Russian heavy Alexander Povetkin impressed in stopping American David Bostice in the second. Povetkin opened up late in the first but was caught himself but showed a good chin to go with everything else. In the second he got Bostice against the ropes and worked him over with sharp hooks from both hands forcing a stoppage.

And no, he doesn't get knocked down! I think that statement was in reference to a decent uppercut by Bostice, no big deal.
Povetkin has very short, quick, powerful punches, especially that beautiful left hook. I loved how accurate and efficient he was during the final flurry; he wasn't just throwing wild bombs to finish the fight, he was aiming those shots. And he has a good defensive style: hands up, good head movement. Although he probably traded with Bostice a little more than I would like. I don't know what's going to happen when the 6-2 Povetkin fights one of the giants, but the guy is very skilled, no question about it. And you've got to admire how he's fighting solid competition early on in his career.

It was announced this morning that Alexander Povetkin will headline a huge boxing show in Berlin, Germany on Saturday May 5/07. I hope he faces a highly-ranked veteran, so then he'll move up in the ratings after winning.
Both tough veteran Luan Krasniqi and highly-ranked Calvin Brock took 12 rounds to win decisions over David Bostice, while Povetkin stopped Bostice in the second round. Alexander had one of the most successful amateur careers in the history of boxing, including winning the Gold Medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Alexander Povetkin is working on a deal to face 25-0 22ko JD Chapman for May 5 2007.
Chapman is talking sh*t about Povetkin.Ive seen a few fights of chapman and from what Ive seen,Povetkin will make short work of chapman.If this fight comes off which is looking more and more likely expect a knockout from Povetkin inside6 rounds.Edited by: onewarrior5

Yes, I've heard JD Chapman's management have been talking with Povetkin's people to arrange this fight. It doesn't seem like a wise career move for the Chapman, who's no match for Povetkin.
Chapman might improve. He's three years younger than Alexander, and needs the experience of fighting some of the better journeymen before facing a world-class heavyweight like Povetkin. JD is 25-0, but has fought few really tough opponents.

The lastest word on Povetkin's May 5 fight is he will face a tough heavyweight from Detroit, Leo Nolan (26-1, 10 KO's, age 34) instead of JD Chapman. It will be a good test of Povetkin's punching power, because Nolan has never been knocked down.
This is good news, since JD Chapman is one of the best American heavyweight prospects, and doesn't need a loss to Povetkin on his record so early in his career.

The former world amateur champion, who also won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics, will take on Patrice L´Heureux (20-3, 12 KOs) in Bamberg on May 26 before coming face-to-face with Monte Barrett (31-5, 17 KOs) just one month later..
The former opponent of Nikolai Valuev has been lined up for a fight in Moscow in June which will spell Povetkin´s biggest test to date. Undefeated in 11 fights (9 KOs), the 27-year-old has set the bar high. "After winning everything as an amateur, I am eager to be successful as a professional fighter, too," he stated. "I am keen to be a world champion one day."
Before battling it out with Barrett, Povetkin has to put aside Canada´s Patrice L´Heureux on the undercard of King Arthur Abraham´s ring return. The IBF middleweight champion will be in action for the first time since breaking his jaw in a points victory over Edison Miranda last September. Povetkin is eager to take care of business against L´Heureux. "Heureux means happy but there will be no reason for him to be happy after our fight," he vowed. "Much on the contrary." Povetkin last destroyed David Bostice inside two rounds.
The up-and-coming heavyweight has been training together with his coach Valery Belov and brother Vladimir, who celebrated a successful pro debut two months ago, in his hometown of Tschechow (near Moscow) - the same city where world famous Russian author Alexander Pushkin lived and worked. It is not all that seldom that the 27-year-old pays the local Pushkin museum a visit. Ironically, Pushkin died after a duel. "He would have been better leaving the fighting to me," Povetkin said. "He was such a great author - and I will be a great boxer. But I will not suffer the same fate as him. I will never lose a duel."
Not that Povetkin was not working hard in practice before, but April 14 has given him another boost. "I was so disappointed to see Nikolai Valuev losing his WBA belt to Ruslan Chagaev. I will avenge his defeat and restore Russian pride." Funnily enough, there´s an Uzbek restaurant just around the corner from his gym. "You cannot start your preparation for Chagaev early enough," he smiled.

It's good that Povetkin's fighting frequently (both May and June). Since he's winning his fights early, he needs to fight often to have enough professional experience.
Monte Barrett is a tough journeyman who is well known to boxing fans, since he's been fighting mostly top level opposition for the last six or seven years. This fight will be a great way to measure how good Povetkin is.

Alexander Povetkin easily defeated Patrice L'Heureux with a second round TKO...I'm eagerly awaiting his next fight on June 30 against tough journeyman Monte Barrett.

Barrett has been a contender and has fought some of the best heavyweights over the last 7 years, and has been in eliminators and title fights. However because he is not ranked by any of the sanctioning organizations since his loss to Valuev, his status is now one of the best journeymen rather than a contender. The last I looked he was ranked 48 by boxrec.com, but I would rate him a little higher than that.
He's the perfect opponent for Povetkin right now - we can think of him as a gatekeeper to test an up and comer.

JD, I was being sarcastic. I know it doesn't come across on the Internet very well, but the winking emoticon was the best I had to express the intended sarcasm.
I realize Barrett is a journeyman, that was the point of the joke. IMO, he never should have been considered a contender for so many title fights and 'eliminators' in the first place.
The problem with these types of fights is the media picks and chooses how to spin the results based on who wins. If Povetkin wins, did he beat a journeyman or a former title contender? My bet is Barrett will suddenly not be as good as he once was (to steal a line from a country song). But if Povetkin loses, then Barrett will have beaten a potential contender and probably find himself in line for another 'eliminator.'
