The truth is that Dirk is shutting down Gasol, something that no afrolet was able to do in the NBA.
But ofcourse, no "expert" wants to give Dirk credit for that. The all love to spit on Gasol, the man without who the Fakers would not had won the last 2 championships.
And of course, this situation shows who is the real MVP of the Fakers. When Gasol plays bad, the Fakers lose. When he plays good, they win.

Kobrick Cryant with 17 points on 16 shots.
Dirk had 32 on 19 shots. Plus cluch assists, great passes from double teams, plus shutting down Gasol.
Peja was massive, absolutely massive in the fourth quarter with 11 points.

Dirk finally has something on his team that he missed before, a good center in Tyson Chandler. Kobrick would not had won one ring if he had to play with the joke centers Dirk was forced to play with so far. Too bad the Mavs couldnt get Gortat in 2009, otherwise last year they would have been contenders, and this year they would be favourites.

Great posts by all of you guys. I'm still nervous. Dallas has to get it done. Win it all this year. Dallas has never won a championship in Basketball. It sure would be great to see on of the greatest players of our generation(Nowitzki), to bring home the title. He is so fun to watch. If they do win it all, who is to say they can't repeat. Both San Antonio and Los Angeles have more holes to fill and they play older than the Mavs. Let's go Mavs. Dirk is the man!

Don't get me wrong I like Dirk as a player . but not as a person how could he fall for that ugly black woman who was trying to ruin his life when so many beautiful white women would die to be with him. That to me was intolerable, and the reason our race is in trouble and doomed to be extinct. White Power, it bothers me a great deal that Dirk prefers dark meat over and over again (his current GF is also a Swedish mullato, I believe), but most people see a white basketball player dominating, and that's a good thing to kill a few stereotypes and hopefully encourage other young white players to chase their basketball dreams. So, I try to separate the person and focus on the player, who's an all-time great and a HOF'er.

The Mavs cannot give Lakers any hopes and must win game 4 tomorrow to close it out. If LA somehow gets a couple of wins and the series comes back to Dallas for game 6, the pressure will be right back on Dallas. So, I'll be rooting for the sweep.

Dirk's been VERY clutch this series. He's playing within himself. If he's double teamed he knows he has teammates that can make the shots down the stretch. However, when he's single teamed he knows he's the best scoring option, in this case, to deliver for Dallas. Dirk now has lots of help. Kobe was "slightly" more of an impact player than Dirk a year or two back, but this series has shown that Dirk is better than Kobe this year.

The Mavs are playing great. That's why they won. Dirk is having a better series than Kobe.
The Lakers did well with a big front line and Shannon Brown in the game. Kobe screwed it up trying to play "hero ball."

The Mavs are built very well. A great superstar to build around with an unselfish point guard and a defensive center. Peja, Barea, and Terry have been huge. Haywood had 7 rebounds off the bench for Dallas in Game 3 which was very important. Marion is doing great in his role. He's had a very good career and sounds like a real professional, willing to take a role as the fifth or sixth guy. I still think they need to get a contribution from Brian Cardinal. He is the tough power forward they need. He gives them a different look than Shawn Marion.

They are playing as a team while LA isn't. Hats off to Dallas.

Way to go Mavs. They are running the Lakers right out of the building. I love it! I can't wait for Kobe to retire. Tired of his antics. He elbowed Barrea like he has done to players his whole career. In all my years of watching NBA playoff games, I don't think I've ever seen a BENCH impact or erupt this much...

Even Brian Cardinal hit one. Hopefully he plays more. I think he might as an enforcer at
power forward. Dirk and Marion are more finesse.
Jason Kidd played great. Great ballhandling, passing and defense. Barea played awesome off the bench.

The Mavs feature a bunch of great players who deserve rings: Dirk, Kidd, Peja, Marion, and Jason Terry.
A ring will help their standings in NBA history. Five underrated stars too. What a team!

I am pulling for the Grizzlies against the Thunder. Gasol has had a great playoffs. Z Bo is playing great throwback basketball. OJ is playing hard off the bench. Grevious Vazquez reminds me of a young Manu Ginobili. The Iranian big man Hamed Hadaddi is playing well in limited minutes.

