The Eagles are always a strong Caste team under Fat Bastard, but at least Casey Matthews has a chance to start at MLB as a rookie after Philly chose not to keep Stewart Bradley.

Casey Matthews not a typical rookie

Casey Matthews wasn't taken in the first round of the April draft, or the second, or even the third. He was selected by the Eagles with the 19th pick in the fourth round. A total of 115 players went off the board before him.

Yet, when the Eagles opened training camp last week, Matthews was doing something that very few of those 115 guys taken in front of him were doing. He was running with the first team.

When the 4 1/2-month lockout ended last week and the linebacker out of the University of Oregon reported to the NovaCare Complex to pick up his playbook before heading up to Lehigh, defensive coordinator Juan Castillo called him into his office and informed him that he was going to be taking the first-team reps at middle linebacker.

"He said you'll be running with the ones," Matthews said. "As a rookie coming in, not every rookie comes in and gets to play right away. I was definitely shocked.

"It was a good feeling at first. Then a little intimidating being up in front of the huddle [making the play calls]. But the more I did, the more comfortable I got. I feel natural at it. I think they're comfortable with me. I'm just looking forward to the challenge."

It's too soon to say whether Matthews will be the Eagles' starting middle linebacker in 6 weeks when they open the season in St. Louis against the Rams. But less than a week into camp, he's given no indication that the job is too big for him.

Considering the significant investment the Eagles have made in their defense the last few days with the additions of cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and defensive linemen Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins, some might question the wisdom of inserting a rookie at middle linebacker.

But this is no ordinary rookie. This is the youngest member of the NFL's royal family. Brother of two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Clay III. Son of Clay Jr., who spent 19 years as an NFL linebacker. Grandson of Clay Sr., who also was an NFL linebacker. Nephew of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce.

"Imagine being him and sitting down for dinner since with that family since he was a kid," Castillo said. "Imagine what they've been talking about all their lives. He couldn't help but learn a lot just sitting there. I would've liked to sit at that table and had dinner with them.

"We just felt he had the right qualities to be the MIKE [middle] linebacker."

The Eagles didn't necessarily draft Matthews because of his last name. But it certainly didn't hurt. Good genes and all that.

The 6-1, 230-pound Matthews doesn't have the extraordinary physical ability of his brother. But he's a smart, instinctive player who has a knack for always being around the football.

It's possible the Eagles will eventually bring in a veteran middle linebacker. But for now, they seem to want to give Matthews as many snaps as possible and see how he does.
When the Eagles didn't attempt to re-sign last year's starting middle linebacker, Stewart Bradley, it was assumed that Jamar Chaney, who played pretty well at the MIKE spot after Bradley dislocated an elbow in December, would replace him. But you know what you do when you assume.

What Castillo did instead was slide Chaney over to the strong side, move strongside linebacker Moise Fokou to the weak side and insert Matthews at MIKE.
The lockout, which wiped out spring minicamps and OTAs and robbed rookies of valuable learning time, was supposed to make it difficult for many first-year players to make significant contributions this season.

Maybe Matthews is the exception. Despite not getting his first peek at the Eagles' defensive playbook until about 44 hours before he stepped on the field here at Lehigh, Matthews has picked up everything fairly quickly.

"It hasn't been as tough as I thought it would be," he said. "I got a quick basic understanding of what we were doing and went from there. It hasn't been too complicated. You just have to keep up.

"It's all about learning the new terminology. I feel like I'm picking it up pretty quick. I'm getting the hang of things."

The MIKE linebacker is responsible for getting the play from the sideline and relaying it to the rest of the defense. For a rookie, that can be intimidating. But Matthews has handled it well.

"I never had to stand up in front of the huddle at Oregon," he said. "But it came pretty natural. It's really not that hard."

Said Castillo: "Casey is very smart, very calm. He doesn't get nervous, doesn't get excited. He just waits for me to make the call. He's just a very confident individual."
Matthews has impressed the Eagles' defensive veterans with his composure and how quickly he has picked up the defense.

"He's still learning," defensive tackle Mike Patterson said. "But we feel comfortable with him out there and that's all that matters. He takes charge when he needs to. He acts like he's been there before."

In a way, he has been. Through his brother, through his father, through his grandfather and through his uncle. He is not your typical deer-in-the-headlights, fourth-round rookie.

It looks like they are already trying to run Casey Matthews out of town.

Despite their public stance to the contrary, the Eagles are reportedly "sniffing around other teams" for an alternative to Casey Matthews at middle linebacker.

"Don't be surprised if a move is made in the next few days to bring in someone who can push Matthews for the job," says beat writer Geoff Mosher. If that option fails, the Eagles can move Jamar Chaney back to the middle. Matthews is clearly on the hot seat.

Some of these teams, like the Eagles, might as well be all black. Let's see, his brother is already an established star, and his father and uncle were great players, but let's turn on the kid because he, like all the black starters on defense, had a poor second pre-season game. I feel sorry for guys like Casey Matthews who stick out like a sore thumb and are such easy targets for the self-hatred of the media and DWFs.

