I did some research from the 1998 draft to the 2007 NFL draft on black receivers who turned out to be busts. I was surprised that there are actually so many. Take a look.

1998 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 16- Kevin Dyson- can be considered a bust. He played 6 seasons in the NFL and his best season was 54 receptions for 825 yards. Had one other season with 54 receptions for 658 yards. Never went over 500 yards in his other 4 seasons in the league.

Pick 21- Randy Moss- great NFL receiver. Has nine 1000 yard receiving seasons to his credit. Lived up to expectations.

Pick 30- Marcus Nash- could be the biggest receiver bust of all time. Caught 4 passes for 76 yards his rookie season. Was traded from the Broncos to the Dolphins his second season but waived after a week. Also landed on the Ravens that same season but did not catch any passes. He did have a decent career in Arene Football afterwards though.

Round 2

Pick 34- Jacquez Green- can be considered somewhat of a bust. played 5 seasons in the NFL. His best season was 56 catches for 791 yards and second best season was 51 catches for 773 yards. Failed to go over even 500 yards receiving in hid other 3 seasons in the NFL. I gave him the benefit of the doubt only because he was used as a kickoff and punt return guy.

Pick 42- Pat Johnson- huge bust. 84 career receptions for 1,286 yards in 8 seasons says it all.

Pick 50- Germane Crowell- played 5 seasons in the NFL and should be considered a bust as well. Had one very good season with 81 receptions for 1,338 yards. His next best season was 34 receptions for 430 yards.

Pick 52- Tony Simmons- another bust with 58 career receptions for 998 yards in 6 seasons.

Pick 59- Mikheal Ricks- best seasons were 40 catches for 429 yards.and 40 catches for 450 yards. This guy is another bust.

1999 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 6 Torry Holt- No explanation needed. Has 8 1000 yard seasons to his credit. A great receiver in all aspects.

Pick 8-David Boston- Not a bust but didn't exactly live up to expectations. Has 2 1000 yard seasons to his credit in 8 seasons in the league. Also had another season with 880 yards receiving.

Pick 13-Troy Edwards- A sure fire bust. Played 7 seasons in the league and his best seasons were for 714 yards receiving and 533 yards. Never even went over 500 yards in his other 5 seasons in the league.

Round 2

Pick 32-Kevin Johnson- Should be considered somewhat of a bust. His rookie season he caught 66 passes for 986 yards. Went over 1000 yards receiving his third year in the league but never came close to 1000 yards in any of his 5 other seasons in the league.

Pick 52-Peerless Price- Did fairly well in the league. His best season was in 2002 for 1,252 yards. Never had another 1000 yard season but had 800 plus yards receiving twice.

2000 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 4-Peter Warrick-Never lived up to expectations. His best season was 79 receptions for 819 yards. Never even went over 700 yards receiving in his other 5 years in the league.

Pick 8-Plaxico Burress- Has had a good career with 4 1000 yard receiving seasons so far in his career.

Pick 10-Travis Taylor- Should be considered a bust as well. His best season was 61 receptions for 869 yards. He failed to even surpass 700 yards in a season in all his other years in the league.

Pick 21- Sylvester Morris- Has bust written all over him. His rookie season was decent with 48 receptions for 678 yards but never caught an NFL pass after that.

Pick 29-R. Jay Soward- Huge bust. 14 catches for 154 yards his first season and never caught any passes after that. Blames losing his football career on alcoholism.

Round 2

Pick 32-Dennis Northcutt- Has had an okay NFL career. His best season was 55 receptions for 806 yards.

Pick 36-Todd Pinkston- Should be considered a bust as well. His best season was 60 catches for 798 yards. Never even went over 50 catches in a season besides that.

Pick 47-Jerry Porter-a half decent NFL player. Had two seasons of over 900 yards receiving but his next best was for only 705 yards. Was in the NFL a total of 9 seasons.

2001 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 8-David Terrell- Another huge bust. HIs best season was for only 699 yards receiving. Never went over 500 yards in a season besides that.

Pick 15-Rod Gardner- Didn't live up to expectations but not a complete bust. His rookie season he had 741 yards receiving. He went over a 1000 yards in his second NFL season. After that he had two 600 yard seasons.

