Best pure hitters would be Boggs and Gwynn. Before that in my lifetime, Rod Carew and Roberto Clemente. Larry Walker had a stellar combination of hitting ability and power but was hurt too much. Joe Mauer and Don Mattingly also come to mind as having several great seasons at the plate but were unable to maintain it.

He probably isn't the best of the past 30 years but John Olerud was a great professional hitter. I still remember as a kid always asking my brother why he always wore that protective hard helmet.

George Brett was an amazing hitter. His .390 season in 1980 was epic. He won a batting title in 3 different decades. Clutch hitter.

Joe Mauer won 3 batting titles. That's pretty good for a catcher. Also Ichiro Suzuki was great.
