The 2025 San Francisco 49ers are trending towards a very positive direction. This year's team features 10 White starters and 21 White players on the roster in total. The 2024 49ers featured 7 White starters and 16 White players on the roster in total. 3 additional starters and 5 additional players as a whole is definitely a big improvement because now almost half of the team's starters are White and White players comprise more than a third of the roster.

Most of the offensive starters from last year are returning, including the often-doubted but highly productive QB Brock Purdy, superstar RB Christian McCaffrey, criminally underrated FB Kyle Juszczyk, and probable future hall-of-fame TE George Kittle. These forces combined to power the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2023 but failed to secure a victory. In 2024, Purdy took a step back statistically and McCaffrey was sidelined due to injury. Those setbacks combined with the defense regressing from 3rd to 29th in points allowed led to an abysmal 6-11 record. This year Kittle was placed on IR and won't be eligible to return until week 6. Getting every part of the team to enter the zone and peak simultaneously is an astronomical task, but it also comes with astronomical rewards. Thankfully this year's 49ers have three new starters to help them return to the stars.

The new additions to the starting offensive unit are WR Ricky Pearsall and rookie LG Connor Colby. Pearsall dealt with injuries and survived being shot in the chest last year but not even these calamities could stop this athletic marvel from becoming a starter. Pearsall boasts a historically great 9.91 RAS, which includes elite composite explosion and agility grades. This score ranked 31st out of 3,402 receivers from 1987 to 2024. Like Pearsall, Colby is another White athlete with a historically great RAS. His score of 9.66 ranks 55th out of 1,583 offensive guards from 1987 to 2025. With these two starting, the 49ers offense is now up to 8 White starters. This number recalls the glory days of those 2010s Patriots offenses that were such a joy to watch.

On defense there are just 2 White starters, but that is still an increase from last year's 1 man show. DE Nick Bosa returns and looks to recapture the magic of his stellar 2022 season, which saw him record 18.5 sacks and win Defensive Player of the Year. He even garnered a few MVP votes. He took a noticeable step back statistically in 2023 and in 2024 he struggled with hip injuries which caused him to miss 3 games. Joining Bosa on defense is the newly-acquired LB Luke Gifford. He went undrafted out of Nebraska in 2019 despite boasting a historically elite 9.39 RAS and since then has bounced around a few practice squads and special teams units. Injuries forced the Tennessee Titans to promote him to a starting role near the end of the 2024 season. Gifford started 4 games and in those games he produced very well, recording 35 total tackles (21 solo), 1 tackle for a loss, and 2 passes defended. He even intercepted an errant pass from Joe Burrow in Week 15. The Titans foolishly let him try his hand at free agency and the 49ers quickly picked him up on a 1-year deal earlier this year. It should go without saying, but look out for this guy.

It's safe to say that the 2025 San Francisco 49ers are a team to root for. The question is, will they be able to find their footing after taking that massive step back in 2024? If the offensive stars stay healthy and productive and if the defense can rebound, there's no telling what the future holds for this bright team.

Great write-up, once again the San Fran offense brings back fond memories of the dynastic Patriots!

I'd like to see Gifford get more snaps however. He had none last week at SLB and just 44% the week before. I know some places list him as a starter but Fred Warner and Dee Winters have been gobbling most of the linebacker snaps thus far.

Thanks for the info on Gifford. It appears that he's a starter in their base 4-3 defense but in packages with less than 3 LBs he gets taken out in favor of Warner and Winters, who are the starting MLB and WLB respectively. I checked the 49ers' snap counts and judging by the numbers, those are the only two LBs in on most plays thus far. In two games the 49ers have hardly used their base defense. That's the funny thing about base defenses these days, most teams hardly even use them enough to warrant being called "base defenses".

Yes, and some of those depth charts list 12 defensive starters, so looks like Gifford is the odd man out on many plays. But it's a long season so we'll see how it plays out for him. Like so many unheralded White linebackers he almost always produces when he gets an opportunity. Also, it was unexpected when Winters won a starting job in training camp. He was a sixth round draft choice in '23 so his hold on the job isn't all that secure. Warner on the other hand is one of the best in the league.

That stinks. Now only Gifford to cheer for on Defense, who is sparingly used.

San Fran might need to can their strength and conditioning team. The sheer amount of injuries this team gets is infuriating.

