I was wondering what you guys thought of some of the colleges I'm applying to. Especially about getting in, the girls, and people who believe in God and my point of views (extreme conservative obviously). I would also like to join a fraternity. Although I don't have a Sothern accent, I think I'll fit in just fine. Feel free to give some much needed advice/ ideas. Also, I want to be an elementary school teacher.

So far:

Auburn University
Ole Miss
...

StarWars, I can tell you right now that your political and religious views won't fit in at most schools, especially big time liberal schools of which OM is one. I don't know about Auburn's school of education, but OM's is ok. I was in that program for a time but transferred so I could graduate earlier. Your scores are really good, so getting in to either one won't be a problem. I don't know where you are from, but I would check out a regional school in your state or in neighboring states for a good Ed program. Many times, those programs are ranked as high or higher than many big name universities. OM is a big time party school where the frats mean everything. If your not in one, your not in the social loop at all. It really is pathetic from my point of view. Many smaller schools have plenty of frats though, so I'd recommend looking for a program near you that is ranked pretty highly. You might talk to some of your teachers and get their opinions as well. Its more important to get into a school with a better education program, and let the other things fall where they may. The program's reputation matters to a lot of employers.

I went to grad school, history,at Auburn. Go War Eagles! Didn't join any fraternitiesbut the young people there seemed to enjoy the campus. Good career choiceIMHO. I've been teaching for awhile and you can't beat the time off. The pay here in GA isn't bad either. As long as you can manage your classroom you shouldn't haveany problems. Edited by: Menelik

To expand a little bit on what Col. Reb stated schools of education (wherever you go) are notorious for political correctness and multi-cult bs. I didn't have to deal with it much when I went to school because I majored in secondary, 6-12,history. Other then introduction to edu. and student teaching I was a straight history major. HOWEVER (at least here in GA) elementary teachers practically live in their school's edu. department. Have you thought about teaching higher grades? If not like Tom Iron told me in another thread "keep it professional" and you wont have any problems.

I have a lot of practice with liberals, growing up in the North. I do not bring up my beliefs unless someone else asks me and I feel they are intelligient enough to handle them.

I am seriously thinking about teaching secondary school english as well. So I might apply as undecided liberal arts to Auburn and Ole Miss.

Honestly, to list my priorities, which I admit are a little dumb:

1. Big Southern School
2. Good Looking Gals
3. A lot of white people
4. Big Frat Scene
5. Conservative
6. Good Education, haha. Only because I feel that if I put enough into it I can learn a lot anywhere.

What about the Univ of Florida. Why do you want to go in the South? Is it the weather or cultural differences?

If I had to do it all over again I probably would have been a teacher.I would have learned Italian or French. I never even thought about teaching, but now that I have worked for several large corporations all I can say is these places are very nasty places to work.

There might be better looking girls in the South. Although when I was in college I didn't find most girls attractive, but now I find 80-90% of college aged girls attractive.

It's good to be an extrovert and be able to go into new situations easily without worry of failure. Some people have that and some don't, but I think it helps in life. I am an introvert unfortunately and I think it held me back.

Florida is a very tough school to get into. I don't think I have the grades for a university of that caliber nowadays.

Indeed, Europe. All of my friends laugh at the fact that I want to be a teacher both because they think it's a horrible job and because they can't picture me being good with kids. That's okay though, because all of my friends are DWF dumbasses who will never leave their hometown. Not only is teaching rewarding, but the pay goes from not bad to good as you progress, the security is good, the hours are awesome, and summers off would be great. I think I'm pretty good with kids. And Europe, I think it's funny that all of your posts always lead to how you think girls are unattractive or how you're an introvert or how you hate your job. I'm trying to be helpful when I say you need to gain some confidence, man.

Thanks for the help Col Reb and Menelik! So far I'm applying to Ole Miss/ Auburn in the south, U Montana/ U Oregon in the West. I'm curious to what people think of Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

StarWars, I would love to have gone to an SEC school. The better climate, girls, and I like the South. Unfortunately none of those schools had good teams in the sport I competed in. In retrospect, I enjoyed going to the school I did since ninety percent of the athletes were white, including most of the football and half the bball team at times. At an SEC school most of the male athletes will be black since they usually don't have very many mens sports.

My ideal place would be somewhere like Alabama or LSU if the circumstances with their sports were different. I'm happy with the place I went to though.

