I did some research from the 1998 draft to the 2007 NFL draft on black receivers who turned out to be busts. I was surprised that there are actually so many. Take a look.
1998 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 16- Kevin Dyson- can be considered a bust. He played 6 seasons in the NFL and his best season was 54 receptions for 825 yards. Had one other season with 54 receptions for 658 yards. Never went over 500 yards in his other 4 seasons in the league.
Pick 21- Randy Moss- great NFL receiver. Has nine 1000 yard receiving seasons to his credit. Lived up to expectations.
Pick 30- Marcus Nash- could be the biggest receiver bust of all time. Caught 4 passes for 76 yards his rookie season. Was traded from the Broncos to the Dolphins his second season but waived after a week. Also landed on the Ravens that same season but did not catch any passes. He did have a decent career in Arene Football afterwards though.
Round 2
Pick 34- Jacquez Green- can be considered somewhat of a bust. played 5 seasons in the NFL. His best season was 56 catches for 791 yards and second best season was 51 catches for 773 yards. Failed to go over even 500 yards receiving in hid other 3 seasons in the NFL. I gave him the benefit of the doubt only because he was used as a kickoff and punt return guy.
Pick 42- Pat Johnson- huge bust. 84 career receptions for 1,286 yards in 8 seasons says it all.
Pick 50- Germane Crowell- played 5 seasons in the NFL and should be considered a bust as well. Had one very good season with 81 receptions for 1,338 yards. His next best season was 34 receptions for 430 yards.
Pick 52- Tony Simmons- another bust with 58 career receptions for 998 yards in 6 seasons.
Pick 59- Mikheal Ricks- best seasons were 40 catches for 429 yards.and 40 catches for 450 yards. This guy is another bust.
1999 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 6 Torry Holt- No explanation needed. Has 8 1000 yard seasons to his credit. A great receiver in all aspects.
Pick 8-David Boston- Not a bust but didn't exactly live up to expectations. Has 2 1000 yard seasons to his credit in 8 seasons in the league. Also had another season with 880 yards receiving.
Pick 13-Troy Edwards- A sure fire bust. Played 7 seasons in the league and his best seasons were for 714 yards receiving and 533 yards. Never even went over 500 yards in his other 5 seasons in the league.
Round 2
Pick 32-Kevin Johnson- Should be considered somewhat of a bust. His rookie season he caught 66 passes for 986 yards. Went over 1000 yards receiving his third year in the league but never came close to 1000 yards in any of his 5 other seasons in the league.
Pick 52-Peerless Price- Did fairly well in the league. His best season was in 2002 for 1,252 yards. Never had another 1000 yard season but had 800 plus yards receiving twice.
2000 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 4-Peter Warrick-Never lived up to expectations. His best season was 79 receptions for 819 yards. Never even went over 700 yards receiving in his other 5 years in the league.
Pick 8-Plaxico Burress- Has had a good career with 4 1000 yard receiving seasons so far in his career.
Pick 10-Travis Taylor- Should be considered a bust as well. His best season was 61 receptions for 869 yards. He failed to even surpass 700 yards in a season in all his other years in the league.
Pick 21- Sylvester Morris- Has bust written all over him. His rookie season was decent with 48 receptions for 678 yards but never caught an NFL pass after that.
Pick 29-R. Jay Soward- Huge bust. 14 catches for 154 yards his first season and never caught any passes after that. Blames losing his football career on alcoholism.
Round 2
Pick 32-Dennis Northcutt- Has had an okay NFL career. His best season was 55 receptions for 806 yards.
Pick 36-Todd Pinkston- Should be considered a bust as well. His best season was 60 catches for 798 yards. Never even went over 50 catches in a season besides that.
Pick 47-Jerry Porter-a half decent NFL player. Had two seasons of over 900 yards receiving but his next best was for only 705 yards. Was in the NFL a total of 9 seasons.
2001 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 8-David Terrell- Another huge bust. HIs best season was for only 699 yards receiving. Never went over 500 yards in a season besides that.
Pick 15-Rod Gardner- Didn't live up to expectations but not a complete bust. His rookie season he had 741 yards receiving. He went over a 1000 yards in his second NFL season. After that he had two 600 yard seasons.