Mathews had one bad blown coverage that led to a long QB pass to Brandon Jacobs. Are the DWFs mentioning the initial missed tackle by Kurt Coleman and than running into Asmoghua when they both tried to tackle Victor Cruz that led to a 74 yard td or the other TD Cruz caught over Asomghua in that game?

Mathews is a rookie and has made mistakes. The Eagles other two starting LBs are not any better but DWF protocol is to blame the white player early and often.

When the "Dream Team" comes up far short of its goals, it's going to be hard to point fingers at many White players. Let's hope this season is Fat Bastard's swan song.

so what are they going to do now, with their scapegoat gone?

Rookie Brian Rolle has replaced Casey Matthews as the Eagles' starting WILL linebacker.

And with that, the Casey Matthews experiment is officially over. The Eagles tried to make the fourth-round rookie their starting middle linebacker, but he flopped badly and lost that job. They then tried Matthews on the weak side, and he blew that chance, too. The athletic Rolle is better than coverage, but is now one of the smallest starting linebackers (5'10/229) in football. The Eagles will remain a plus matchup for fantasy backs going forward.

EDIT it really doesn't take a lot for a rookie white player to be demoted. 3 games... damn! maybe that's a lot!

Three games to be scapegoated out of two different positions. Meantime, an endless army of black players are given half a decade and more to finally realize their non-existent "limitless upside."

The Eagles are falling apart! Superhuman Mike Vick is already getting banged up and the rest of the team has underperformed. Nnamdi looks very average for a shutdown corner. If im any frickin team I'm running the ball straight up the middle at Rolle. That's ridiculous. I have noticed there are several small black LB's in the NFL.. White LB's the same size don't even get a look at most FBS schools, let alone the NFL. I hope the Eagles cut Casey, he deserves a fresh start and an actual chance to get adjusted to the NFL before being ridiculed and demoted for his ghostly white skin.

Their LBs are not good. Mathews is a rookie with potential. At least going forward when the LBs fail miserably they cannot blame Mathews.

I'd be shocked if Philly were to lose to San Francisco this week. Frank Gore has always been overrated and injury-prone, and nothing has changed.. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/411568/frank-gore

Educated guess: Gore should play: Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Wednesday that it is his "educated guess" that both RB Frank Gore (ankle) and WR Michael Crabtree (foot) would be able to play in Week 4 in Philadelphia. Gore told reporters Sunday that he played the second half Week 3 against the Bengals with a banged up ankle.
(Updated 09/28/2011)

Because he's so primitive, which is pretty typical for these Miami-born bros, my guess is that the media just likes building them up as "tough, unstoppable forces." Laughable, really. San Fran has been mired in mediocrity for years' and, yet, Gore has still gotten ridiculous praise. Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice are better players (and they are also smaller like Gore), so a good comparison can be made here. MJD single-handedly gave JAX a much better record in a few seasons, to the point where even some members of the Caste media were surprised by JAX..

MJD and Ray Rice have also played in far-better divisions compared to Gore. They weren't playing behind "super o-lines" either.
____________________________

Thus far this year, there's an appearance that the NFC East is much stronger than the MSM had predicted before the season (all but giving it to Philly), but glaring question marks remain. Washington against St. Louis is an important game this week. If Washington were to lose and become 2-2, that would harm the idea that the NFC East has strong depth this year. Dallas is looking very sloppy, and the Giants' will be tested in several games this season.

About the only meaningful roster additions that Philly made were Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin. All of the "bad tackling" this year doesn't come as a total surprise (just look at last year). However, all Philly has to do is defeat San Fran - could be by only one point - and they will still remain dangerous. Against divisional opponents like Dallas and Washington, they could perform well.

Some of the comments on Gore's CBS page are must read..

Oh, big surprise - Gore sucks again. I have no one to blame but myself. The only people dumber than me were the 49er's who would have been better off buying lottery tickets. What a worthless, bloated, tired, old overrated joke of an athlete. He'll be on my bench until the bye weeks roll around and even then I'll probably use players I picked up on the wire. Thank you experts that recommended him for the second round.

Gore can't even elude his own feet as evidenced by his 2 yd avg. If you've seen him play at all this year (or last) you'd agree that he's lost his vision, elusiveness, speed and power. He starts to go down on first contact (which is usually because he ran into his own linemen) and then dives forward so he can keep his 2 yd avg intact. He's the only RB4 in the NFL that gets 20 touches a game.

Some people are trying to blame Alex Smith, when, reality is, he only has Vernon Davis to throw to.. as Michael Crabtree and Braylon Edwards have been injured.

Eagles MLB Jamar Chaney has been replaced by Casey Matthews in the nickel package.

"When you're 4-8 and not playing defense the way you're supposed to, they're going to make changes," explained Chaney. Matthews hadn't played on defense since his early-season benching. The Matthews-Keenan Clayton pair is the fourth different nickel combo for Philly this season.