Pick 16-Santana Moss- Good NFL player. Has three 1000 yard receiving seasons so far in his 9 years in the league.

Pick 25-Freddie Mitchell- No need to explain here. Has only 90 career receptions for 1,263 yards in his entire 4 year career.

Pick 30-Reggie Wayne-Has five 1000 yard receiving seasons. One of the best players in the league.

Round 2

Pick 33-Quincy Morgan- Another bust. Had one good season in the league with 56 receptions for 964 yards. His next best season went for only 516 yards receiving

Pick 36-Chad Ochocinho- good NFL player. Not much to explain here

Pick 41- Robert Ferguson- Bust. Best season was for only 520 yards receiving.

Pick 52-Chris Chambers- has had a decent NFL career. Only one 1000 yard receiving season but has 7,076 career receiving yards on 492 receptions so far.

2002 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 13-Donte Stallworth- A minor bust up to this point.. Has no 1000 yard seasons in his career but came close one year with 945 yards. His best season after that was for 767 yards receiving. Not the type of numbers you expect cfrom a number 13 pick.

PIck 19-Ashley Lelie- Big bust. Has one 1000 yard receiving season in his 8 year career. After that his best season went for 770 yards. So much for his potential with 4.2 speed

Pick 20-Javon Walker- average NFL receiver. Has two 1000 yard receiving seasons in 8 seasons.

Round 2

Pick 33- Jabar Gaffney- Another NFL bust. His best season went for only 632 yards receiving. After that he never even went over 500 yards. Most tight ends in the league have put up better numbers.

Pick 36-Josh Reed- another player who never lived up to the hype. His best season was 597 yards receiving and he had a few other 500 yard plus seasons.

Pick 46- Tim Carter- Terrible receiver. He was drafted by the Giants basically for his speed. 309 yards receiving is his best season.

Pick 47-Andre Davis- Another slightly below average NFL receiver. His best season went for 583 hards receving. Has never caught more than 40 passes in a season.

Pick 48-Reche Caldwell- Had one decent season with 61 receptions for 760 yards. Besides that he never went over 352 yards receiving in a season.

Pick 62-Antwaan randle El- average NFL receiver. His best season was 51 catches for 728 yards.

Pick 63- Antonio Bryant-can be considered a good receiver. Has two 1000 yard seasons in his career but after that has been marginally productive the rest of his career.

Pick 65-Deion Branch- good receiver. No 1000 yard seasons but had 998 receiving yards one seasons and has 4.762 career yards.

2003 NFL Draft Round 1

PIck 2-Charles Rogers- One of the biggest NFL busts of all time. Played in the league for 3 seasons and his best year was 22 receptions for 243 yards.

Pick 3-Andre Johnson- One of the best receivers in the NFL. Has three 1000 yard seasons so far.

Pick 17-Bryant Johnson- below average receiver whose best seasons was for 740 yards receiving. Has yet to catch 50 passes in a season.

Round 2

Pick 44 Taylor Jacobs- Not much can be said about him other than he was a terrible receiver. His best season was 16 receptions for 178 yards.

Pick 45- Bethel Johnson- Another bust. His rookie season was his best with 16 receptions for 209 yards. he was out of the league after 4 years.

Pick 54 Anquan Boldin- Has had a very good career. Has four 1,000 yard receiving seasons already.

Pick 60- Tyrone Calico- Bust. His best season was his rookie year when he caught 18 passes for 297 yards. He was out of the league after 3 years.

2004 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 3- Larry Fitzgerald- Has lived up to expectations and is a good receiver

PIck 7 Roy Williams- Is a bust at this point. Went over 1000 yards receiving his third year in the league but has played very poorly the past several years. Likes to blame his quaterbacks for his lack of skill.

Pick 13-Lee Evans- good receiver with two 1000 yard seasons.

Pick 15- Michael Clayton- Another wasted first round pick. Other than his rookie season when he had 1,193 receving yards and 80 receptions his next best year was 38 catches for 484 yards. So much for all his potential.

Pick 29-Michael Jenkins- has had some success but is still an average receiver. His best year was 50 catches for 777 yards.

Pick 31 Rashaun Woods- 7 receptions his rookie season for 160 yards and nothing after that. Enough said.

Round 2- Pick 50- Another poor receiver. His best season was 32 catches for 793 yards.