Pick 16-Santana Moss- Good NFL player. Has three 1000 yard receiving seasons so far in his 9 years in the league.
Pick 25-Freddie Mitchell- No need to explain here. Has only 90 career receptions for 1,263 yards in his entire 4 year career.
Pick 30-Reggie Wayne-Has five 1000 yard receiving seasons. One of the best players in the league.
Round 2
Pick 33-Quincy Morgan- Another bust. Had one good season in the league with 56 receptions for 964 yards. His next best season went for only 516 yards receiving
Pick 36-Chad Ochocinho- good NFL player. Not much to explain here
Pick 41- Robert Ferguson- Bust. Best season was for only 520 yards receiving.
Pick 52-Chris Chambers- has had a decent NFL career. Only one 1000 yard receiving season but has 7,076 career receiving yards on 492 receptions so far.
2002 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 13-Donte Stallworth- A minor bust up to this point.. Has no 1000 yard seasons in his career but came close one year with 945 yards. His best season after that was for 767 yards receiving. Not the type of numbers you expect cfrom a number 13 pick.
PIck 19-Ashley Lelie- Big bust. Has one 1000 yard receiving season in his 8 year career. After that his best season went for 770 yards. So much for his potential with 4.2 speed
Pick 20-Javon Walker- average NFL receiver. Has two 1000 yard receiving seasons in 8 seasons.
Round 2
Pick 33- Jabar Gaffney- Another NFL bust. His best season went for only 632 yards receiving. After that he never even went over 500 yards. Most tight ends in the league have put up better numbers.
Pick 36-Josh Reed- another player who never lived up to the hype. His best season was 597 yards receiving and he had a few other 500 yard plus seasons.
Pick 46- Tim Carter- Terrible receiver. He was drafted by the Giants basically for his speed. 309 yards receiving is his best season.
Pick 47-Andre Davis- Another slightly below average NFL receiver. His best season went for 583 hards receving. Has never caught more than 40 passes in a season.
Pick 48-Reche Caldwell- Had one decent season with 61 receptions for 760 yards. Besides that he never went over 352 yards receiving in a season.
Pick 62-Antwaan randle El- average NFL receiver. His best season was 51 catches for 728 yards.
Pick 63- Antonio Bryant-can be considered a good receiver. Has two 1000 yard seasons in his career but after that has been marginally productive the rest of his career.
Pick 65-Deion Branch- good receiver. No 1000 yard seasons but had 998 receiving yards one seasons and has 4.762 career yards.
2003 NFL Draft Round 1
PIck 2-Charles Rogers- One of the biggest NFL busts of all time. Played in the league for 3 seasons and his best year was 22 receptions for 243 yards.
Pick 3-Andre Johnson- One of the best receivers in the NFL. Has three 1000 yard seasons so far.
Pick 17-Bryant Johnson- below average receiver whose best seasons was for 740 yards receiving. Has yet to catch 50 passes in a season.
Round 2
Pick 44 Taylor Jacobs- Not much can be said about him other than he was a terrible receiver. His best season was 16 receptions for 178 yards.
Pick 45- Bethel Johnson- Another bust. His rookie season was his best with 16 receptions for 209 yards. he was out of the league after 4 years.
Pick 54 Anquan Boldin- Has had a very good career. Has four 1,000 yard receiving seasons already.
Pick 60- Tyrone Calico- Bust. His best season was his rookie year when he caught 18 passes for 297 yards. He was out of the league after 3 years.
2004 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 3- Larry Fitzgerald- Has lived up to expectations and is a good receiver
PIck 7 Roy Williams- Is a bust at this point. Went over 1000 yards receiving his third year in the league but has played very poorly the past several years. Likes to blame his quaterbacks for his lack of skill.
Pick 13-Lee Evans- good receiver with two 1000 yard seasons.
Pick 15- Michael Clayton- Another wasted first round pick. Other than his rookie season when he had 1,193 receving yards and 80 receptions his next best year was 38 catches for 484 yards. So much for all his potential.
Pick 29-Michael Jenkins- has had some success but is still an average receiver. His best year was 50 catches for 777 yards.
Pick 31 Rashaun Woods- 7 receptions his rookie season for 160 yards and nothing after that. Enough said.
