That attitude will land his butt firmly on the bench. Why do white players always bow-down to their black counterparts? The reverse never happens.

I'm happy that Finneran got his money, but it is disheartening to hear him say in interviews that he is looking forward to helping first-round busts Michael Jenkins and Roddy White "develop into stars and to hopefully become starters." W.T.F.?!?

He should have added : "And when they become starters I will be demoted to being a back-up again, but I will cheer them on sitting at the end of the bench."

Perhaps "beta male" would be the appropriate term. They're submissive, like many whites today.

Finneran just lost a lot of respect from me. What a loser additude. The appropiate thing to say was, "I hope to help all the WRs on the team including myself, become better players...blah blah" That comment would have shown 2 things 1. Brian is a team guy
2. Brian is a beta male and not a weak person who satisfied for being a backup

how many of you guys remember Chris Collinsworth? he was the ONLY outspoken white skill guy that i've ever heard about, although i'm pretty young.

anyway, he never backed down to the black afaleete, and was highly outspoken concerning how good he thought he was. all it got him was the a$$hole label despite being a 3-time Pro Bowler.

there are few white players in the League right now who are gifted enough and paid enough to get away with that kind of talk (Grant Wistrom, Adam Archuleta, Matt Jones anyone?), and Finneran certainly isn't the guy to do it. he's a great player, but speaking out about the BS that white guys go through would do nothing but get him a job in the Arena League after a visit from the turk. he's smart enough to know that, however disappointing that is for us.

Did I miss something? Who suggested that Brian Finneran should become the poster boy for this website? But he certainly shouldn't suggest that he isn't starter material. I don't think anyone wants white athletes to act like the typical braggadocious black athlete, but at least have the balls to stick up for yourself. He is one of the better WR in the NFL and doesn't have to take a back seat to anybody.

BTW, Chris Collinsworth may have been label an ******* but he still started. Jeremy Shockey also is very outspoken and is labeled a braggadocious *******, but he still starts and actually gets the ball thrown to him. I can't think of many instances were speaking out about one's talents actually hurt a white players playing time - although it may have hurt their image.

My understanding, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, is that the "beta males" are subservient to the "alpha male" in the pecking order of a pack (like wolves and lions,) so they are basically "weak." Whites basically treat black athletes as "alpha males," that's what I was getting at.

Kaptain Poop is right; we don't need Brian Finneran to actually "speak out;" we need him to have the right attitude. I firmly believe that white athletes should choose their words carefully, especially when the media is around, and that they not do anything to jeopardize their careers. But talented white athletes who believe that they're good enough to start would be nice!

Finneran hurt his knee during practice and may be out for the season depending on the results of an MRI. Note how much this article praises him as Vick's most reliable target when for years the team and fans have wanted to bury him on the depth chart. Now that the Falcons may be without him he'll be recognized for just how good and valuable to the team he is.

Finneran was such a productive player thats its really sad to see him go down like this. He had 50 ctaches for 600 yards and he only started 7 games, not even half the season, last year.

Finneran was pretty much screwed anyway having to play on a team that has a QB that can't throw, but now it looks like he tore his ACL again after missing all of last season. Another white receiver with lots of ability and production who was widely ridiculed for being "slow" despite averaging over 14 yards per reception in his career. What a shame.

Brian just can't seem to get a break. Whether its landing a a team with a good QB, getting respect, or just being healthy Finneran can't catch a break.

or not! This is from Atlanta Journal:

- WR Brian Finneran, who missed the past two seasons after tearing the ACL in the same knee, is making a strong case to be retained. Not only is he catching the ball but also he's re-established himself as a reliable special teams player. That is crucial for any non-starting wide receiver trying to make the team.

nice news, I hope for him that he can stay healthy for the 16 games. He was the favorite receiver of Vick when the two were playing together.

Finneran successfully coming back from missing two full seasons after not once but twice tearing up his knee is one of the great inspirational sports stories of the year. Now that the Falcons are moving out of the coal black Mora/Vick era, with excellent results, it would be nice to see Finneran replace the perpetually underachieving bust Michael Jenkins as the team's number two receiver next year.

Brian has always been under-utilized. He should be starting next season if he stays healthy.

Finneran has already missed two seasons because of blown out knees. Very few athletes would have even tried to come back from that, as Brian did. It might be the end of the road for this very tough player, who was never utilized as much as he should have been despite always being consistent and productive. From Rotoworld:

Falcons placed WR Brian Finneran on injured reserve with an injured PCL, ending his season.

<DIV =s_pNewsTextMain>He won't need surgery, but his knee woes have become chronic. With a long injury history and not much production in his recent resume, the 34-year-old (in January) won't have much of a 2010 market. He's a free agent this spring.

That sux about Brian. He's been one of my favorite Falcons players of the "modern"* era (along with former Falcon Keith Brooking). I hope he can rehab & return, and not have to retire.

