Artsiom Parakhouski is a 6-11 junior center for the Radford Highlanders who i had never heard of before watching him play in the Big South Tournament yesterday.

in his first season at Radford, he won the Big South Player of the Year Award this season after averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds per game.

why is this anything special? it is just his 5th year playing organized basketball!

that's right. the former soccer player and swimmer played only 2 years of high school basketball in Belarus before signing with junior college Southern Idaho, where he helped them go 30-2, win a SWAC title, and a #2 Ju-Co national ranking as a sophomore.

he is long, strong, and has incredibly quick feet. this guy has major upside.

another Radford player that looks good is 6-8 junior forward Joey Lynch-Flohr. he was 1st Team All-Big South after averaging 13.6 points and 5.7 rebounds while being a terrific, and versatile, defender.

I like the name of that team, the Radford "Highlanders".

Wow a soccer player at 6'11! And I'm assuming he was good if he kept at that for so long as to not pursue basketball right away. That is quite impressive; the guy must be very athletic for his size. Good to see he switched to basketball full time b/c at his height that was a good choice for the higher levels!

The giant Steve Nash, minus the passing.

Well Radford beat VMI yesterday and have qualified for the 2nd time in school history for the tournament. Parakhouski looked very impressive on the ESPN televised game yesterday.

Parakhouski, the Big South's Player of the Year in the regular season, posted his 16th double-double of the year with 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting and 18 rebounds. He was also named Big South Tournament Most Valuable Player.

His effort on the glass tied a Big South tournament record and broke the league's single-season mark.

in his first year at Radford (and only his 5th year playing organized basketball!), Parakhouski carried the Highlanders on his back to a 21-11 record (so far) and the school's first NCAA Tourney berth in over a decade. and only its second ever.

to really put his performance in perspective, Radford went 10-20 last year, without the big man on campus.

Joey Lynch-Flohr also was named to the All-Tournament Team and knocked down 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and pulled in 11 rebounds in the Championship game.

Great performances by both Parakhouski, and Flohr. That ex-soccer player is fast becoming a force in basketball. In about 3 more years of course.