Round 2- Pick 50- Another poor receiver. His best season was 32 catches for 793 yards.
Pick 54- Darius Watts- Bust all the way. 31 receptions for 385 yards his rookie season and 2 for 22 the next.
Pick 62 Keary Colbert- Somehow this guy had a 6 year NFL career. His best season was his rookie year with 47 catches for 754 yards. After that his best season was 332 yards receiving. Another overrated player.
2005 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 3-Braylon Edwards- Should be considered a bust but teams still rave about his potential. Had a good sseason with 80 catches for 1,289 yards his third year in the league but has done nothing the past two years.
Pick 7- Troy Williamson- I had no idea there were so many bad receivers picked this early in the draft His beswt season was 37 receptions for 455 yards his second year in the league. Has 8 catches for 64 yards the past 2 years.
PIck 10 Mike Williams- Caught 29 passes his rookie season for 350 yards and only 15 receptions for 189 yards in the past three seasons. Another wasted pick.
PIck 22- Mark Clayton- His best season was his second year in the league with 67 catches for 939 yards. Hasn't even eclipsed 700 yards receiving in any other season.
Pick 27 Roddy White- has produced well in the NFL. Two 1000 yards seasons already in his 5th season i nthe league.
Round 2
Pick 35 Reggie Brown- Had 816 receiving his second year in the league and 780 the following. Hasn't done anything after that. . Is a very average NFL receiver.
Pick 39-Mark Bradley- Was supposed to be a great player. 30 receptions for 380 yards is his best season. Another huge bust.
Pick 55 Roscoe Parrish- hasn't been a great receiver but is a good return guy. Shouldn't be considered a bust.
Pick 58 Terrence Murphy- caught only five passes for 36 yards his rookie season but was injured and had to retire. can't be considered a bust due to spinal stenosis.
Pick 61-Vincent Jackson- Has one thousand yard season but did little his first three years in the league. Is having a decent season this year so can't be considered a bust just yet.
2006 NFL Draft Round 1
Pick 25- Santonio Holmes- Above average receiver. Hasn't had a thousand yard season yet but his receiving totals are 2006: 824 yards, 2007; 942 yards, 2008: 821 yards and he has 764 receiving yards this season so far.
Round 2
Pick 36-Chad Jackson- Bust. For the second receiver taken in the 2006 draft this is about as bad as it gets. Jackson caught only 13 passes his first season in the league for 152 yards. He didn't record a reception his second season and only 1 reception for 19 yards in 2008. He was released by the Broncos in September of this year and isn't on any roster at this point.
Pick 44-Sinorce Moss- Bust- Another speedster who the Giants thought would be a great receiver. In four seasons in the league his best total was 21 receptions for 225 yards in 2007. This year he has 1 reception for 18 yards so far.
Pick 52- Greg Jennings- Decent receiver who had his best season in 2008 with 1,292 receiving yards.
2007 NFL Draft Round 1
PIck 2-Calvin Johnson-Is a very good receiver but not as good as he was hyped up to be coming out of college. His best season was in 2008 with 1,331 yards receiving.
PIck 9-Ted Ginn Jr-Bust- His best season was last year with 56 receptions for 790 yards. Other than that he has showed very little. Only has 23 receptions for 250 yards this season.
PIck 23-Dwayne Bowe-A talented receiver who has produced. Had 1,022 yards receiving in 2008.
PIck 27-Robert Meachem- Bust. Another player who was very hyped coming out of Tennessee but hasn't shown anything as of yet. This is his best season with 16 receptions for 333 yards.
Pick 30-Craig Davis-Bust- Caught 20 passes for 188 yards his rookie season. After that he has actually gone backwards with only 4 receptions for 59 yards last season.
Round 2
Pick 44-Sidney Rice- Average receiver as of now. Caught 31 passes for 396 yards his rookie season. Is having a fairly good 2009 season with 50 receptions for 875 yards as of today.
Pick 45-Dwayne Jarrett- Bust. Another supposed superstar who played for USC. Only caught 6 passes for 73 yards his rookie season. This season looks to be his best with 10 catches for 85 yards so far.
Pick 51-Steve Smith-Above average receiver. Is having a career year in this season with 65 catches for 798 up until today. Also had a decent 2008 season with 57 receptions for 574 yards.