* = All Time Favorite Falcons include Tommy Nobis, Jeff Van Note, Steve Bartkowski, Bill Fralic, Mick Luckhurst, Scott Case, Brian Finneran, Bob Christian, & Keith Brooking.

Brian has to rank as one of the toughest players in the NFL in recent years. Just about anyone else would have given up by now. Hopefully he can still be an effective receiver. With his size, hands and route running ability he only needs decent speed to still get the job done. From Rotoworld, which as usual has little respect for him:

Falcons re-signed WR Brian Finneran to a one-year contract. The 34-year-old's season ended early with a torn left PCL after catching only 11 passes. A mainstay with the Falcons since 2000, Finneran will be no better than the fourth receiver and is not guaranteed to make the final roster.

Finneran was a very good receiver when healthy. The one season where he started all 16 games he caught 56 passes for 838 yards. That's an average of 15 yards per catch. It's a shame injuries have kept him down.

Injuries have kept him down in recent years, but more importantly the Caste System, and also having Vick as his QB for most of his career. Even though Finneran was always productive, and his career YPC was very close to that of Randy Moss, the media and DWFs were always embarrassed that the Falcons were "reduced" to starting him in '02, and replacingFinneran as a starterbecame a priority from then on.

Here's an update on Finneran. He's been the ultimate warrior, but I also worry about him keeping one or more of Atlanta's other White receivers from making the team. The Falcons receivers in preseason games are going to look as White as those of Indy. But you gotta wonder what's gonna happen to Finneran, Ryan Wolfe and Troy Bergeron. I assume Kerry Meier is a lock (but then again this is the NFL); he should be replacing Michael Jenkins as a starter but will likely end up as the team's third, fourth or fifth receiver.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -Brian Finneran allowed himself a satisfied smile.

Another year. Another comeback.

Finneran, 34, is back for his 11th season with the Falcons and on Wednesday proclaimed he felt healthy and ready for the team's preseason schedule, which begins with Friday night's game against Kansas City.

A proclamation of good health is notable for Finneran following major knee surgeries in 2006 and 2007 and another season-ending knee injury last year.

Finneran didn't hesitate when asked if he felt a sense of satisfaction to be playing years after many believed his career was over.

"Absolutely,'' he said. "After I did it the second time in 2007, even for a few weeks I was done in my head. Mentally, I was done.

"But I just kept chugging along and working hard and I've got two years under my belt now and feeling pretty good. I had a couple of banged up knees last year but nothing serious and I'm back now healthy and I just keep going and working hard. It's a tough sport. Guys get banged up every week. You just try not to be that guy.''

The severity of the 2006 and 2007 injuries allowed Finneran to almost casually dismiss the torn left posterior cruciate ligament that ended his 2009 season in December.

Finneran has recovered from far worse knee injuries.

The receiver suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in his 2006 training camp with the Falcons. He also suffered cartilage damage and a displaced knee cap.

The devastating injury could have ended Finneran's career. He needed a year to recover but then also missed the 2007 season when the left ACL again blew out.

That was when even he believed his career was over.

Instead, the 34-year-old receiver played in a combined 26 games the last two years and is back for his 11th season with the Falcons. He made a quick recovery after suffering back spasms at the start of training camp.

"He had a couple of days where he was flat on his back but he was able to get back out here with us,'' coach Mike Smith said Wednesday.

Finneran expects to play in Friday night's first preseason game against Kansas City.

"The knees feel good,'' Finneran said Wednesday. "I had a little back issue early in camp the first practice and then I got over that quick. When you're 34 years old, camp is never fun and never feels that great. But I'm feeling all right now. I'll be ready to go Friday night.''

The Falcons need Finneran, who for a decade has been a valuable possession receiver. Others, especially two-time Pro Bowl pick Roddy White, are targeted for big plays. The Falcons count on the 6-foot-5 Finneran to move the chains.

Of Finneran's 217 career catches with Atlanta, 167 have been for a first down or touchdown.

The Falcons need Finneran because Michael Jenkins, expected to be the No. 2 receiver behind White, suffered a shoulder injury and could miss four to six weeks. Harry Douglas, a contender to move up as a starter, is still recovering from the season-ending knee injury he suffered in last year's training camp and will miss Friday night's game.

Finneran may not play long against the Chiefs. Smith likely will remove his starters and older players in the first half.

"We're going to work Brian like all the old guys in terms of number of snaps in the preseason,'' Smith said. "We're familiar with Brian and what he's capable of doing.''

Eric Weems, Troy Bergeron, rookie Kerry Meier and such undrafted free agents as Brandon Harvey and Andy Strickland are expected to take most of the snaps at receiver.

"We are deep at that position and if anything this is going to give an opportunity for guys to step up and get some more experience,'' said quarterback Matt Ryan. "... It gives me more time with them.''