Pick 54- Darius Watts- Bust all the way. 31 receptions for 385 yards his rookie season and 2 for 22 the next.

Pick 62 Keary Colbert- Somehow this guy had a 6 year NFL career. His best season was his rookie year with 47 catches for 754 yards. After that his best season was 332 yards receiving. Another overrated player.

2005 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 3-Braylon Edwards- Should be considered a bust but teams still rave about his potential. Had a good sseason with 80 catches for 1,289 yards his third year in the league but has done nothing the past two years.

Pick 7- Troy Williamson- I had no idea there were so many bad receivers picked this early in the draft His beswt season was 37 receptions for 455 yards his second year in the league. Has 8 catches for 64 yards the past 2 years.

PIck 10 Mike Williams- Caught 29 passes his rookie season for 350 yards and only 15 receptions for 189 yards in the past three seasons. Another wasted pick.

PIck 22- Mark Clayton- His best season was his second year in the league with 67 catches for 939 yards. Hasn't even eclipsed 700 yards receiving in any other season.

Pick 27 Roddy White- has produced well in the NFL. Two 1000 yards seasons already in his 5th season i nthe league.

Round 2

Pick 35 Reggie Brown- Had 816 receiving his second year in the league and 780 the following. Hasn't done anything after that. . Is a very average NFL receiver.

Pick 39-Mark Bradley- Was supposed to be a great player. 30 receptions for 380 yards is his best season. Another huge bust.

Pick 55 Roscoe Parrish- hasn't been a great receiver but is a good return guy. Shouldn't be considered a bust.

Pick 58 Terrence Murphy- caught only five passes for 36 yards his rookie season but was injured and had to retire. can't be considered a bust due to spinal stenosis.

Pick 61-Vincent Jackson- Has one thousand yard season but did little his first three years in the league. Is having a decent season this year so can't be considered a bust just yet.

2006 NFL Draft Round 1

Pick 25- Santonio Holmes- Above average receiver. Hasn't had a thousand yard season yet but his receiving totals are 2006: 824 yards, 2007; 942 yards, 2008: 821 yards and he has 764 receiving yards this season so far.

Round 2

Pick 36-Chad Jackson- Bust. For the second receiver taken in the 2006 draft this is about as bad as it gets. Jackson caught only 13 passes his first season in the league for 152 yards. He didn't record a reception his second season and only 1 reception for 19 yards in 2008. He was released by the Broncos in September of this year and isn't on any roster at this point.

Pick 44-Sinorce Moss- Bust- Another speedster who the Giants thought would be a great receiver. In four seasons in the league his best total was 21 receptions for 225 yards in 2007. This year he has 1 reception for 18 yards so far.

Pick 52- Greg Jennings- Decent receiver who had his best season in 2008 with 1,292 receiving yards.

2007 NFL Draft Round 1

PIck 2-Calvin Johnson-Is a very good receiver but not as good as he was hyped up to be coming out of college. His best season was in 2008 with 1,331 yards receiving.

PIck 9-Ted Ginn Jr-Bust- His best season was last year with 56 receptions for 790 yards. Other than that he has showed very little. Only has 23 receptions for 250 yards this season.

PIck 23-Dwayne Bowe-A talented receiver who has produced. Had 1,022 yards receiving in 2008.

PIck 27-Robert Meachem- Bust. Another player who was very hyped coming out of Tennessee but hasn't shown anything as of yet. This is his best season with 16 receptions for 333 yards.

Pick 30-Craig Davis-Bust- Caught 20 passes for 188 yards his rookie season. After that he has actually gone backwards with only 4 receptions for 59 yards last season.

Round 2

Pick 44-Sidney Rice- Average receiver as of now. Caught 31 passes for 396 yards his rookie season. Is having a fairly good 2009 season with 50 receptions for 875 yards as of today.

Pick 45-Dwayne Jarrett- Bust. Another supposed superstar who played for USC. Only caught 6 passes for 73 yards his rookie season. This season looks to be his best with 10 catches for 85 yards so far.

Pick 51-Steve Smith-Above average receiver. Is having a career year in this season with 65 catches for 798 up until today. Also had a decent 2008 season with 57 receptions for 574 yards.

