2026 Winter Olympics

Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam set an Olympic record earlier today and won gold. Based on what I saw, I’d give her a 10….and her skating performance was pretty good too.

She’s engaged to American boxer / entertainer Jake Paul so she’s definitely trouble.

What the hell is going on with the Norwegian biathlon team?

The gold medal winner, Johan-Olav Botn, dedicated his win to his late teammate and training partner, Sivert Guttorm Bakken. Botn discovered Bakken's dead body in Bakken's Italian hotel room when he went to pick him up for practice about six weeks ago. There has been no announced cause of death, though Bakken was wearing a high-altitude training mask with the pressure jacked up to 4.3 miles of elevation. Wikipedia cites a German article stating the the cause of death is expected sometime in March (after the Olympics), which seems oddly specific.

I am wondering how Botn was able to get into Bakken's hotel room - did he have a key? There is apparently no murder investigation ongoing. Botn is said to be in an "intimate relationship" with a female (also a Norwegian skier). Anyway, Botn dedicated his win to his deceased friend. The altitude mask seems to be the lever, but there's a possibility of an overdose, accidental or not.

However, the headlines belonged to bronze medalist Sturla Holm Laegreid. Laegreid used his interview time to weep into the camera and apologize for cheating on his girlfriend, who he met six months ago, with a (presumed) girl he met three months ago. The girlfriend dumped him, and this has made him very sad. He's 28 years old, by the way, and won gold at the World Championships five years ago. This is surely not his first rodeo.

What do you think of when you see elite athletes with unusual hormone profiles?

The U.S. trounced Latvia in its first hockey game and Canada rolled over Czechia or whatever it's called these days as that country seems to change names every few years.

Since The Country That Shall Not Be Named is again banned from the Olympics, a U.S.-Canada battle for the gold would be the optimum outcome, similar to the 4 Nations mini-tournament that took place last year instead of the All Star game and was very heated and successful.

If that doesn't happen, seeing small population Sweden or Finland win wouldn't be the worst result.

It looks like Lindsey Von Afrika has finally stepped into it. Assuming no exaggeration of the truth, she appears to have suffered a compound tibia fracture and has undergone 3 surgeries with more on the way. Those fractures are no joke (just ask Alex Smith) and come with the risk of amputation and if you survive that most likely walking with a limp and a lifetime of pain going forward. What a price to pay for grrrrrl power!

Of course now it is daily updates from the hospital bed, she cannot without the attention.

Every 4 years I vow to not watch the Olympics more so the winter games but something always sucks me in. This year it is was the speed skating but my overall enthusiasm seems to be less and less. Everything seems to be contrived like the Vonn(Afrika) comeback attempt, but the downhill still sucks me in too. The hockey gold medal match could be the rematch of the 4 nations hockey final which was similar to having a 4 course meal with an aged wine.

I will say this the quality of athleticism is the highest it's ever been due to technology and the fitness of the athletes. Comparing Peggy Fleming to the females now is night and day.

This highlight reel always got me enthused for the Olympics....
