Since 2005, Ohio has started 17, 15, 12, 11, 10, 10,12 14, 12, 9, 9 ,11 , 14, 14, 11, 9, 9, and 8 white starters. They look to start 9 in 2023.
Quarterback Kurtis Rourke returns as the starter for his fourth consecutive season. He has previously won some ‘Player of the Week’ awards and appeared on multiple shortlists, so Rourke will be considered one of the top QB’s in the MAC.
Wide receiver Sam Wiglusz was voted to the MAC First Team last year after racking up 73 catches, 877 yards, and 11 touchdowns. He’s a former Ohio State walk-on who found greener pastures nearby. Keegan Wilburn is the primary kick returner and averaged 24 yds per return last year. Caleb Gossett will look to make the box score more regularly. Ohio keeps a half-dozen white receivers on the roster that were high-performing high schoolers without major offers. Hopefully, a few of these stick with the team going forward.
Redshirt sophomore RB Nolan McCormick played in all 13 games last year and logged two starts (due to injuries), although he starts the year third on the depth chart. Fellow redshirt sophomore Bryce Kittrell was a local high school stud but is lower in the pecking order. Tyler Toledo has disappeared without a trace. I’m afraid that last year’s game where the Bobcats played (exclusively) three white running backs was just an anomaly.
The defense is pretty empty this year except for projected safeties Ben Johnson and Austin Brawley, who are slated to move into the starting lineup. Brawley is a true sophomore and has a lot of good football in front of him.
The Bobcats have a ton of white depth, especially on the defensive front seven. Ideally, the depth chart looks better after the start of the season.
