Polish ex-football hooligan Artur Szpilka (7-0, 5 KO) scored a first round KO (1:53) against David Williams on the Mariusz Wach - Kevin McBride undercard last night.

The 22-year old Szpilka (whose surname rather comically translates to "Pin" - as in sewing) only got out of jail at the end of April following a one and a half year stretch for robbery and assault.

Szpilka became a boxer by accident. He was a member of a Wisla Krakow hooligan firm and used to take part in various ustawki, or organised brawls, between rival gangs of supporters. During an ustawka he was shaping up for a one on one fight with some meathead from arch-rivals' Cracovia's firm when a boxing trainer spotted him and proposed that the two fight in a ring.

Here is a video of Szpilka's entrance to the ring in his June 25 bout against Ramiz Hadziaganovic (first round KO), his first since his release from prison. I'm only adding it in as an example of the bloody wiggerism that's rife among Polish youth  (N.B. the first 15 seconds feature a beer ad):

he is as dumb as it gets. so is the 'Hip Hop" culture among Polish youth, i can't comprehend it.

I don't know anything about the guy, whether he's smart or stoopid, but actually i dug his ring entrance. I like his police escorts. Those two are the cutest cops I've ever seen.

What's with the jailhouse orange jumpsuit? I think he was going for a "straight outa jail" theme. Maybe his sense of humor is over my head.

But hey, if he keeps knocking people out I'll get on board.

Duh, I didn't even catch that. So he was playing the convict with police escorts? Ha ha!

Not fond of his attitude, i like his unorthodox style of fighting though.
At 6ft3, he moves quite well too and i assume he has (at least) decent power

from www.fightnews.com

22-year-old heavyweight Artur Szpilka (8-0, 6 KOs) had no problem to win his third consecutive fight by technical knockout when seasoned challenger Owen Beck (29-9, 20 KOs) retired on the stool after the third round.

Szpilka, a southpaw, dominated from the opening round, connecting with almost all his punches, especially with his signature left hook. In the third round, after series of punches, Beck was on the verge of being knocked down, and his corner was ready to throw the towel and stop the uneven fight.

It happened during the break between the rounds, when Beck was not ready for another three minutes of the Polish fighter’s power.

“I was very excited on the beginning, I wanted to knock him out as soon as possible, but then I started to box. His experience was a no factor, he looked like he was little bit afraid. When my trainer said to fight faster, I was able to put it in an extra gear. I’m fighting for the fans, I want to show people that boxing could be a very exciting sport.

My next fight will be on November 5 in the States,” said Szpilka in the special interview after the fight for Polish television. Polsat TV broadcasted young Polish heavyweight live.

So his next fight with be on the Wach-McCall card.

Szpilka has good size at 6'3 and 240 but he's very fast and athletic with it,he moves like a cruiserweight. He's getting alot of praise in boxing by guys like Lennox Lewis. If he remains hungry he could go all the way.

Harris is listed as a cruiserweight. He'll outweigh him by 30 or 40 pounds.

Artur Szpilka will fight March 24th in Atlantic City, same card as Wach-Fields and David Price.
