at 57, became hooked and played into his late 70's.

Right now my right arm has something wrong with it so I couldn't play if I wanted to. Well, maybe I could just take it easy and chip my way around the course. Nothing like whacking a good drive though.

One of those things I'm wishing I had done more of, that's for sure.

I began playing a little when I was in college, then when I got out of the military, USMC, I started to play again mostly on Saturday's. Then I got married and started a family and didn't play consistently for a long time.

I tried to start playing again regularly last year, practicing a little through the week and playing on Saturday morning's, early, like 6:45 to get out there before the crowd. I don't like being out there for 5 or 6 hours. If I tee off with one partner, I can usually play 18 and be done by 10:30 and have the rest of the day to do other things.

I kind of started neglecting my gym time, so I haven't played as much this year choosing to stay in the gym more.

I'll probably start playing again after the 4th, maybe every other Saturday morning.

I fall under the once in a blue moon category.

I played alot of mini-golf as a kid. It was a "family vacation activity" that we all enjoyed. When I got a bit older I played some pitch and putt (par 3) courses. It wasn't until after college that I started playing full courses. It was a college friend who worked as a greens keeper that really got me into it. For a few years, I was playing 4 or 5 times a summer. Lately, it's been less and less. Maybe once or twice the whole year. I still enjoy the sport but now it sort of boils down to time and money. More often than not, I don't have enough of either.

I would recommend that anyone interested, should play. It's a mental and physical challenge that can be a great deal of fun. Plus it gets you outdoors and can be a great deal of walking if you forgo the cart. Once you've played a few rounds, there's a good chance you might get hooked. It'll also give you a greater appreciation for watching the pros. You'll realize how difficult the "routine shots" are, that the pros make look easy.

Blue moon for me as well. I really enjoy playing, but it's exceedingly difficult to make time for it. I haven't picked up a club in awhile. On the rare occasion that I play, it's usually a 9-hole scramble with a church group. Lots of fun trying to figure out where everybody's balls end up!

In my college-age days, a group of us would relatively regularly go play "beer golf". 9 holes is the limit when attempting this. It's straight-up golf, except that you can deduct a stroke for each brew you consume. It gets hilarious towards the 7th hole and beyond. You learn the concept of diminishing returns and the meaning of "octuple bogey" and other obscure golf jargon!

I only started playing 15 years ago but love it though I don't get to play nearly as much as I'd like.

One of the many great things about golf is that it can be played for a lifetime. It's best to learn it as a kid, starting as an adult is a lot tougher.

I still have a goal of beating the rapidly declining Tiger Woods one-on-one in 2017! Maybe one of the networks will go for it and throw some money into it. We can have Thrashen do play by play in order to provoke Tiger into having a full-on meltdown.

Ha ha! Good stuff, Don! I'd pay to see that. :)

I used to play 1-2 times a week but for the last few years it's only been 1-2 times a year. Recently me and some friends started a regular foursome once a month so I'm starting to get back in the swing of it. Golf is a great game. Like Don said you can play your whole life, it's a great way to spend a few hours outside, and it's also good exercise as you get about a five mile walk on an 18 hole round.

We should all take up golf and have a Caste Football Golf tournament. Good stories from you all. I’m leaning toward giving the game a try, haven’t fully decided.

A golf get-together might be a good idea. Something informal might work a lot better than a formal meeting, which has been discussed before but never got into the serious planning stage.

Maybe a few days in Vegas or Florida during winter. . . though Vegas can have unpleasant weather for golfing at times, but there are always other things to do there.

I took a golf course as an elective my freshman year of college. That same year, I played 9 holes with my Dad & shot a 60 something. I was using standard size (rental) clubs which didn't work well with my 6'8 frame. ;-)

I haven't played since & really have no interest to. I personally find it a boring game to watch. I guess that I just prefer the "contact" sports like football & MMA. :)

Not a golfer. Never have played probably never will. In the words of Kid Rock "never made par and I could give two ****s." thatbeing said I never had anyone to take me golfing when I was younger so that could be a reason for my lack of interest.

Okay, here’s the situation. I bought a driver and an 8 iron at a yard sale, some plastic and whiffle golf balls and tees at Chinamart. Been teeing off on a few balls in the backyard the last few weeks. It was slice city the first few chops at the ball. After some time things are straightening out. Today everything hit was straight. Tomorrow might be a different story. I’ve hit the real golf balls half heartily into the neighbor’s field just to get a feel. If I get motivated the next step might be trying to locate a driving range. Good move?

Great move. Practice is the best way to get any consistency at golf and whiffle balls and driving ranges are two of the best ways to get lots of swings. I would add one long iron (3 or 5) to your collection. The three clubs you will use the most are the driver-used almost every hole, a long iron-used on most holes, and an 8 or 9 iron-used on many holes. The more swings you take the more likely you can develop an effective swing that is repeatable and dependable.