Mavs-Grizzlies would be a great Western Conference Finals. Two great, unselfish teams. Both are basically underdogs.

I wouldn't get my hopes up about Brendan Haywood..

During his UNC days, he was being hyped-up as a "new Shaq and a future 1st Overall Draft Pick," but he had an EPIC FAIL (he wasn't even dominant in college). That's how I remember it, and the fact that he was never made "the man" - not even 3rd or 4th option - in the NBA is further proof of his Kwame Brown-ness!

In his 4 years at UNC, his career average was 10 PPG and 6 RPG. And, he went 20th Overall in the Draft, about where I thought he went (I was thinking he went a little bit after 20).

Well, despite my predictions that it wouldn't happen (I hoped it would happen, though) L.A. got swept.

I really hope Dirk can will it all this year. He's at the very edge of his primetime years and he probably can't sustain this level of awesome play too much longer.

It's too bad in that sense, this whole sports thing. In any other facet of life -- like a lawyer or businessman -- a man forty or forty-five is still considered pretty young, but a very young man like Dirk Nowitzki (what is he, 32?) or Kobe Bryant (same age?) is already considered old.

In tennis or gymnastics it's probably even tougher, the whole age concept.

Is Dirk a top ten guy all time? Not sure. There are a lot of great players. But if you
are picking an all-time team (12 guys) then he would be considered given that he scores well, is a great shooter, a
very good rebounder and a very tough matchup.

For my all-time team I would put Magic and Stockton at point guard, MJ, Oscar Robertson, and Jerry West at shooting guard. At center I will go with Kareem, Wilt, and Shaq. At small forward I will go with Larry Bird and Scottie Pippen. At power forward, Tim Duncan is a great pick since he is 7 feet tall and a good shot blocker as well as a standard power forward. With the other power forward Dirk is a good choice since he can score from the outside and can shoot over anyone. McHale had great low post moves and he can block shots. Plus, he was good off the bench. Karl Malone could be the pick since he was the master of the pick-and-roll. But he didn't really come through in the clutch.
So you either go with McHale or Dirk, depending on what you want from a power forward. But, you already have good post players in Kareem and Duncan as well as Shaq and Wilt for brute strength so Dirk is the guy who can score from anywhere and spread the floor. That would be a great, well-balanced team.

Just voted "yes" of course. I hope the Mavs can dominate and win a championship. However, we have to remember the nba is VERY manipulated by the league and via the refereeing. There is NO DOUBT that they (the legue rulers, i.e. Stern and his ilk want the hype machine around James to get his title, and they may just hand it to him for the "ratings". It's discusting. We're still only in the conf semis but man, i'd hate for that guy to get a ring over a class act like Dirk and the Mavs...

I don't believe Dirk is a top-10 all-time player right now. Top 15-20, I think so, but I would not rate him that high yet.

The thing is, his legacy is far from over. What will be the answer if we ask this question 5 years from now? He will have hopefully won a championship, and moved to #6 or #7 on the NBA all-time scoring list. That would be sufficient to make him top-10 all-time, no doubt about it.

I like Pistol Pete's "All NBA Team" of players that have played in the NBA. Of players that were still in the league by 1970 (I think West qualifies?)- here's what my crystal ball says of the top 3 players at each position by the time 2020 rolls around.

By the end of Lebron James' and Durant's career, I'd predict I'd pick them at SF to back up Larry Bird on my all time team.

At PF I'd go with Dirk, with Duncan and Malone as the backups.

I wouldn't pick Shaq as one of my centers. I'd go with, Wilt, Bill Russell and Kareem. Just missed would be Dwight Howard, Hakeem the Dream, David Robinson and Bill Walton. Those guys would all be on my list before Shaq who would be 8th. Shaq was a great player, but- if officiated correctly- he'd typically average about 25-30 minutes a game before fouling out. I usually saw Shaq get away with 3 or 4 offensive fouls a game.

At PG I'd go with Magic, followed by Stockton and then Nash. Just missed would be Pistol Pete.

At SG I'd agree, I'd go with Jordan, Oscar Robinson and Jerry West. Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Dallas being older will have to get back quick on missed shots. I still think they can get it done. Dirk is going to take command in this series in my opinion. Let's go Mavs. Come on Dirk!
