Since 2006, Oklahoma has started 3, 5, 6, 7, 5, 6, 4, 3,3, 3, 5, 4, 3, 3, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 5 whites. In 2026, they will start 6.
Head coach Brent Venables, former white-friendly DC at Clemson, enters his fifth season with the Sooners. He hasn’t found championship glory at Oklahoma and weathered a couple of sub-par seasons, but he made the expanded playoff field last year and signed a big new contract with the school last month.
John Mateer is the team star and has started a national conversation over his “jacked” physique that is surely a racial double standard. Mateer played through injury last season and will look to solidify his draft status as a potential franchise QB. A Heisman run isn’t out of the question if the team fares well.
He’ll get to throw to Texas defector Parker Livingstone, who grabbed six touchdowns last year as a redshirt freshman. There are also three new transfer tight ends in Hansen, Beers, and Van Dorselaer - I think Beers will be the receiving threat of the group, for now.
Standout DE Taylor Wein had 7 sacks and 15 TFL last year. Mike LB Owen Heinecke added 3 sacks and 12 TFL. There are three playable linebackers behind him, including Michigan transfer Cole Sullivan. Sullivan was *possibly* poached by the Sooners way back when they hosted the Wolverines last September. Maybe Michigan tries to poach him back in a few weeks?
Six starters isn’t a lot, but with just one offensive lineman in that tally and defensive depth, this is a much better team to root for than last year’s squad.