Thanks it's actually every black receiver drafted in the first two rounds of those drafts. I gave praise to some players who are good but as you can see there are a ton of busts. Some of these guys are bigger busts than Ryan Leaf buy you never hear about them.

Thanks Colonel! The thing that bothers me is players like Tim Carter and Ashley Lelie who were drafted based only on great speed. So what If Lelie ran a 4.2 40. He had only one 1,000 yard season never caught more than 54 passes in a season. Most of the white tight ends in the league have been as productive or more productive than that.

Another thing I might add is that I have noticed USA Today is much fairer in their prospect profiles of white skill position players. Sports Illustrated is terrible in describing white receivers.

How about Cleveland Brown's WR Brian Robiskie? 36th pick it the 2009 NFL draft. So far in 2009, 1 rec, 23 yds, 0 TDs. He's on the IA list now. His dad is the Atlanta Falcons WR coach. Another case of a player barely going through the motions and feeling like they can live off their signing bonus check and 1 season of salary forever???

Here are his NFL stats:

Good breakdown WA33. Randy Moss, Holt, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Wayne are the best of that lot....MANY busts amongst them.

Yep Dixie. There is a ton of busts. At least half the black receivers from each draft are busts. Some of these players were drafted in the first round and have like 50 career receptions. Hell I am sure Mike Hass could do better in just one season. Matt Jones has been called a bust even though he played quarterback and had to learn a new position. Last year he had a breakout season and would have went over 1,000 yards receiving if not for his suspension. What is his reward for such a good season? He can't get a team to sign him. It's not his fault Jack Delnegro refused to play him many times.

Thanks for the list 33...and the hard work! Andre Johnson & Fitzgerald/Boldin stand-out on this list as well.....The ratio for star/bust is eye-opening.... Collinsworthneeds see this list for himself...

Roddy White & Sidney Rice would still be strugglinghad Vick & Tavaris Jacksonremained their QB's.....they have been upgraded because of their new QB's Matt Ryan and Brett Favre.

I hope someone signs Matt Jones by next year; if not a playoff team later this season!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!

He had the opportunity right off the get-go to be the Browns' #1 receiver with the departure of Braylon Edwards.

I drafted Robiskie on several dynasty fantasy football teams this year. Why? Because he was hyped non-stop both before and after the NFL Draft as the "most NFL ready" receiver available this year. So, knowing how many high round WRs are busts, and figuring since he was the son of a coach he should have a good head on his shoulders, I went ahead and kept picking Brian Robiskie, figuring he would be a good PPR guy by his second season. He has been worse than terrible so far, even being a healthy scratch again last Sunday. One reception on a team where he should be starting is as bad as it gets. So many black receivers can't run even rudimentary routes after several years in the league. I wonder if a lot of the many busts at WR arejust morons in mental ability, or just don't care very much. Undoubtedly both, and some with a combination of both.

Yep Robiskie is a huge bust up to this point. Like I mentioned before players like Ashley Lelie were expected to be stars based on 4.2 speed. Alot of these affletes would much rather be commiting crimes than commit themselves to learning plays.

Does anyone want to help me do the same draft years I already didbut rounds3-7. If someone helps me we can finish it pretty quick. Also It would be helpful if I had someone assist me because then we could do a percentage of busts for each year. That would make it alot more enjoyable.

Comprehensive list here, thanks for posting it. We can open mindfully debate the merits of this long list of black WR busts.

My general breakdown here.
ELITE:

R. Moss - HOF, one of the best ever on field talents
Ochocinco - HOF, although his cartonnish ego eccentricities may not do him much favor; He's a punk deep inside, but I think is somewhat maturing to set himself up for his life after football and remain relevant, mild nutcase but you never know if he's selling it or what
Andre Johnson - Productive, size and speed, good example of what a #1 WR is supposed to be
Reggie Wayne - HOF, ? is this due to Manning & the Colts system?; will have impressive career stats when it's over. Flourished in the pass happy days of the NFL
Fitzgerald - Legitimate potential HOF, still young and growing into the position, true talent that matches technique with hands
A. Boldin - solid Pro player, demonstrated toughness throughout his career, good numbers, weapon on the field, true asset to team
Torry Holt - HOF, stats round out a great career, of course he played with Warner and the Rams pass oriented system. Still though, he was a great WR throughout his career.