Good luck with picking the right college. I'm sure you're gonna have a great time wherever you go, and make sure you do all the right things early on with your major (seeing advisors, etc.) because sometimes it can all be very confusing at the beginning. But you don't want to be taking the wrong courses, etc. Anyway enjoy your last year of high school and the beginning of a new chapter in life!

@StarWars: Education should always be your number one priority, otherwise you might end up at a university that does not have an academic environment that is appropriately challenging for you. In addition to that, where you goto school can go a long way towards determining the type of contacts you will have in the business world, as well as what types of internship opportunities you will have.<div>
</div><div>Of course, school and work isn't everything in life, but most academically challenging universities will also have some if not at all of the other things you are looking for (women, political atmosphere, etc.). And, you can get a very good education at a variety of schools that aren't premier academic institutions or well known. It's just harder, and more unlikely, that you will end up where you want to at schools like that if you care about academics and you are smart.</div><div>

I am mature enough to make an education happen wherever I go. I plan on being a serious student, and for me a quality education is inevitable, and therefore not a concern on my list of priorities. Kindof like saying you should care about God first if you go to church for me. I have already decided that all SEC schools have the facilities for me to make education a priority. It is important to decipher between what is inevitable and what is not when taking into account priorities. In the SEC, particularly Auburn and Ole Miss, a good education is inevitable. Therefore my priorities, which I admit I should have clarified as "deciding factors," are more social and atmosphere based. Thanks for the advice!Edited by: StarWars

Very right you are! If you are serious about your education, you are likely to do well wherever you go, especially well regarded schools like in the SEC. By the same token, you can go to Princeton, choose not to attend class, and just drink all the time and be a total F### up. Nobody can make you go to class or do the right thing. That is why what school you go to is no the decider of your eternal destiny. It's the choices you make along the way.

Also to anyone on the board who are high school age, do not take seriously anyone bashing you by saying not to teach their kids. They do not know you and don't know your experience or what you are capable of. I mean, do you want to know everything your kids teacher has done in their lives? Do you want to know what their priorities were for choosing a school? I mean, some people didn't even choose teaching until AFTER they graduated college! Would you forbid them from teaching your kid if their priority wasn't teaching before they even entered college???

I have to say that I'm happy as all hell when I read a CF'er state an intention to be a teacher. I definitely hope this works out for you. It's a noble calling.

Education departments are a joke nowadays anyway. PC to the max. I can't think of any school that you would fit into Star Wars with your smarts and independent thinking. With the marxist grip on academia, where you go won't make any difference.

So it's down to the women. Years ago I had a girlfriend that was from Alabama. I think I should have married that gal but I wasn't ready at the time. Hindsight.

I can't recommend any school, but I can recommend Southern women.

You aren't kidding. The South has an abundance of beautiful, decent girls.

Shut up, once more a cold bucket of water from you on a poster who didn't have it coming. Star Wars is a young man with his whole future ahead of him. He wants to have a good time while going to school and I am sure by the time he becomes a elementary school teacher he will do just fine. He started this thread to get advice from fellow posters and he gets crap from you. Go away, you won't be missed. I am sure your kids know how to be a prick with you doing such a good impersonation of one.

StarWars, I received by undergrad & MBA from (Southern) public universities, which lean too leftist these days. Have you checked out Bob Jones University in SC? My cousin graduated from there & met his wife there. Very conservative values and very White...but there's not a big party scene there (as it's "officially" frowned on). However, I'd assume there's a party "underground" of sorts.

MIAMI UNIVERSITY in Oxford, OH!!!!!!!!!

They have the highest percentage of student population in the Greek Life. If you want to be a Frat guy and aren't southern go to Miami. You'll thank me 4 years later. I guarantee it. The women dress up there to go out and where nothing but the finest. Trust me dude I've partied there many times and always had a good time. Too much of a preppy/J Crew kind of school for me though. They have high academic standards but with your GPA/test scores I know you'll get accepted.

Hillsdale College, Hillsdale Michigan.

Refuses to accept government funding of any kind. Predominantly white, startlingly right-of-center (for a college) and located in a pretty, rural section of south central Michigan.

My senior year of college we had two black male students. That was '96. What a great place that used to be. I hear they've made a major "diversity" push in the years since then. They send me Alumni donation requests every year, which go straight into the trash.
