Beterbiev is better than a slugger but he's not a boxer either. At the pro championship level you can't only compete with power, you have to have the boxing to go with it. That's why it's called boxing and not fighting. I see many flaws in him right now which Kovalev would jump on. Some of his flaws are corrigible, others are not.

They officially fought just once, Kovalev says he won but Beterbiev received a gift decision.
The other fight was just sparring, Kovalev says he won.
Beterbiev is back tomorrow night against Gabriel Campillo.

I'd hate to see Kovalev and Beterbiev fight because I'm a big fan of both so I wouldn't like to see one of them lose.
If they fought right now, I'd favour Kovalev by stoppage. He's beaten better opposition (Hopkins, Pascal, Cleverly all very good opponents), and in addition to being a hard puncher he's shown he's smart and technically savvy.
Good punchers are a dime a dozen.
But a good puncher who can box, think, adapt, and defend is championship level.
Beterbiev has looked mighty impressive VS Cloud and Saunders but we haven't seen him go rounds yet or seen if he can do more than just hit hard.
I think Beterbiev ' s team would be making a big mistake if they chose to fight Sergey now. Beterbiev is not ready and needs 5-10 more pro fights to develop.

Kovalev is a superior boxer to Beterbiev. If he knocked Kovalev out then that would be his only chance.
Good post. But, in my opinion, I can't see Beterbiev ever developing and learning an all-around style it takes to be a champion. Beterbiev doesn't have the range, the jab, the elusive footwork, and defense that becomes a versatile world class boxer. Beater is more or less one dimensional at this point whereas we saw much of the above in Kovalev right from his debut on television. If most of those skills are not already present, it is almost impossible to put them there as a pro when a fighter fights tough competition and those Quebec trainers are useless unlike Kovalev's trainer.

I do not want them to fight each other. I'd rather they just cleaned out the sub-humans in the division, like Stevenson. Maybe one of them could move up to cruiserweight. Light heavy is now a very stupid division as it only encompasses 7 pounds, 168 - 175. Meanwhile cruiserweight encompasses 25 pounds...and heavyweight is everyone from 201 up to Andre the Giant or whatever. Boxing's idiotic weight classes. Both of them are about six feet tall so one of them might want to add some weight, no?

Seen all of this before. Its all stationary short range stuff. Not that impressive really. Kovalev knocks guys out with long range jabs to the body on the fly. Much more impressive in all my experience.

Just finished watching the Stevenson vs Bika fight. Stevenson struggled with a C+/B- fighter. He got the UD but faded in the last 1/4 of the fight. Kovalev will steam roll him. I doubt Stevenson will seek a fight with the Krusher.

He is a monster, don't get me wrong! Kovalev has much, much better skills though.
Saw the full fight. Campillo didn't move and he didn't punch; he was a punching bag. No contest here. Anything he did throw landed. Beterbiev keeps fighting these type of fights he'll face shock and awe against Kovalev who does move and fires long range missiles.
After watching this, now I wonder if Stevenson will fight Kovalev. If he does he's going to get demolished.

I can guarantee a win for Kovalev! Toughest MUF i have seen in years. Truth is the truth. This guy doesn't box to get robbed.

After watching the fight earlier today, I became even more convinced that Kovalev is on another level in comparison to the rest of the division. Beterbiev can punch, but Campillo came off as if he were scared stiff while trying to act the opposite - if that makes sense.

I know he is, Jack! Watch how complete he is. He has great footwork, incredible power, and maybe the best overall boxing skills in the division. It takes only two of those three skills to make a champion, but to be the best around it takes all three.

Yes, he is the total package. If he were a bit 'darker' he would receive much more respect. I've watched a lot of his fights several times each (get them via bitorrent so I can save 'em, ssshhhhh lol) and it's amazing how Kovalev is able to learn from each fight and adapt. I have no doubt Stevenson is scared to death of him.
