Danny Woodhead could easily be a Warrick Dunn/ Maurice Jones-Drew type NFL runner. He would be perfect in the two RB offenses most NFL teams are now using.

In truth he could carry the load all alone as an NFL RB. But let's be realistic here; a 5'7 white guy isn't going to get anything better than sharing carries. Even if Woodhead was at Barry Sanders level (he's actually close to being as elusive as Sanders IMO and he's just as fast. Woodhead isn't as strong or blessed w/ as good vision as Sanders though) he would only get to share carries b/c he's white.

Edited to Add: Here's hoping that some NFL team will draft Danny and let him be their scat back!

Danny is picking up exposure. Nice article in sports illustrated that praised him calling him explosive and athletic, they even suggested that D-1 schools may want him now

Consider this a reminder-CSTV will show Chadron State at Nebraska-Kearney at 7PM Central tomorrow night. You can also watch it on Nebraska Education Television-2 and on the Altitude Sports and Entertainment Network. You can also watch it online at:

http://www.cstv.com/ncaa/divii/

This may be your only chance to see Danny Woodhead, the best RB in college football history on TV. Don't miss it!Edited by: Colonel_Reb

I will really be dissapointed if this kid is not given a fair shot. He is around the same size as Maurice Jones-Drew and i think he could be jsut as effective

Doesn't matter Celtic. The kid is white. He could be just the right size, then it would be "hip swivel" or speed or some other stupid, meaningless parameter.

They'll claim he doesn't have "breakaway speed" or lacks "fluid hips" or any other garbage to which they have nothing to back their claims up against other than the fact that Danny is a white RB.

Does any older guy remember the last time an NFL team had a water bug type white tailback? I can't recall any in recent memory. I think you have to go back to the 60's?

I'll take a stab at it and say the white scat back on the Chargers was Dickie Post who played from 67-71.His first three years were good but then things went downhill.Injuries?

Yeah, Dick Post. Dick played at the University of Houston where he also had the reputation of plowing as well as skirting defenses. He is one of my favorite runners. Warren McVea, his teamie at UH asserted that Post, "didn't like playing with blacks."

The last waterbug white back in the NFL? Hmmmmmm ... Maybe Jimmy Bertelsen of the LA Rams, though he was pretty tough ... Dickie Morton with the Steelers as kick returner ... Barty Smith of the Packers? Ed Podolack? Not Kiick ... Wow. I'd say Ed Podolack of the Chiefs.

I think he was featured on an NFL network program about the 10 most elusive runners (i could be mistaken though).

During what time period did all these guys play? I'm guessing 60s and 70s since these names don't sound at all familiar.

just to show how ridiculous the lack of recruitment at the Division I level because of Danny's "lack of size"...

it should be enlightening to know that Kansas State who insisted that Danny was too short and too skinny (he is 5-9, 200 pounds) now have a starting tailback who is 5-11 and only 200 pounds, and a back-up, "heir apparent" tailback who is listed at only 5-7, 187 pounds!

funny, according to their KSU bios... both of these guys "play bigger than their size."

interesting what black skin will do, isn't it?

For those of you who, like me, were wondering when Danny would be back, I just received a quick reply from Chadron State Assistant SID, Con Marshall.

"There's a chance he could play on Saturday, but most likely he will be held out until the playoffs. If Chadron State wins on Saturday, it appears that the Eagles will receive a first-round bye and have a playoff game on Nov. 24."

The really should have Danny sit out this game so he can play at 100% for the playoffs. It would be great to see Woodhead have a terrific postseason run and parlay that into a couple of postseason bowl game invitations(Shrine Bowl, East/West Bowl...ect).

Thank you White CB, yes I am an ossified old man

.

Yes, they all played back in the 1960s and 70s some overlapping the decades. Post was with the Chargers from 1967-70, was traded to the Broncos where he spent half the 1971 season was then sent to the Oilers where he finished up his career in the last half.

Bertelsen was a good one. Came out of U of Texas in 1972 and played with the LA Rams 1972-76 quit early because he was tired of the pro grind.

Podolak was a converted QB from Iowa, Dickie Morton went to Arkansas (from Dallas) and was the SWC's all-time leading rusher when he left.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.Edited by: Bronk

Thanks for the info. You can understand why I don't know these players but what's worse is my friends who claim they're "football fans" and yet have no idea who Steve Largent is!!! I almost crapped my pants and had to explain to them how Steve set all the records that Rice broke. Although I guess it doesn't help that the media gives the guy no credit whatsoever. Oh and who is that guy in your avatar Bronk?

I don't want to hijack this thread either but here goes. The last white guys who could be considered scat backs were Tommy Vigorito who played with the Miami in the early 80's.Nick Giaquinto who played with the Skins in the same time period. Then there is Steve Bartalo who played the 1987 season with the Bucs but he had a big career with Colorado State and finally Scott Lockwood out of USC who had a 100 yard game late in the 1992 season with New England then disappeared.

I looked up some info on Tommy Vigorito earlier today. I wish I could find a full list Miami's starters for 1982. All I can find to go on are stats and a few partial lists of starters, but it is easy to see that they were still a very solidly majority white team in 1982.