That was the one thing I thought he would bring! Offense has been great but what the?!

any word on Pearsall’s injury?

Absolutely this has been going on for years and it’s unacceptable. Hof talents are being wasted year after year by this organization

He's been healthy since recovering from his hamstring pull early in training camp.
my mistake. I was thinking of Alec Pierce’s bad hit. sorry for my confusion.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will continue to practice this week and could play Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. Purdy’s status will remain up in the air as the team evaluates him in practice starting Wednesday.

“We’ll see on Wednesday how much he is able to do,” Shanahan said.

Backup quarterback Mac Jones, meanwhile, is day-to-day with a knee injury that bugged him but did not keep him out of Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Purdy has missed two games with a turf toe injury, but Jones is 2-0 as a starter. On Sunday, Jones aggravated the knee sprain he suffered in training camp, playing with and without a bulky knee brace during a 16-15 comeback win over the Cardinals.

Purdy practiced in a limited capacity last week, and both Purdy and Shanahan were pleased with his progress. The team left the door open for Purdy to serve as the backup against the Cardinals, but he was inactive.

Jones leaned on Christian McCaffrey and Ricky Pearsall against Arizona, targeting them on 26 of his 41 attempts. Jones finished 27 of 41 for 284 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Some semi-positive news for Purdy and Mac. Knowing that they still have a chance to play is good, but what is going on over in the city of rainbows? I just checked their depth chart on ESPN and the entire team is littered with injuries, including the entire QB room. Purdy and Mac are listed as questionable while 3rd-stringer Kurtis Rourke is listed as out. If they got really unlucky and no one could start at QB this Sunday, San Francisco would need to either go shopping for one or give 2024 UFL MVP (LOL) Adrian Martinez a chance. Either way, this offseason they really need to take a step back and do some Sherlock Holmes-style sleuthing on where this injury bug is coming from. It's the 49ers' very own AIDS epidemic. They better find a treatment sooner rather than later because you can't win anything when your best players are rotting on the bench. Should be obvious, right? Not to the San Francisco 49ers apparently.

Add wide receiver Ricky Pearsall to the list of injured 49ers.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that Pearsall will miss practice because of a knee injury. Shanahan said that he hopes Pearsall will be able to get back on the field later in the week.
Pearsall's knee is giving him some trouble. Missed practice today and is currently listed as questionable. Doesn't seem to be too bad if Shanahan still hopes that he can play on Sunday, but I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

Got some 49ers news for ya:
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s toe injury remained an issue in his return to the lineup for the team’s Week 4 loss to the Jaguars and a short week before Thursday night’s game against the Rams doesn’t provide much chance for it to heal.

Purdy was estimated as a non-participant in practice on Monday and General Manager John Lynch said on KNBR Tuesday that the team “will take every precaution to make sure that Brock’s alright.” Lynch added that it remains to be seen if that will be enough for him to play this week.

“I think he’s listed as questionable, and I think it’s a true reflection of where he’s at right now,” Lynch said, via 49ersWebzone.com.

Mac Jones will start if Purdy can’t play. Jones aggravated a PCL injury in Week 3, but the team said he would have fully participated in practice on Monday.

Lynch also addressed wide receiver Ricky Pearsall’s status. Pearsall hurt his knee against Jacksonville and Lynch said he expects that he’ll be “listed as questionable” along with Purdy.
Purdy and Pearsall are both currently listed as questionable for Thursday's game. In the event that Purdy is out, Mac Jones will step up and take the reins. I'm sure we'll have something more concrete soon.

The 49ers organization needs a complete overhaul of their S&C. From 2011-21 they are LAST in adjusted games lost (a metric that analyzes how many games a team loses due to injured players missing the game). In 2022 they were 23rd in the league, 2023 was a fluke as they were actually first and unsurprisingly had their best year, 2024 they were again LAST. And now injuries are piling up in 2025. This is completely unacceptable for a team with sb talent!

I don’t know how San Fransisco is going to do it… Pearsall and Jennings out. Kittle and Aiuke out. The offensive line like a feather in the wind.

Mac Jones is a good quarterback and CMC is a generational talent who, had he been able to stay hungry, would have been looked at in the same vein as Marshall Faulk.

All eleven Rams defenders will be keying on McCaffrey. I hope he can break a long one this week. Moreso I hope he stays healthy because he will need to continue to carry this team on his strong shoulders for the foreseeable future.