GOOD, Solid Pro Players:

Steve Smith: Skillful, gets open, makes some tough catches, drops a few
Chris Chambers: Just now learning proper technique, should have learned to use his height and strength better, could've been a poor man's M. Irvin, but nowhere near the fanatical hunger of Irvin.
Santana Moss: true speed, have to account for him at all times, deep threat that has made some big plays, maybe 5'8, tough for his size
Lee Evans: good player, not in the right system, I think he's starting to mail it in and play 'more safe'.
Santonio Holmes: heir apparent to the great Hines Ward; won't be anywhere near as great a player, but will continue to develop.
D. Stallworth: may get some slack for listing him under GOOD, probably should kiss Brees's ass everyday thanking the heavens he plays in N.O.
Still think he makes catches, has some speed, DBs have to watch him

AVERAGE, nothing too impressive:

Deion Branch - not bad, reminds me of Ricky Sanders for some reason
R. Parrish - decent, can return kicks, utility in that regard
Calvin Johnson - has some break out potential
Reggie Brown - blah
Jenkins - blah
Roy Williams -prima donna, coward, big mouth, trying to take a page out of Owens's book; only problem is that he's nowhere near as talented.
Should not even rank him in this category; will fade out.
Burress - should be in the 'GOOD' group, but what can you say about such a stupid person? He was a BUST until he went to NY. Will go down as a BUST, but will give him the benefit here because he was starting to develop under Manning.
Greg Jennings - ok, not terrible
Javon Walker - blah, was a product of good Quarterbacking. Overrated

Everyone else you listed is worth a damn. All busts, more in the long line of amazing black affletes and can't miss prospects. They mostly suck.
Couple of notes: Randle-El? you can almost try to make a case because of his utility and speed. But he couldn't hold Matt Jones's jock strap on a good day. A freakin caste product joke.
D. Bowe? LOL!! Alligator Arm Man. Will go down as a overall bust. Probably playing for one last big contract cash out. He will sign one day in the off season some year and the idiot Caste coaches and fans will think he will be 'the missing offensive piece', lol. Happens every year now. He'll have 2 or 3 decent games and be mostly irrelevant or a decoy (media spin to cover up a big buck's lack of production).

Again, the list is littered with overrated affletes.

There are alot more busts than even decent receivers. Also at this point Jamarcus Russell should be considered the biggest NFL bust ever not Ryan Leaf. Also Borussia while I agree with you that Randy Moss is a great receiver he even said himself that he doesn't always play hard. Imagine if a white receiver said that.

BorussiaI would agree wiht most of your list, but Greg Jennings is better than just an average wideout. He is a big play threat who also has some great hands.

Great research WA33! I would agree with Celtic here that Jennings is a big play threat with solid hands and runs above average routes, ie. Mr. Blaze.

Unfortunately for Jordy who is kind of similar to Donald Driver, Driver is having one of his greatest years this year and is Rodgers favourite target. Driver is a route running phenom, with a knack for running to daylight, has reliable hands and just enough speed to be a deep threat too, ie. Mr. Reliable. When Driver declines or moves on, Jordy should become the starting Flanker.

That's an interesting list. A solid list of WR busts could be compiled just from Bears draft picks.

Whenever I get into a casual discussion about football at the office and the subject rolls around to the QB position and Jamarcus Russel, some lame-brain dude always says that he's "got the potential to be greater than Joe Montana, but the racist NFL doesn't want him to succeed."

WTF?

Really, now.

Is this how average white fans think?

* edited to add: this, from the same couple of guys who always railroad the idea of Jacob Hester or Peyton Hillis rushing, and Welker receiving, because "white guys aren't fast enough."

Talk about racists calling other people racist!

WTF?

That is CRAZY!

Russell got drafted number one overall! He has been given his chance (although not a good one, I mean come-on he is playing on the Faders)

Failing to reach a contract agreement with the Raiders, Russell held out through training camp and the first weeks of the 2007 NFL season, until September 12, 2007, when he signed a six-year contract worth up to $68 million, with $31.5 million guaranteed.[6]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JaMarcus_Russell#Rookie_season

Whoa this guy is probably going to get paid over $100 million and yet his supporters are claiming racism?

Jeez I don't think even Jesse Jackson could make a claim like that and keep a straight face...
