He no longer sees himself as an NBA prospect and prefers to play his final year at a place where he thinks can win. He’s clearly an NBA talent but I guess he sees the Caste System in his way or just has self confidence issues (also due to the CS). Hopefully he goes to a top program, dominates and gets great exposure in the NCAA tournament. Then I could see him getting drafted (2nd round even) or making a team as an undrafted FA.

Micah Handlogten has quickly become a major priority for high-majors. Handlogten has three years of eligibility remaining, so with the NCAA's new rule limiting two-time transfers, the 7-foot-1 center could be a multi-year rotation player. Florida coach Todd Golden put together a detailed sell for Handlogten to replace All-SEC big man Colin Castleton, and the Gators just hosted Handlogten for an official visit. But the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year is also considering NC State, Auburn, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Virginia and Arkansas.

Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Grand Canyon, Nebraska and Iowa are all in the mix for Valparaiso star Ben Krikke. The 6-foot-9, 235-pound veteran averaged at least 12 points and four rebounds in each of the past three seasons. Krikke is not much of a 3-point sniper (43 career treys in 122 games), but he was one of college basketball’s premier back-to-the-basket scorers this past season. Krikke rated in the 94th percentile in post-up efficiency, averaging a whopping 1.132 points per possession. Iowa leads on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

how cool would it be if Clingan transferred out of UConn, where he’s unfortunately (and wrongly, in my view) stuck behind a black player, to somewhere like Iowa, Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, or Wisconsin?

all those teams are in desperate need of a rim protector, and he can really run (appeals to Iowa and Gonzaga) and is very efficient on his post touches (appeals to Saint Mary’s and Wisconsin).

i haven’t seen any sign that he’s going to transfer, but i can dream!

Taran Armstrong, the 6’6 (or thereabouts) point guard from Cal Baptist, has entered the transfer portal. he’s also considered to be leaning heavily to a very-interested Gonzaga team, although literally dozens of suitors are trying to lure him to their program.

that being said, he’d likely step in as the starting point guard for the Zags from day one, and potentially give them 4 overachievers in their starting lineup next season. time will tell ...

1. DONOVAN CLINGAN'S DECISION TO RETURN TO UCONN SIGNALS WINDS OF CHANGE​

NBA general managers salivated at the chance to nab UConn big man Donovan Clingan in the 2023 NBA Draft. Despite playing just 13.1 minutes per game for the best team in America, Clingan quickly rose up the NBA Draft boards due to his rare combination of size, agility, speed and pure dominance.

But the NBA will have to wait a year. The 7-foot-2, 265-pound big man announced Saturday his return to UConn for a second season.

“You guys are the best fans in the country, we appreciate everything you do for us,” Clingan said at UConn's championship parade. “One felt good, what do you say we run it back next year for No. 2?”

It's a double-edged sword. On one hand, the UConn big man will be a popular All-American candidate in 2023-24. His per-40-minute statistics as a freshman are staggering: 21.1 points, 17.1 rebounds and 5.5 blocks.

It's even better than Zach Edey's numbers as a freshman. Of course, the Purdue big man went on to win National Player of the Year when he finally got to be the man in the Boilermakers' frontcourt. Edey had to wait for All-Big Ten big man Trevion Williams to leave to become a full-blown star.

Like Edey, Clingan had to wait his turn behind monster forward Adama Sanogo.

But Clingan would not put off the NBA Draft buzz without some inside information about Sanogo's status. Enter the transfer portal? Chase professional moola? That's up to Sanogo. But Clingan would not sign up for another year of playing sparingly behind Sanogo. It's his turn.

That means Sanogo has very likely played his last game in a Huskies uniform, and if he hits the transfer portal, teams will clear some room by any means necessary.

Kyle Filipowski is returning to Duke next season (for some reason). He has been a consensus top-20 pick on draft boards for over a year now. I wonder if he intends to play his way up the rankings with an extra year of seasoning or just figures that another year in college will be just as lucrative. He'll definitely be a pre-season All-American and should succeed Drew Timme as the face of college basketball. That can be worth a lot of money. Filipowski's decision also caused one of Duke's top African recruits to immediately ask for a release from his letter of intent. With grad student Ryan Young and incoming freshman PF TJ Power in line for front court minutes and wing Jaden Schutt finally poised to join the rotation, this should be Duke's whitest team in many years.

Unfortunately, this leaves Gradey Dick as *potentially* the only white player slated to be drafted in the first round this year. Without checking, I assume that would be an all-time low. Maybe a playoff team decides to stash a euro kid (or likes Tubelis for the end of their rotation).

Also, Joey Baker was denied a "sixth year" of eligibility and has decided to hire an agent. A former 5-star recruit at Duke, Coach K decided to burn his redshirt with four games left to play in his true freshman season. Baker is too short to make a roster as a 3pt specialist and will likely be looking abroad.

This means Michigan basketball will be adding five new blacks (three transfers, two recruits) and losing its two white contributors (Dickinson and now Baker). PF Will Tschetter got some valuable playing time as a redshirt freshman down the stretch but was definitely "recruited over" in the transfer portal. Lebanese wing Youssef Khayat, who I will count as a white player, burned his freshman redshirt with garbage time minutes this season and does not have a definite path to playing time next year.

Michigan coach Juwan Howard had a hot start to his college coaching career with John Beilein's players. The team has quickly spiraled toward the bottom of the Big Ten. Next season will be the first time in more than 15 years that I won't be bothering to watch any games.

Howard's two "star" freshmen left for the draft last year, too. It would be understandable if they were actually good enough to win in college first.

There's probably a real inefficiency emerging with players ranked #20-50 each year out of high school. They're likely not good enough to win games on their own as freshmen. But if they develop or flash "potential," they're out the door before they've yielded their program any dividends. Look at our guy Donovan Clingan on UConn. Sure, he could have played more, but he was backing up an upperclassman as a true freshman. Because he did a little flashing, it seems like he could have gone pro. I imagine that none of the Huskies coaches and fans even considered losing him a couple months ago.

It would be pragmatic for coaches to key in on players in the #50-120 range, knowing they'll take a few years to play their way into being upwardly mobile. Of course, it's just as easy to "raid" the transfer portal now, let the lesser recruits start at mid-majors, and react accordingly each offseason. The current system is going to suck the energy out of the sport really fast.

Now they have landed transfer guard from Utah State Steven Ashworth!

Creighton is shaping up to a be a CF favorite. Ashworth should pair at guard with Baylor Scheierman who returned using that 5th year or eligibility. Center Ryan Kalkbrenner could also return, since I doubt the NBA will be kicking down his door. That would make 4 top talents to follow.
