Pretty much what I expected. Seems like almost every white sprinter peaks in their late teens to early 20's, whereas black sprinters plateau, then get progressively faster shortly thereafter.

Hopefully Lemaitre can crack 10 before the season's over. He might come back next season .1 or .2 secondsslower, and have to fight like hell to recapture sub 10.20. I'd hate to see him blow his chance while he's only .02 off.Edited by: BrockFan

Except Shirvo, they all peak after 20, Borzov,
Rossouw or Mennea (27 when he did 10'01) , Allan Wells champion at 28, Woronin (28 yo when he did
10'00)....

Agreed. Pickering's time was 10.46, and all indications since the indoor season was that this was going to be another bad year for him.
Regarding peaking - some top sprinters continue to improve into their late 20s, but most seem to peak much at a much younger age.
I do believe Lemaitre's time is now. He needs to break the magic barrier this year. No telling what the future will hold - just look at Guliyev this year.

Meanwhile, Laura Turner, who has been one of Britain's top sprinters for several years now, won the women's 100m. I think she has won this championship before.

While I think Craig is done for this season, he still could fix things with a new coach. I'm not saying it would work 100% because things don't work like that but he would have a good chance to get things going back in the right direction. How many sprinters remain with a coach that hasn't helped him since 2007. Part of it could be from him peaking but it also could be because of the coach. I vote the coach as the number one problem. Craig is still only 23 and he has time to possibly fix the problem. I just don't think he should give up with only two years till the olympics in his home country! Nick Smith just set a new p.b. in the 60 this year after many years of stuggling and he is older than Craig.

I feel bad for the kid. Keep your head up Craig. Run some random meets and work on a few things. Most of all he needs to fire his coach immediatley. Good luck Craig.Edited by: white lightning

Wells didn't become a sprinter until he was 24 yrs old, so you can't really use him for comparison purposes in this case.

Here are the fastest white sprinters from the past decade or so. They're off the top of my head so I'm probably missing a few.

Simone Collio and DeGregario of Italy are both getting faster and they are 30 and 31 years of age. Cerutti was having a good season but had an injury today. Hopefully it's minor and he can still break his p.b. easily. Yes many white sprinters peaked early but others continue to get better. I may be a little frustrated with the 2010 season, but it's not over yet and it's only one summer anyway in a non worlds/or olympics year. Edited by: white lightning

obviously peds play a part with athlete performance longevity, but also in relation to times on the track (later in one career). i agree with WL, pickering has to move on ,its time for a new coach!craig still has the tools ,just needs a different influence. and hey why not go to the states.

Craig finished 2nd in his 200 meters heat to qualify for the final. The 200 finals is only about an hour away. The kid has to be exhausted but Pickering is a gamer. You have to admire him for not giving up. He could have just pulled out of the 200 after his bad loss in the finals of the 100. He has to be crushed. I would love to see him make the top 3 in the finals of the deuce. Good luck Craig. No matter what happens, keep sprinting.

Another crushing blow for Craig and his confidence. I'm sure fatigue played a role as well.

It's probably PED usage. In Baseball many sluggers lost their batting eye in their early 30's. Jimmy Foxx was about 32 when he faded. Jim Rice was about the same age. When steroids took over the power scene McGwire and Bonds had their best seasons in their mid to late 30's. Manny Ramirez was nearly as prolific a hitter at 37 as he was in his 20's. Sprinting is no different. I know Bruny used steroids late in his career as he gained an unusual amount of muscle of mass in the 99' season when he nearly won the world title.

Meanwhile, Laura Turner, who has been one of Britain's top sprinters for several years now, won the women's 100m. I think she has won this championship before.

Laura Turner also won the 200m.
In fact the 1st 4 places were taken by white women; and two of their best 200m runners (also white), Emily Freeman and Hayley Jones didn't even run!
Where are these fast white women in the US?

One other note - Elaine O'Neill who came in 2nd is 20 yrs old.
Another up and coming sprinter for them is Emily Diamond - 19 yrs old and 8th fastest time in the UK this year.
Again - where are the American versions of these women?Edited by: jacknyc

England doesn't discriminate in track nearly as much as the U.S. does. It is alot more fair there. One thing to keep in mind though is that it's alot easier to make the UK Squad than to make the US Team. The times here are jaw dropping so it's very difficult for anyone other than the few of the edge of the bell curve to make the team.

In the US, white kids get caste-ed out after high school, and a lot in high school. This has been going on since the 70s. Track is very similar to football here. They simply will not develop you if you're white. If you're white, you're on your own.

W/L's hit on it!
a mid 23 doesn't cut it in the U.S trials with so many able to run that or better. A mid 23's in Britain will run you a place.

So a white American with the speed of Laura Turner would probably become a very fast woman who picks another sport and does well

I was reading an interview with Craig. He said that other than possibly being picked for the 4 x 100 Relay Team, he might not make the Euro Champs at all. His only chance of making the individual 100 would take a miracle. Craig would have to run two different races in the next two weeks with both of them being sub 10.21 which is the standard for the Euro Champs. So it's almost impossible to expect that. His fastest time of the year is only a 10.38! Again I ask why hasn't he fired his coach? He needs some one who can put his career back on track. He can still make the olympic team in two years but he has to start preparing right away!

I'm starting to think taking it easy over the winter was a bad idea. as much as I thought it would help, I really think it hurt him. really it just comes down to a change in coaching. and though guys on the board like Jacknyc don't want to talk about Craig anymore since he is running like crap, I would like to point out a few things about Craig. first off, we know he's got what it takes to run fast, and I don't believe he has peaked. he also has a unbelievable work ethic and this is shown in the fact that hasn't succumb to the use of PEDs.also, when you take into the fact he has a ton of negative forces working against him, you really have to take your hat off to this kid.he is flat out hated by his fellow black sprinters, and its got to be hard to line up with guys that are only beating you because they are on PEDs.let face it, no one in the UK final other than chambers dropped a great time, and I would say half of them are on PEDS. has anyone notice how puffy Mark Lewis-Francis is looking these days? I give Craig allot of credit for staying in the game with these conditions, and I'm sure allot of this crap season is mental.you come out in the beginning of the year and drop a sh*t time, and that can just mess you up for the rest of the season.Craig needs to stay positive and go find a new coach. he isn't done yet and still has another 4-5 good years left in him.

Craig will be trying for a miracle in a couple of days. He is racing on July 7th in the Super 8 Race in Glasgow. He has had good success on this track in the past. Maybe he can finally put together a descent race. I just want him to get everything sorted out going into next season. Hopefully 2011 can be the year he regains his 2007 form. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I still wish he would get a new coach. My thinking is that he is waiting till the end of the summer before he switches to a new coach. Good luck Craig!
